Timeline of Lust for Life Songs

Recommended Posts

Hey, I've been home sick and I was just reflecting on Lust for Life and got to thinking if we have a good idea on when songs were created and all that?

1. Beautiful People - June 2014, originally intended for Big Eyes. The song sat in limbo with many versions being worked on from 2014 to 2017.

2. Lust for Life - September 2015, Lana began working on demo versions of this song “the day she put out Honeymoon”

3. Heroin - December 2015 - February 2016, Lana posted Sharon Tate to her burthdaykake account, emulated her style on the red carpet and more. The song has a clear Manson influence so it wouldn’t be too far off to figure this song was born around this time!

3. Love - April 2016, originally called Young and in Love.

4. 13 Beaches - May 2016, originally called Something Real.

5. God Bless America - November 2016, Lana’s said this song was created before the Women’s Marches of 2017, and around the time Trump was first elected.

6. Groupie Love - Apparently one of the earlier songs, Lana went to one of A$AP’s concerts in Nov 2016 and said she was inspired by the groupie chicks in his crowd.

7. Cherry / White Mustang - Lana stated in a Zane Lowe interview that both songs were created towards the end of the record. I'm leaning to anywhere after February 2017 - Since at that time the record was probably still called Best American Record, and had a different direction.

8. Coachella - April 2017, created on her way home from the Coachella festival.

9. In My Feelings - April - June 2017, with the song being about G-Eazy, it's conception only could've happened after Coachella when him and Lana stopped seing each other. It’s possible Lana reworked an original concept to be about G-Eazy

10. Change - June 8th, 2017, this song was created the night before the album was submitted to Interscope.

11. Get Free - It's unknown as to when the original version, Malibu, was created but it seems like it was also one of the earlier songs

I think Heroin was the second or first song she made for the album she said it on a recent interview and she also mentioned that it was from the early stages of the record and would set the tone to it a la West Coast but then the political climate change drastically the tone and the direction of the record making heroin stand by itself (sonically). 100% sure she has said this but i don't remember in which interview.

i will love you until the end of time.

I don't remember this at all? She said Lust for Life was the first song she created for the album...

Some little info about Cherry and White Mustang

0:34

I don't know what she meant by "by the end of the record" but I'm guessing both were made in 2017. I have no idea on which month though

Oh yes!! This makes me so excited for the next record being more like Cherry, WM, and IMF (saying that those were all done at the end) since Lana's creative direction obviously changed from 2015 Beautiful People slowness to 2017 Cherry production. you can also see how she attempted to do that with Coachella but the short amount of time really didn't work for her... It makes me wonder why it failed on Coachella but worked on IMF which would've been created around the same time? Anyways, I can see how she felt that songs like Yosemite and BAR just weren't gonna cut it (But arguably, she could've just thrown them in the 2nd half of the record..)

On a related note, I wonder what Change would sound like if it was completed a month before the album was submitted? Coachella-esque production?

Yeah I hope some songs sound like those but her creative direction will most likely change again so I'm also hoping for folky songs.

It's possible considering how the last songs were produced, but maybe she knows that trappy-like beats don't fit the lyrics and the melody for Change. Anyway, I'm glad that they didn't have enough time to do something weird to it lol.

Also, this may be a bit of reaching but there's a moment in the video (2:20) when she says that she was in this "quiet zone" where she was singing about the far west (California), and she mentions Malibu and Topanga. She said that BAR was related to Topanga (how though??), so maybe Heroin, BAR and Malibu Get Free were made around the same time? (2016, probably before June)

guys is that true she recorded a song with G-eazy called him & i and then Halsey took it?

Not the thread for this question, but I'll answer it. Go to this thread for future questions like this

Yes, supposedly. She was originally featured on it but after they split he changed his mine and recruited Halsey.

i think it would sound kinda like without you has a baby with 24, i think she would just add fx ,a better reverb, and more instrumentation :)

Hey everyone!
One thing I love to do is look at Lana's activity from when she was working on a record or what she says about working on a record and use that evidence to help formulate a timeline of when she began or finished writing songs on that record.

