LANALYSIS: Relating Songs To Known/Assumed Relationships

Is it a two hour plane ride? I've recently thought she could be talking two hours by air even though their is a black motorcycle. Maybe they only used the motorcycle to get to the airport. Lol.

I was given the approval to post info I found on fb on here, but no pics or names. This doesn't mean try to hunt down people and ask them questions about Lana. They aren't okay with that.

Random sleuthing side notes:

J took a trip to India in Dec. 2008. Maha Maha is from 2009 so that could have been the inspiration, especially since it's really her only song with that sort of sound.

On the trip, J was in London for a few days. There's a few pics of him with Rob (and others) at a house in London, but no Lana.

Someone commented about a wedding in one of the India pics but I'm not going to say it's about him and Lana, but that would be interesting.

J and Lana were for sure living together in April 2009, but there is a pic of J in the same kitchen in Feb. 2009 so it could have been sooner.

He plays guitar and bass and was in a band from 2001-2007.

He's been in other bands, or at least played a few gigs, as recently as 2015, but I haven't found any info on them.

Also: does anyone know how to find someone's myspace url if all you have is the friend id? :creep:

And here Bill comes being cool as heck with his guitar thinking he can write the next best American record :brows:

Ive been thinking BAR is about Steve Martens but certainly he wasn't writing songs so there's that

Or it could just be Barrie

Just posted this on the lyrics thread but thought it might be better here - this is why I think B A R is about Barrie

To me the context that makes the most sense is that the song is about Barrie. Here's why I think that:

'My baby used to dance underneath my architecture

To the houses of the holy

Smoking on them cigarettes'

This first bit might be a bit of a reach but I live in Glasgow (where Barrie lives/is from). There's a small venue called Oran Mor where Lana/Kassidy used to frequent, which has really ornate architecture and is an old church - in 2011 when Videos Games started to blow up she played an intimate gig there and Kassidy played several gigs there including one where they covered Video Games if my memory serves me correctly. If the song is about Barrie that could be a reference to a place that was special to them, and also since it used to be a church ties in with the houses of the holy part. I think there's an early interview where she talks about spending a lot of time in Glasgow.

'You were so obsessed with writing the next best American record

You did it all for fame'

I get that people think it can't be about Barrie because of the 'American' reference but I don't feel like that means that it needs to be from an American person, just the kind of global success that some iconic American albums have. Also the 'you did it all for the fame' lyrics could be to do with either their relationship, or him stepping out of her shadow or maybe even to do with him leaving his band and upping sticks to the states - he clearly did that to try and obtain some musical success for himself and left his long term band mates in his wake, and I wonder if it's a reference to that.

'You did it all for fame

Baby, how's life treating you now'

From what I know from living here and hearing stuff through mutual associates life is not treating him so well. He's back in Glasgow now, last I heard living with his family (before he moved with her he lived with the kassidy boys). He plays occasional local gigs around Glasgow at student unions and bars. Nowhere near the life style he would of had with Lana and if he was using her for fame or to boost his own connections and career maybe she feels bitter about that? Remember she put kassidy as the support on her tour, it's a big change to go from playing arenas all over Europe to tiny venues around the town you grew up in.

'How's that taste coming out'

This is a big reason I feel it's hinting at Barrie, cos of the famous 'my pussy tastes like Pepsi cola' lyric which she has said Barrie came up with. The story was something along the lines of him thinking allAmerican girls were magical with vaginas that tasted of Pepsi cola, I think this is quite a bitter line and again could tie in with the 'American' theme.

'He was seventies in spirit; nineties in his frame of mind'

Going back to Ultraviolence I think two songs there that are about Barrie are Brooklyn Baby and Shades of Blue. Brooklyn Baby references the 70s and also some of the actual clothes/style Barrie goes for is quite 70s. In terms of the 90s frame of mind I think this is referencing Kurt Cobain, who they both seem quite obsessed with. Shades of Blue seems to hint that Barrie has some troubles with depression, something she alluded to at the time of the break up in that interview she did too. To me 90s frame of mind is referencing Barrie's likeness to Kurt's depression.

hmmm.... I believe the song to possibly be about him, but we are never sure.

The "houses of the holy" part, I believe she is just referencing to the album by Led Zeppelin.

I also see it almost as some parts she is singing about the male,

but when the lyrics are "You did it all for fame, you were....next best american record....xxx" I feel like maybe she is singing from his perspective.

Like possibly the male is saying that Lana changed so much for fame and she wanted to write the next best american record

Just my thoughts :')

Lana has said that she takes two different guys and puts them into one song before. I have always thought that she's done this when changing from first to third person.

With this in mind, BAR is one of the songs she does this with. So when she is singing the intro about the architecture & houses of holy "he was cool as heck," I think she is talking about her boyfriend- and then when she switches to "but You were so obsessed & You did it all for fame," I definitely think she is talking to herself/Lizzy. Another reason I think this is because of "how does it feel 'now that it's over'," which makes it sound like the person she is talking to GOT their fame & is still searching for something else / not satisfied with it. Which isn't really true for any of her boyfriends, at least not to the extent that she has made it- famous.

This honestly could have been the turning point- this song- that made her realize she needed to search for something else now. A Lust For Life instead of the glory & fame she had always been after before. She knew she needed new inspiration and a new goal or drive to live her life. It could have been the starting point of the new album & why there were rumors this had been the original title.

A theory on Your Gal, I haven't looked into the exact dates but is it possibly that she wrote this song while on tour with Jimmy Gnecco? I remember after her tour with him (or during) she released the title song of Ultraviolence and they had to asure the Jim in that song was not related to him. I've always found it strange that there just happened to be a second Jim in Lana's life. But anyways, the lyrics in YG go "been on tour too long, had too much time to think," and then in the bridge it says "late at night, baby your my sign, call me late if you want to get high.... late at night you and I can get to know one another." What if this was written with the excruciating pain of having your long time crush and/or ex lover on tour with you, thinking about them constantly, knowing that they are sleeping in the hotel room across the hall from you, hoping to get that call in the middle of the night & maybe do drugs again together like you used to. "You and I can get to know one another..." Again.

I wish I was your* girl.

Not sure if this is the right thread to place this, but can we discuss the fact that not everything Lana writes in a song needs to have actually happened to her? If her inspirations are Leonard Cohen, Boby Dylan and Joan Baez isn't that a sign that she's not just a songwriter but also a storyteller? I think this is especially true for Sirens since it's the most Cohen / Dylan / Baez album she's written.

Not every song needs to be about a personal experience much like how every book isn't about a personal experience. Do you really think Stephen King went to a small town called Dairy where a clown that comes out every 27 years was killing children? Do you think Lana was an acrobat with 6 husbands (I don't remember exactly what it was, but she said something outrageous like that years ago) Songs have metaphors and made up stories to capture the listener.  Artists create personas to capture their audience. Lana does that well, maybe even too well since some people take everything she says as the gospel truth.
