Honeymoon - Pre-Release and Discussion Thread

To be fair, Cry Baby is somehow really a good concept album. And even though I'm not here for the Halsey hate, calling Badlands a concept album is stupid. I think HM might be influenced by the idea of "watching" people and invading their private space (HBTB video, the HM lyrics about escaping, Music To Watch Boys To, the promo pics where Lana always seems to either observe or even get ready to be observed herself), as well as less "autobiographical" stuff (meaning, not just love songs), like TLY which I personally think is about "losing" someone to a mental illness, with the motive being influenced by Terry Bowie. But even if that may be a strong topic, it doesn't neccecarily mean it will be a concept album. Cry Baby is a concept album. Electra Heart is a concept album. The Defamation Of Strickland Banks is a concept album. But the oeruse of the term makes ACTUAL concept albums seem less special. -

I think he's more referincing to people forcefully referring to every damn album which has some kind of recurring theme as a concept album. -

These are more overal topics and lyrical themes, I think actually talking about concept albums would go too far. Especially BtD ... "Lolita" is a very vague concept, it's mostly a collection of songs about love, bad boys and sadness. I can somehow see Paradise being a collection of things that she likes, compared with a feeling of loneliness but i also think "concept" is unrealistic. The only album where i could see having a concept and somehow also having a "story" is UV -

Fun fact: The Higsons had an album which included both a track "Music To Watch Girls By" (a cover of the original song) aswell as "Music To Watch Boys by". -
Even though I'm not a big fan of Martinez as an artist, I really like Cry Baby. It has a great production and I love this "Alice in Wonderland"esque "childish motives meet adult/teenager problems" atmosphere.

My ranking so far Control Hurricane Castle Strange Love New Americana Ghost I Walk The Line These songs are my favourite ones and the most outstanding ones in my opinion. Gasoline Coming Down Haunting Drive Hold Me Down These songs are pretty good but all of them have their highs and lows. Colors Young God Roman Holiday These are the songs I like the least. All 3 of them are nice but I think they are very forgetable.

Religion or The Blackest Day. Religion, if it's not some dark song ala G&M or a song that just uses religion in a way NA uses patriotism. If it's actually a spiritual song, I'm out. The Blackest Day sounds like if it's not some kind of semi-alternative-electro-pop-muddy-trap song it's gonna be a corny mess. -

I think the verses of both Hm and TLY sound off. It's not really bad but I think she sings way too low and kind of drags the notes -

This is whining on a very high level BUT I don't like her low registers as much as on her older material (VG, BD, BV). Lines like "We both know, the history of violence surrounding you" or "You are what you are, I won't change you" sound off. Her "mid" register sounds great though, like "... will never grow old" ,"or whatever you want to do" or "I'll let you be bad" are all such good vocals. -
I hate how people relate every sad love song she does to Barrie. I doubt any track apart from Black Beauty, Flipside and is This Happiness was fully about him. Good chances he also was an ifnluence for Cruel World and Shades Of Cool (even though he doesn't fit the bad boy archetype at all) but I guess that's it.

I want her to grow her hair again. the miley Cyrus haristyle looks stupid.

That would be so cringeworthy -
These are the pink flamingo lyrics, I remember someone posted them from a better pic of the booklet/a post card "Pink flamingos always fascinate me. I know what only the girls know"

It's a song about AHS: FS because she liked/hated their cover of G&M She said it's a sexy song so the freak might be one of her bad boys. Or it contains the corny "freak in the bedroom" line -
I guess "random music stores" would have already announced exclusive titles. I guess we just won't have any Deluxe titles this time.

Hm. I think you are kind of right. I also don't think it's "just" about the end of a relationship, like a general break-up. The "I lost myself when i lost you" sounds like it's really a heavy loss and the bridge, which seems like she tries to "reach" someone who's lost, like the ground control is trying to reach Major Tom. Another hearbreaking part is "I don't matter to anyone", like she would have lost the only person who really mattered to herself and who helped her getting over problems with other people/feeling lonely. BUT I don't think it's a seperation because the other person died. The "you are who you are" and "I won't change you" parts wouldn't make sense in this case. If we assume Terrence is really supposed to be influenced by Terry Bowie, could this mean the person in the song lost someone to a mental illness? This would explain why you have to deal with the fact that you maybe can't change the person back to who he/she was before and why you would try to "reach" them like you try to reach someone who's far away. Still getting trashed when she hears his tunes would mean she remembers him like he was before, doing things he did before the illness. This would make the title"Terrence Loves You" seem even more heartbreaking, since it would be kind of something someone says to a relative/partner of a mentally ill person. "He's not the way he was, but he still loves you!" BTW I love how the song, even though it has some really sad lyrics, doesn't actually sound like a dramatic sad song and has these jazzy saxophone-lines and guitar-strings.

No matter what it was supposed to look like, it looked bad af. -
Castle is a great intro and I like the bitter undertone. Hold Me Down isn't really a song I ever liked and I still think it's one of her weaker ones. New Americana is a cool song, a little bit overproduced at some parts but still a standout. Drive is .. ok. It has some nice moments like her vocals and the guitar but it's a bit ... messy aswell. Hurricane keeps it's place as an awesome song (I think her Room 93 EP was a very strong one) Roman Holiday is a sweet song, maybe single material but I don't like it too much as a stand-alone-song. Ghost is still my favourite Halsey song. I don't actually know how to feel about Colors ... Still have to figure out if I like it or if I just think of it as "ok". Part 2 is a very nice interlude, it's actually a shame she didn't do a full song with this vibe. I don't like her vocal style in Strange Love, at least not during the verses. The chorus of the song is pretty nice though. Coming Down is a pretty good song, I like the calm yet somehow "simmering" instrumental and her vocals. Haunting is .. well, a "solid" Halsey song. It's nice and maybe it will grow on me more with time. Gasoline is a fun song, not too spectacular but definitly good and i don't get why it's not on the standard version. Control is my favourite new song. I feel about Young God in a similar way like I feel about Haunting. It's a "typical" Halsey song, nice but not too overwhelming. I Walk The Line is a great album outro and I actually wish it would be longer. I love her "exhausted" vocals and the drums during the chorus.

I guess the next promo single will come out one week before the album. I doubt she'll release another one after TLY. I could imagine it being a song from the first part of the album or at least a part on the album which comes before Burnt Norton. -
Where do they "come from"? Bonus tracks?

The album is quite nice. Not too original and not too diversive but nice to listen to. Ghost, Hurricane and New Americana still are highlights of the album. I also really like Control, it's having such a nice sound and the lyrics are ok aswell. The rest is composed of "nice" songs and some that are ok to listen to, but actualyl quite forgetable as stand-alone-songs. Her voice is really nice, though.
