At least she doesn't have to make room on her mantle for a Grammy; shit's already pretty crowded

Fact are facts. To me, NFR has, and will forever, sound and feel like a watered down version of a Lana Del Rey album. We live in a time were critics have softened up to her and aren't as inclined to destroy her albums in reviews. It very much feels like they praised the crap out of the first record she puts out in a post-Lana Del Rey hate era. While pushing the narrative that "Lana Del Rey finally released a great album, look she's become one of the greats!". 2019 was bullshit. It was certainly a good album, but it was indeed pretty bland as opposed to her previous albums, it was also the least controversial of her albums as far as lyrics go for sure.

However, NFR was better than most of the albums nominated for AOTY that's for sure. I've said it before, I'll say it again, Award Shows are nothing more than a political show where big industry players like to make people think they have a chance of winning some "important" achievement, and make those that win feel oh so important, when it's nothing more than a worthless piece of metal.

The Grammys showering Billie with awards to reinforce her industry plant status...

I just want to say first that I really agree with the sentiment here; yes, Lana is deserving of every bit of recognition she can get, even though I don't think that NFR is her strongest effort thus far (nor her most deserving, that's for sure). It was certainly an overall stronger album than most of the other nominees in that category, which very much included Billie. However you totally missed my point.

What I was actually saying is that's it pretty silly to value award shows this much. Because at the end of the day award shows are just a way for the industry to pat themselves on the back, and that's it. To put so much value on some silly trophy and to pretend that it's the upmost form of validation for any artist is pretty sad in my opinion. At the end of the day it's just a shady committee/circlejerk type of thing.

I understand that recognition from your so called peers probably feels amazing, but how many amazing and legendary artists have never even received one of these? Does it make them any less interesting or talented? I don't think so.

Lana knows this, she doesn't need Grammys to power through and make amazing music. If you're all about the art, award shows don't matter to you. If the Grammys were that fair, Lana would've won one for Best New Artist in 2012, Album of the year, Pop vocal album, Best Alternative album in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018. But here we are.

Personally, when I look at this:

Words that immediately come to mind are: ridiculous, over the top, exaggerated, etc.

I'm not disregarding their contribution to music, or questioning their win. But when I look at this I very much picture some savvy record execs that after a very prolific year from these artists, they are like: here's your little trophy, thanks for your "contribution".

    Anyway.

Edit: Noticed how these awards aren't called "Best Song of the Year" or "Best Album of the Year" but simply "Album of the Year" and "Song of the Year? I rest my case.

I also agree with almost all the points made. Generally, people shy away from chaos and confusion, and NFR had PLENTY. I also think it was a very weak record for the most part (not all).

I will admit, I would like to be in a fandom where an artist wins for once. However, I don't live my life liking things based on what awards they get, so I'm not too fussed! It would have been a deserving win, but on reflection here are some factors I think of why NFR didn't:
Little to no campaigning from Lana to actually win the award. No interviews, long stretches on social media with no content related to the album, no TV performances or high profile talk shows to build and maintain hype. Is this her management or her? I'm inclined to think her. Shambolic roll-out of the album, including confusion over the singles. Venice Bitch and MAC weren't even confirmed inclusions until the track list came out, and at the time were called something dumb like 'fan singles'? The slow roll out of some of her strongest and well-received pieces (Venice Bitch, MAC and even Hope) meant they almost entirely dropped out of public view, and lead to an ineligibility of those tracks leads to none of them being able to nominated for Song of the Year. Norman Fucking Rockwell simply didn't have the same appeal. Also releasing the  Norman Fucking Rockwell was never, ever, EVER going to win song of the year. It didn't even have a film clip until very late last year. It wasn't sent to radio stations, and wasn't radio friendly.  She never sung her singles at her concerts. She balks at performing new material, and has fucked up with shaky performances live more than once. She didn't even perform at the awards. This is basically cementing the perception that she is still living in 'Born to Die' territory. Again, this is self-sabotage.  The title of the album, and the singles ('Venice Bitch', 'Norman FUCKING!! Rockwell', 'Fuck It I Love You') put prudes off, affected YouTube algorithms and search results on Google, and would have diluted aggregated results for the album due to the different titles (Norman Fucking Rockwell OR NFR! or Norman F**king Rockwell OR Norman Rockwell OR whatever else). The album didn't have the same appeal as things that regularly popped up like Bad Guy. The sacrifice of this title didn't really resonate with a lot of people and an artistic choice that probably put people off. The awards are rigged (discussed as recently as this week from the President of the Grammys), and most likely a committee was wanting to pick something popular to stay 'in touch' with current trends. It's still not 'cool' to like Lana del Rey.  Obviously she would be proud of the music, but apparently she can't even produce nice artwork for her singles, or format the titles of her tracks correctly. That really projects a feeling like she couldn't care less. If she doesn't care, why bother giving it to her?  Maybe controversially, it's simply not as good as her previous albums (?) and didn't have as many hits. While I wish she'd won, I think if she DID win, it would undeservingly absolve a lot of these issues that we were unhappy with during the roll-out of the album. If she is truly driven, and keen on winning the Grammy, then for the next album hopefully she will trust her managers a touch more, and we will see a refreshed approach, with a more considered approach to promotion and sensible choices. But maybe she actually doesn't care! (we know she does but eh).

Birthday Suit (and Love Triangle) being registered with a ton of Rainbow album songs, and having the same writers as some Rainbow songs is enough proof that both of those songs are Rainbow outtakes to me. Like I said, she made a lot of poppier songs for Rainbow but scrapped most of them, but they're still album outtakes from the Rainbow era/recording sessions.

She looked really downtrodden and I don't really understand why because she, of all people, must know that award shows are garbage truck juice.

I'm also really sad that she would've made some crackheaded acceptance speech filled with "fuck"s and now we'll never get to hear it.

Let's face it production wise NFR! was pretty bland. Her next album needs to have a lot of fire like UV. Her and Dan created next level magic. He pushed her to her ultimate creative high. Jack Antonoff played it very safe with NFR. It was pretty basic compared to UV. NFR felt like a sonic regression because we know how much more Lana can achieve sonically. If anything UV deserved a Grammy Award. Hope she goes all out and creates a rock heavy album next with fire production by Dan Auerbach.

Do you really think it was a coincidence that miss Lana was literally sitting two feet away from our Lord and Savior Daniel Auerbach? I don't believe in coincidence, do you?
