Body Electric

Recommended Posts

Elvis is my daddy, Marilyn's my mother
Jesus is my bestest friend
We don't need nobody, 'cause we got each other
Or at least I pretend

We get down every Friday night
Dancin' and grindin' in the pale moonlight
Grand Ole Opry, we're feelin' alright
Mary prays the rosary for my broken mind
(I said don't worry 'bout it)

I sing the body electric
I sing the body electric, baby
I sing the body electric
I sing the body electric
Sing that body electric, sing that body electric
I'm on fire, sing that body electric

Whitman is my daddy, Monaco's my mother
Diamonds are my bestest friend
Heaven is my baby, Suicide's her father
Opulence is the end

We get down every Friday night
Dancin' and grindin' in the pale moonlight
Grand Ole Opry, we're feelin' alright
Mary prays the rosary for my broken mind

(I said don't worry 'bout it)

I sing the body electric
I sing the body electric, baby
I sing the body electric
I sing the body electric
Sing that body electric, sing that body electric
I'm on fire, sing that body electric

My clothes still smell like you
And all the photographs say that you're still young
I pretend I’m not hurt and go about the world like I’m havin’ fun

We get crazy every Friday night
Drop it like it’s hot in the pale moonlight
Grand Ole Opry, feelin’ alright
Mary's swaying softly to her heart's delight

I sing the body electric
I sing the body electric, baby
I sing the body electric
I sing the body electric
Sing that body electric, sing that body electric
I'm on fire, sing that body electric

I sing the body electric, baby
I sing the body electric, baby
I sing the body electric, baby

What Lana is saying in this song is she's the product of our popular culture. "body electric" could allude to television, movies.

Originally "I Sing the Body Electric" was a Walt Whitman poem. Then a Twilight Zone episode written by Ray Bradbury.

In the live version does she say Mary?

In the live version she only says "she prays the rosary for my broken mind."

She might start using Mary though, now that she has the studio version out and everyone knows what its actually supposed to be

When I heard the song for the first time, I had a feeling it was about suicide. (It is indeed mentioned but not the main theme.) It just sounded so... scary? Anyway, later I got the Whitman references but I still have many poems to read!

And the wind I know it’s cold

Isn't it 'Monica's my mother' not 'Monaco' as in Monica Lewinski?

I'm not sure how this song relates to the Whitman poem, any ideas?

:O

I'm pretty sure you're right though unless we had the lyrics from the Paradise booklet

Who or what does she mean by "Monaco"? Grace Kelly?

Becuase of the mention of "opulence," she's probably referring to the country of Monaco.

"According to the CIA World Factbook, Monaco has the world's lowest poverty rate and the highest number of millionaires and billionaires per capita in the world."
