    Song vs. Song

off to the races vs. ultraviolence
  10. lana's songwriting was always personal, she was always one of the greatest songwriters of this generation, the critics don't understand her past work because they can't comprehend anything that isn't digestible and mainstream, especially made by a woman who may have her own thoughts, experiences, and perspectives on certain matters, nobody should make art for critics, the charts, radio, social media, etc. it shouldn't have to be for any of that, she should make art for herself first and foremost, anybody who has a problem with it doesn't have to listen, she will/has found her audience
  11. oh, no, she was definitely trying to do this, it's a shame that we're in a culture that seems to only focus on the perspective of a woman who is portrayed to be strong, independent, etc. and for many years a lot of people felt that lana was anti-feminist for expressing her experiences which didn't align with that image, she talked about her feelings and experiences artistically and evocatively, i'm glad that nowadays, she feels more comfortable with talking about dark subjects, troublesome emotions, and the feelings and experiences who made her who she is as a person, i just wish people would realize that a woman feeling a certain way about relationships or what it means for them to be a woman doesn't mean that they're acting in a way that is somehow anti-feminist or is detrimental

  13. grandfather is nice sonically but the meaning of the song doesn't really make much sense... is it about missing a dead loved one and your relationship with said dead loved one and god? or is it a vague statement about proving the haters wrong? it will be interesting to see how people talk about ocean boulevard after a while once the album has settled in or after a couple of other albums/releases, i think it's a major improvement from blue banisters but it's definitely not my favorite, it has some really strong points, candy necklace is already in my all-time top ten, but some of the songs were honest-to-god bad to me (fishtails...peppers...taco truck... when will people be over them? i am a hater!)
  14. also... i have to say it... her song lyrics are infinitely more poetic compared to her actual poetry
  15. at the end of the day it's subjective, but i feel like her songwriting was so much better during the earlier albums, a lot of her songwriting is more straightforward and personal, which i can respect, but the descriptiveness, depth, beauty, and worldbuilding of the earlier albums just can't be beat, her songwriting on songs such as off to the races, bel air, ultraviolence, honeymoon, and countless other songs are just so much more interesting and impactful lyrically
  16. honestly, i agree, i like blue banisters, i suppose, but it feels like her weakest, most non-sensible project regarding how it was structured, blue banisters' best songs are the ones which were actually recorded for the album, like text book, blue banisters, and wildflower wildfire, but at the same time, we have beautiful and violets for roses which i don't think i've listened to since listening to the album for the first time lana's decision to release some of her old, leaked songs would've been a lot more of a tolerable idea for me if she didn't just release them as they were, nearly a decade old, and supposedly youtube rips, i personally think it was very lazy of her to do this, she didn't even go out of her way to try to find the original files, i feel like they should've been completely reworked, you can still hear the drums of thunder's demo in the album version, nectar of the gods sticks out so obviously on the same album with songs like blue banisters and arcadia because her musical, vocal, and songwriting style has changed so much over the past decade, i just don't understand what the intention was with a lot of the decisions of this album, some of the songs are deeply personal and are the stand-out tracks of the album, such as blue banisters and wildflower wildfire, and some are just... complete filler which make no sense with the narrative that lana was trying to go for with this album, as far as i can tell, like dealer, thunder, the trio, and beautiful i can respect and appreciate the fact that lana wanted this album to be an opportunity to bare her soul and to dive into the more personal aspects of her songwriting and experiences, but it just falls flat with this album, in my opinion, and a lot of it is because she just chose the wrong songs to put on this album, i feel like DYKTTATUOB accomplishes this goal a LOT better, ocean boulevard really does feel like the album blue banisters is meant to be
