Aliaa liked a post in a topic by ILostMyself in God Knows I Tried
For me, the "God knows I tried" means that she tried to be good. Like, "good" in the way how it is defined by society. But not so sure on that. I think "happy" makes sense, too!
But on another note... Is Lana religious? Like REALLY religious? Because that song obviously sounds like this. I know she's had lyrics like "Jesus is my bestest friend" or "All that's real to me is Marilyn and Jesus" or "Mary prays the Rosary", but to me that always seemed like this opulent naive Lolita imagery.
She also said that she studied Philosphy because it "bridged the gap between God and science... I was interested in God and how technology could bring us closer to finding out where we came from and why." However, to me that sounds not like a believer, more like someone who would want to study all these different existential ideas to try to understand, and that obviously involves the theories of religion, astrophyics and philosphy. So, she never seemed like a truly believing person to me, more like someone who is fascinated by the glamour and abyss that is Christianity and the Catholic church. But, I guess I was just wrong?

[Verse 1]
Give me all, got my blue nailpolish on
It's my favorite color and my favorite tone of song
I don't really wanna break up, we got it going on
That's what you gathered from our talk but you were wrong
[bridge]
It's not easy for me to talk about
I have heavy heartstrings
I'm not simple, it's trigonometry
It's hard to express, I can't explain
[Chorus]
Ever since my baby went away,
It's been the blackest day, it's been the blackest day
All I hear is Billie Holiday
It's all that I play
It's all that I play
[Hook]
Because I'm going deeper and deeper
Harder and harder
Getting darker and darker
Looking for love
In all the wrong places
Oh my God
In all the wrong places
Oh my God
[Verse 2]
Carry me home, got my new car and my gun
Wind in my hair, holding your hand, listen to a song
Carry me on, I don't wanna talk about the things to come
Just put your hands up in the air, the radio on
[bridge]
Cause there is nothing for us to talk about
like the future and those things
Cause there is nothing for me to think about
Now that he's gone I can feel nothing
[Chorus]
Ever since my baby went away
It's been the blackest day, it's been the blackest day
All I hear is Billie Holiday
It's all that I play
It's all that I play
[Hook]
Because I'm going deeper and deeper
Harder and harder
Getting darker and darker
Looking for love
In all the wrong places
Oh my God
In all the wrong places
Oh my God
[Verse 3]
You should've known better
than to have to let her
get you under her spell of the weather
I got you where I want you
You're deader than ever
and falling for forever
I'm playing head games with you
Got you where I want you
I got you, I got you,
I got you where I want you now
[Chorus]
Ever since my baby went away
It's been the blackest day, it's been the blackest day
All I hear is Billie Holiday
It's all that I play
It's all that I play
[Outro]
It's not one of those phases I'm going through
Or just a song, it's not one of them
I'm on my own
On my own
On my own again
I'm on my own again
I'm on my own again
I'm on my own again
I'm on my own again

I've seen you walk along the riverside
I've seen you walk along at ease
And in the air I feel a silence,
it whispers perfect on the breeze
And there's a voice that keeps me company
It takes me closer to the stream
And in the break of any suffering
It makes me feel like there's no pain
Finally, finally, finally I'm getting closer
To the dream
To my dream I believe
[Lana:]
I'm up a creek and you're my paddle
Where there is you there is my soul
Another dream where I'm the witness
I am the witness to your goal
[barrie & Lana:]
Finally, finally, finally I'm getting closer
To the dream
To my dream I believe
Finally, finally, finally I'm getting closer
To the dream
To my dream I believe
To my dream I believe

I have somehow come to terms with the "Soft Ice Cream" thing. Like it is SO American. I also love how naive and playful it sounds... And I think it is very random and unique how she connects this Italian lover boy / gangster with this food imagery, like she sings of Cacciatore and ice cream in the Chorus and then she's being theatrical again with "dying by the hand of a foreign man" and then again "Salvatore can wait, now it's time to eat soft ice cream" Hahah I love it! To me, this is the cleverest song on the album, lyric- and music-wise.

I wish Lana would say Gelato instead of ice cream just to continue the Italian food references...

I love this song so much... It reminds me of the bad gangsta boy of BTD. But with a better sound
And I think @@James19709's lyrics are 100% right!

cheaptrailertrashglm liked a post in a topic by ILostMyself in Art Deco
Well I think I'm stating the obvious here, but I remember a discussion on the HM Pre-Release thread about the denotation of "Art Deco". At first, I thought calling a song Art Deco and refering to someone as it is quite tacky, but I've really come to like it and I think it's pretty clever now.
For me, "Art Deco" is a Carmen 2.0, so the person refered to in the song is Carmen. There was this discussion if calling someone Art Deco is negative or postive, but I definitely think it has a strong negative connotation. Art Deco was an art style in the 20s purely for decorative reasons, as the name already suggests, and it was soley used on furniture, wallpapers etc, so it's not an independet art style, like e.g. Art Nouveau, but it is dependent on its placement and the particular time period of the 20s. It was not only supposed to reflect the zeitgeist of the time, but it was the "Golden Twenties". Everyone wanted to dive into the wealth and jazz and party of the time, and Art Deco was to reflect this.
Soooo... in my opinion, calling her Art Deco in the song means that she is exactly this: a decorative object without its own "artistic" stand-alone value. She just exists to be beautiful, ever on the hunt for wealth and beauty (accompanying ruthlessness and decandence). As Lana says in her song, the addressee "wants in" but she "just can't win." Like Art Deco. Very clever in my eyes.

How about this:
Sometimes I wake up in the morning to red, blue and yellow skies -
it's so crazy I could drink it like Tequila Sunrise
Put on that Hotel California, dance around like I'm insane,
I feel free when I see no one and nobody knows my name
God knows I lived
God knows I died
God knows I begged
begged, borrowed and cried
God knows I loved
God knows I lied
God knows I lost
God gave me life
And God knows I tried
God knows I tried (x3)
Sometimes I wake up in the morning to red, blue and yellow lights
On Monday they destroyed me but by Friday I'm revived
Put on that Hotel California, wear my blinders in the rain
I've got nothing much to live for ever since I found my fame
God knows I lived
God knows I died
God knows I loved
God knows I lied
God knows I begged
begged, borrowed and cried
God knows I lost
God gave me life
And God knows I tried
God knows I tried (x4)
So let there be light
Let there be light
Light up my life
Light up my life
So let there be light
Let there be light
Light up my life
Light up my life
God knows I tried (x8)

i have another suggestion for improvement... How about we actually introduce her favorite color into the lyrics as she mentions it so obsessively? (Also, just noticed, there's a lot of summers and summer rains...)
All the lights in Miami begin to gleam,
ruby, blue and green, neon too
Everything looks better from above, my king,
like aquamarine, ocean's blue
All the lights are sparkling for you, it seems,
on the downtown scenes, shady blue
Beatboxing and rapping in the summer rain
like a boss he sang jazz and blues

I hear "shady blue" instead of "baby/city blue".
Also I'm pretty sure she says "soft ice creams", plural, in the chorus.

reputation liked a post in a topic by ILostMyself in Do you think Lana still believes in God?
I've read on multiple occasions and also seen it in interviews that Lana believes in God, and that, in my view, has not changed at all. Now, I'm atheist, however I think that being Catholic, attending church, saying prayers etc. does not at all contradict being interested in metaphysics or looking at the laws of physics to understand the creation of the universe. God simply is not an explanation for everything.
Also, she has a goshdarnit song called "God Knows I Tried" on the album, and I don't know about you guys but to me the song sounds very much like she believes in a God. And that very strongly.
