Well... there's hardly anything you'd consider 'radio friendly' on this record, but Old Money has the potential to be a huge success for her. Properly promoted she could blow up like Adele with this ballad.
It's possible she could prove to the haters that she IS the missing link in popular music!

Their separation just made this song from Barrie so much sadder to me.

Excuse me while I have a moment to grieve.

BTD is glossy where in UV is gritty. I think Lana did a better job with occupying the narrative of the Other Woman in UV (mistress, rock star girlfriend, gold-digger, jilted lover). The songs stand out more to me in BTD but the album of UV is a unified story. The lyrics on UV are more up-front and visceral, BTD's lyricism require a bit more imagination to enjoy.

BTD is genre-bending Trip-hop beats & samples, orchestral strings, vintage vocals, an intentional contralto. And in a lot of ways, UV is not new, The instrumentation is a throwback to classic rock n roll. Even has a cover. So the album feels familar even though it's a newer album.

I'm really suprised Lana went [back] to this sound in UV. Like the Get Drunk sessions but with a bigger budget. BTD was a ambitious debut, and Ultraviolence seems like it should be the debut LP of a singer with BTD as the follow-up. Like the way releases progress as indie-engenue's become more popular points to Marina & Ellie.

The visuals in BTD are stronger so far. Shades of Cool is an amazing video, but it doesn't stand a candle to BTD(song) or BJ (either versions). West Coast is cute, I love the shots of Lana falling asleep as Karl Lagerfeld drives the car.

Ultraviolence is the better album overall. But Born to Die has ultimate standouts (like Video Games, Born to Die, Blue Jeans, Summertime Sadness) that are timeless songs. UV miss this kind of classics. I also feel that UV will have lesser replay value.

I saw many of her concert videos and she does the same things over and over again, ritualistically: the same gestures when she sings Born To Die, she goes behind Blake when he is soloing, she comes down to the first row during National Anthem, smoking on stage etc. The only things that make her shows work are the powerful sing-along songs mostly from BTD, the fact that the fans adore her and in part because she is beautiful. Her interpretation on stage is mediocre at best and sometimes is outright weak with little emotional investment. She's "real" for the fans and "inauthentic" for her detractors for the same thing: her unpolished performances. But this is getting off topic

When her look compensates for everything else on stage, she's absolutely gorgeous, you can watch her even without the music:

I don't have the pretense that I know LDR. What I know is from her interviews and I have formed an idea about her personality which could be wrong but this is mainly the consequence of her inability to have a coherent public discourse. I don't think that she's doing that on purpose to fuel her "mystique" rather she seems insecure about everything: her music, looks, public perception, her life and as a consequence she gets "confused" when opens her mouth.

About her relationship with fans I think that is more complex than "she's great with fans", because i have the feeling that those first row extravaganzas at every concert of hers are more about her (insecurities) than about the fans. Fans are also those in the back who don't see her for 15 min in a concert because she's taking selfies in the front row. She has garnered some touring experience and It's just ridiculous that the communication between her and the fans during the concert it's limited to some awkwardly uttered "you're amazing". She has powerful songs that could be introduced nicely connecting with the audience and the whole experience would be better. I get the fact that she's not a trained or natural performer and I like the fact that her shows lacks the usual gimmicks and theatrics but I have the feeling that she's investing to little in this meetings while her fans adore her.

    One of the comments:

"what a vacuous theistic moron, with a weak voice to boot. I'm sure she'll make a ton of money for the men who chart her course, I greatly look forward to ignoring here entire output, and encouraging others to as well."

Ignoring her output by listening to all her radio interviews and leaving nasty comments on them to make it clear that you just wasted your time listening to that interview because you hate Lana as a singer and a person and are looking forward to ignoring her output.

God sometimes I just wish these assholes would find a singer they DO enjoy listening to. In fact I put money on him being a Lorde fan

You guys are getting all worked up about an off the cuff statement to a likely hypothetical question just after she put an album out? This is Lana we're talking about here. Have we still not learned anything? Geez, you guys are so excitable.

BTW, "record" doesn't necessarily mean "album". You know the Grammy award for Record of the Year? It's for the best recording of a song.

Ha, keep dreaming. Oh, and no @ symbol? Coward.

  21. Swan Song liked a post in a topic by Hellish in Is This Happiness or Flipside - your favorite bonus track?
Flipside is kind of lackluster.....Is This Happiness represents a lot in my opinion.

Are they both perfect lyrically? No.

Does one evoke more emotion than the other? Yes.