I feel like LFL was the perfect record to do this with, considering Lana was pretty active outside of the studio with this record, and a lot of it deals with themes that were very current and had to do with the real world.

Please share your ideas and thoughts and discuss!

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

September 2015 - November 2015
“Lust for Life" (solo, "art song" version)
-Lana states that this was the first song she wrote for the record
-in an interview with KROQ in July 2017, Lana states that she began working on the record the day she put out “Honeymoon”

December 2015 - February 2016
“Heroin”
-December 2015, Lana attends a Motley Crüe concert (“Life rocked me like Motley”)
-February 2016, Lana talks about “a clarity of inner dialogue” regarding her new album during a Billboard event
-that same event, her hair resembles that of an iconic look of Sharon Tate, whose death is referenced in the song (“Writing in blood on all my walls…” She also told Billboard mag in October 2015 that she was asked to play the role of Sharon Tate in a film

March 2016
“Get Free”
-Originally titled “Malibu” - Lana was spotted in Malibu frequently during this time, and the song was regarded as an earlier, darker track in the Billboard 2017 interview

-She posted about being in the studio this month

April 2016
“Love”
-Lana spotted with Emile Haynie frequently
-Love lyrics tweeted by insider/leaker as early as April 2016

“Groupie Love”
-Lana saw A$AP Rocky perform at Coachella, and has stated that she was inspired by Rocky’s “groupie” female fans

May 2016

“13 Beaches”/"Something Real"
-Lana spent a lot of time on the beach during Spring 2016 and in the Billboard 2017 interview, this was regarded as an earlier, darker track.

-She posted about being in the studio this month

(cr: @@Eclipse for month/year)

June 2016

"Yosemite"

-I know it's not on the record, but Lana was spotted at Yosemite National Park on June 13, 2016 with Chuck and Stella, so maybe around this time, she was inspired to write Yosemite?

July - August 2016
“13 Beaches” (also worked on in summer?)
as Paris Match Mag stated that Lana wrote the song “last summer” in spring 2017

September 2016
“Lust for Life” (recording with The Weeknd)
-Lana stated in an interview Zane Lowe for Beats Radio 1 that he jumped on the track soon after his dramatic haircut
-it was also around this time that Lana most likely recorded her vocals for The Weeknd's album, Starboy, which she featured on "Party Monster" and "Stargirl (Interlude)"

September 2016 - January 2017

“God Bless America - And All the Beautiful Women In It”
-Lana talked a lot about the importance of politics on social media and this was most likely the record’s “stylistic turn” she referred to in a KROQ interview in July 2017

October 2016
"Groupie Love"
-potentially re-recorded Rocky verse done during this time which was stated to be done 6 months after initial recording (potentially April 2016) in interview with Zane Lowe for Beats Radio 1

October 2016 - November 2016

"Best American Record"/"Architecture" VIDEO

- Again, not on the record, but I thought it should be included.

- I don't have any evidence as to when this track could have been potentially written but the video (which turned out to be for White Mustang) was most likely filmed in Oct/Nov 2016, so it was done before then. I would say it was an earlier track, so it could be anywhere from September 2015 (assuming it was a song written after HM) to the time the video was filmed

- lyrics posted on November 27, 2016:  http://lanaboards.com/index.php?/statuses/user/1645-eclipse/?status_id=109008

November 2016 - January 2017
"Groupie Love"
- another potential date, as Lana also saw A$AP Rocky at Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival with Stella in Nov. 2016 (seeing his female fans go wild for him, inspiring the song, as Lana has said)

“When the World Was at War We Kept Dancing”
-The timeframe between Trump’s election and appointment in office, and the song is a commentary and staying hopeful in the era of Trump

January 2017
“Tomorrow Never Came”
-Most likely worked on in 2016, but it is known that Sean Ono Lennon added his production and vocals around this time

March - April 2017
“Cherry”
-Stated that this was written “at the end of the record” in interview with Zane Lowe for Beats Radio 1
-finished before May 18, 2017

"Roses Bloom For You"

-Again, not on the record, but in a snippet Lana posted on Instagram in June 2017, she stated that she wrote the song in March in the caption.

