After the Afterparty works on the level of a Yachty track, with its nursery-rhyme melodies and hedonistic themes...as a Charli XCX track, she made better songs in 2009.
-
she's spent the past 3 years cementing herself as one of pop's biggest songwriters, making an entire documentary about how exhausting it is to be a female in the music industry and constantly questioned about whether or not she writes her songs, won the SESAC Songwriter of the Year award last year and somehow her contract/label believes that the best marketing strategy for her is to release a tepid tropical-sounding song that she didn't even write? would really love to know the logic there.

If by overrated you mean "rated over 90% by the majority of critics" I agree

All of the reviews of this track are just instantly shoving it to the side calling it a Creep ripoff and completely ignoring that Get Free begins where Love ends and is literally such a rewarding closer to the album, it's upsetting. Like, the chord progression of Creep is so far from unique. I, V, VI, vi is not a breakthrough chord progression, it's almost as basic as it gets.

anyone else find themselves not going back to listen to literally any of collxtion ii at this point?

I'm still a pretty big fan of the ambient album

considering XCX3 is (supposedly) still with bloodpop, stargate and SOPHIE, and this track is with Jack Ü (supposedly), it probably is??? update: song's not with Jack Ü, it's Benny Blanco and Stargate and was written for Gwen Stefani apparently

it doesn't take away from the quality of the song or anything, but it's like a near Sia-level sonic signature. personally I love being able to hear a songwriter's personality come through, tove was the perfect choice to co-write this song with.
-
anyone else think the tove lo credit on homemade dynamite shines through a bit too much? i mean, you can basically sing Habits over it...

this website was just not meant to have an allie x thread

yeah, this sound is terrible. edit: the sound is not terrible. the sound of charli's autotuned microphone is, though

Can someone please help me unhear Rick Astley when I listen to Vintage?? it's really getting in the way of the experience...also the bridge totally incorporates the prechorus of Can't Feel My Face by the Weeknd, right?
-
i'm halfway through the album now...why don't i feel anything when I listen to any of these songs?
-
why did we never think of just posting this, could've saved like 400 pages!

when did this allie x thread become such an allie x thread, wow. sad the aurora instrumental isn't the version she sang over, it's so beautiful. i wish allie would do her acoustic sessions with piano instead of guitar.

that part of the video is so confusing... that part of bounce is like, 30 seconds into the song, not 3 seconds, and the file she's actually listening to in the video says "White Roses ex5.mp3", but the google drive thing stays stuck at 3 seconds even though it's not paused like who edited this

I don't understand her anymore...she mixes her vocals to sound like they're recorded in the 1940s and drenches them in reverb and then has a pretty much completely dry 808 drum machine and such a deep synth bass that it barely translates on laptop/phone speakers, the main listening platforms. And the random triplets in the hi-hats actually really mess up the groove...this is like a new High by the Beach, yikes.- 426 replies

haha, i don't think so! there was a brief period of time where people pretended to have super ultra demos to get things like "machines" or "feel my pain", two very sought-after unreleased songs at the time. go ahead and post them, i'd love to hear what people were trying to pass off as real

Okay, I really like this album. But like, does anyone else agree that Allie kind of kills a lot of the momentum on her songs by constantly just copying and pasting parts of them with like, no added ornamentation or anything? Songs like Downtown, Lifted, True Love is Violent and Sanctuary really could use more than just the same chorus arrangement and vocal take. Sanctuary isn't even on this album, I'm just still mad about how much better the video version of Sanctuary is than the album version for literally only that one reason. As for bridges, the fucking Need You and TLIV bridges are some of the highlights of the entire album! Why then, with the ability to write such good bridges, do Paper Love, Lifted, Simon Says, and Downtown not even have them?? In Lifted and Simon Says' cases, it's just the intro again! Even the high belts (that I have no idea why she's so afraid to showcase, her low range is not where she shines) are so slathered in so many effects that they barely fit into the songs themselves. Old Habits Die Hard's last "HAAAAAAARRDDDD" should be the focus of the last chorus, but it sounds like it's 10 miles away. There's like a single extra "uh huh" in Vintage that really doesn't add that much to the song. And if no one else is gonna say it, the main riff of Vintage is literally just a Rick Roll and the chorus melody of Lifted is pretty much just right out of Shrek.
