There are so many questions surrounding Lana Del Rey. As one of the most enigmatic pop stars of this generation, the 27-year-old talent stands as a sphinx in a sea of overexposed bold face names. Taking a break from recording “
“—her just-released track off The Great Gatsby soundtrack—the Queen of Sadcore escaped from the confines of the L.A. studio she was toiling in to spend a day shooting with FASHION magazine in Malibu’s Zuma Beach area. The breath-taking beachfront spot Del Rey handpicked for the cover seemed to transport the crew into her dreamy world of ‘50s pinups and MGM icons, evoking the essence of Lana Del Rey videos off her debut, Born To Die, her latest E.P. Paradise and her new duet, “Summer Wine,” which features her boyfriend Barrie-James O’Neill.Features Editor, Elio Iannacci had a chance to witness the magic unfold and chat with Del Rey after her epic 10-page photo shoot was done.
Here are a few of the highlights from the upcoming Summer 2013 cover story:
On the inspiration behind her cover look:
“Every shoot I do, I have a theme. I’ve been watching old Spanish films and my new record has a Spanish guitar on it so that actress-signorita vibe so its been on my mind. We always listen to The Eagles “Hotel California” while we get ready.
BRA AND BRIEFS, BOTH PRICE ON REQUEST, AND EARRINGS, $1,200, BY DOLCE & GABBANA
    On women she admires:
“I believe in Amy Winehouse. I know she’s not with us anymore but I believe she was who she was and in that way she got it right. I would say an actress like Lauren Bacall also got it right. She never let anyone [persuade] her to be something she wasn’t. She was strong. She always looked like she knew what she was doing.”
On being called anti-feminist: “I get it. It looks like I’ve chosen a path of submission. But I’m a modern day woman in so many senses. I pay my way and work hard for things but it is my choice that at the end of the day I have a dominant male in my life that is hands-on. Someone who wants what he wants the way I do. I get so tired of trying to have it only my way, it’s nice to have someone else who also has their life and opinions. I have to be so assertive in life that its nice to feel escape through a really passionate romance.”
On her romance with Scottish rocker Barrie-James O’Neill: “He’s on tour and opens for me. We sing some Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood duets together. I’ve been seeing him for a year and a half and he’s even more of a meticulous, devout artist than I am.  He can’t keep his hands off the piano, ever. Whenever I’m not writing he always asks, ‘why aren’t you writing?’ We kick each others asses. We give each other input every night.”
On her musical philosophy: “Einstein said ‘your imagination is more important than intelligence,’ and I have a very, very big imagination. I love to live in my internal world and will never stop seeking influences and visions for my art.

Since getting 'Young and Beautiful' several other Gatsby songs have been revealed. I'd thought I'd compile them, compare and rate and so on.

Beyonce and Andre 3000 - Back To Black

    by Rating: 3/10
Review: Honestly terrible. I agree with Amy's dad. They just haven't touched on the original. Andre 3000's section at the beginning is terrible. At time, his voice sound good with the beat, however many of the times it sounds terrible. Beyonce then come in and well.... I expected more. I original expected that she'd be brillant. I was wrong. Worst cover I've heard this year, and now we know the reason this was not initally picked as the official single.

Florence and the Machine - Over The Love

    by Rating: 10/10
Review: As much as I love 'Young and Beautiful', I cannot deny that this is the stand-out track of the album so far for me. Some may say that it sounds like all over their other material. However, this is one of the best songs I've seen them deliver. A perfect song.

Fergie, Q-Tip and GoonRock - A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)

    by Rating: 6/10
Review: Catches the 1920's era with the instrumental at the beginning, and then goes into some pop record that likes like a RedOne production which disappointed me. I wish they kept to the era, but it's nice to hear Fergie again since the BEP departure. Q-Tip and GoonRock make the record sound like a Will.I.Am record. I guess she's found her replacements for the Black Eyed Peas.

    Sia - Kill and Run

    by Rating: 5/10
Review: First listen, and my thoughts are this is supposed to be a Lana Del Rey record. And then I found about who co-written the record. And not to my surprise it was Chris Braide, a regular writer and producer with Lana. A soulful song, yet in the back of my mind I just want Lana's voice on the track. And secondly after learning of Sia, all I can imagine her singing is 'Titanium'. Sorry Sia.

    The xx - Together

    by Rating: 7/10
Review: I personally love anything the xx do. Their albums are my favourite and I have them on vinyl, and this I need on vinyl. I can imagine this being played throughout the film. I'm just in love.

    Nero - Into The Past

    by Rating: 9/10
Review: I'm a big follower of Nero. I've seen them live twice, and their songs are mainly commercial and mainstream big athems. This however is a complete oppiste. The beginning is dreamy and then it goes into a mellow drum and bass scene. I'm glad they asked Nero to contribute to make the soundtrack diverse. Do I think it goes with Gatsby however? No.

I have to admit. I love Young and Beautiful. From the snippets given I didn't except much. The bridge is my favourite part of the song. HOWEVER. Brace yourselves. And you all know you agree with me. I just feel that ever since Paradise, her songs have been lyrically weak, but production-wise have advanced. I just feel every time Lana releases a new song it's going to involve America, parties, riding, paradise, dying etc. I want new lyrics. I could cope with Paradise using the repetition of lines and variations from BTD (as BTD did the same with the unreleased material and the AKA album). But I feel Lana needs to complete her European tour (and American if she does it) and take a bloody rest and seriously think about her music and her lyrics. If we get an album at the end of the year or start of 2014 I won't be anticipating much, as I know lyrically it will not ever be as strong as BTD (and earlier) Rant over. Goodbye

I strongly suspect the song originally may not have been written for the film and was adapted later for use in the film. I'm not an expert on these things, but I don't think that would matter for Oscar eligibility since it's initial release has been as part of the soundtrack.
Also, I'm making a prediction that the "DH Orchestral Version" will play during the film's closing credits.