“Coachella - Woodstock in My Mind”
-Began on Lana’s way home from Coachella on April 17, 2017
-Possibly worked on in May 2017 as well

“Beautiful People Beautiful Problems”
-Registered in 2015, possibly worked on with Justin Parker in 2012 OR Nov. 2015

- News of collab with Stevie Nicks broke in late April 2017, most likely track already had Stevie’s vocals ready in early-mid April 2017 before news was revealed

May  - June 2017
"Groupie Love"
-potentially re-recorded Rocky verse done during this time which was stated to be done 6 months after initial recording (potentially November 2016) in interview with Zane Lowe for Beats Radio 1

“Summer Bummer”
-one of the last songs for the record, considering the record “loosened up” as it progressed

-features "Magnolia" vocal stems from Playboi Carti, which was released in April 2017

-one version finished before June 2, 2017 (snippet posted that day)

“In My Feelings”
-after G-Eazy and Lana’s break-up in May 2017

“White Mustang”
-written about Barrie James O’Neill OR G-Eazy (most likely the latter, with Lana’s “AND IT WASN’T EVEN THAT GOOD!” comment at the Denver Show on 1/7/18)
-finished before June 8, 2017

“Change”
-last song written for the record
-written on June 8 at approx 8:00 PM and finished on June 9 at 2:00 AM (June 8 is the same day the WM snippet was posted, her cap and makeup from the recording sessions are the same as the snippet, a fan also saw her that day, confirming the date)

Just some things I wanted to add;

TNC was 'finished' in January, as she herself had thought that could've been the end of the record as iirc she said he tied up the whole thing

GBA was written closely before the womens marches- and they kinda colluded, im thinkin december-jan 2016-2017. she wanted it to be a single but her label didn't want to the controversy (ill have to find citation)

The BAR/Arch/WM video was posted Jan. 2017 iirc, I honestly do not think it was anywhere near 2016

Beautiful People, Beautiful Problems has been registered since 2015, I remember people saying HM had a deluxe version with Life Is Beautiful, Wild One, and Beautiful People as a rumor either before or around the time she released the tracklist on instagram

Also it's heavily argued (even moreso now) that the prechorus ended with "told by the fake news" > "told by the frightened" and I'm not too sure when Trump got REALLY into his whole 'fake media' bull for the song to have been written so closely after his election.

Also, we really don't have any info about Get Free. It wasn't retitled, she legit deleted Malibu altogether as she thought it was too personal to give to the public and started over again on GF. Whether or not she kept the melody or feel we really dk, only that Get Free is the phoenix that rose from Malibu

+ nice credits for Heroin, never really pieced those together but it would also make hella sense. Heroin being written off of the coattails of Honeymoon so soon after would make some sense and HM had a very lush noir and old Hollywood starlet feel, and besides LfL- no other track on the new record even mentions any form of old Hollywood besides Heroin

"movie stars and liquor stores in soft decay"

Thanks for the revisions! I'll update the OP :)

With the BAR video, though, I honestly thought it was filmed during that time because her fillers and overgrown bangs (lmao) matched the way they looked in Oct/Nov 2016 candids and the Corona Capital Show on Nov 20, 2016. Also, she filmed Love in 2016, and if BAR was the supposed title track, it would be plausible to have it filmed in late 2016 if she thought she finished the record with TNC in Jan 2017, but we don't know for sure, so I'll include that too.

I know BPBP was registered since 2015 (and I feel like I've read on here that Lana and Justin Parker worked on it in 2012 but I'm not sure if that's accurate?) but I was more thinking that the way we hear it now, with Stevie's voice, but I'll include that too.

With World at War, I totally agree, and  I feel like the whole theme is based in a world where Trump is a leader, so that's after the election, but it could've been a song that's potentially about the fear people had of Trump's reign, so it definitely could've been before too.

Great ideas! Glad to see your input! :)
