It Takes a Long Time to Get Over Yourself
"Oh, man. This letter has taken me an embarrassingly long time to write. Probably because I haven’t written anything but e-mails and Tweets for 12 years.
If the last year has taught me anything, it’s this: it takes a long time to get over yourself.
Last March, after 7 years on the road, I decided to take a break. I was excited about this. I’d imagined myself watching tv all day, being a “chill person”, eating doughnuts because I didn’t have to wear latex catsuits anymore. The reality: not quite the joy ride I’d been expecting.
I’ve been an artist for over a decade but up until this year, I hadn’t realised how much my sense of self had been defined by my role as an artist. I’d never thought of “Marina and the Diamonds” as a persona or a construct, and I didn’t think the stage-me was very different to the sofa-me. MATD was an exciting vehicle that helped me express ideas and thoughts to people. But just as people construct online personas, artist construct visual ones, and over time, the lines between art and reality can drift apart.
I can’t remember when I first became conscious of it but I started to feel like there were two parts of me, artist self and private self, and there was nothing in between to link the two anymore. I was one or the other, and neither part of my personality could be present in the same environment. Perhaps because I’d spent most of the past 8 years devoted to being an artist and this hadn’t presented many opportunities for other parts of my personality to grow. When one part of a personality dominates, other parts shrink and life can take on an unreal, two- dimensional quality. I felt confused as to why I no longer felt like I longer fit into the world I’d built. I don’t think my feelings are exceptional (particularly in entertainment) but I wonder if you are someone who has experienced this in a different context.
I’ve always been interested in identity. In my twenties, I felt frustrated by how regularly my identity seemed to shift and change until I began to consider the idea that a fixed self may not exist. I explored this in “Electra Heart” by deconstructing aspects of female identity in a portrayal of female archetypes. However, the past year has made me re-examine this idea. Not being able to equate my identity to a job, project or visible entity has created a lot of discomfort and uncertainty in me. Which has been a surprise, as I thought I felt secure in myself. How can I be so sure of who I am if I am so susceptible to change? A lot of what contributes to our idea of identity is down to pure chance - ethnicity, social class, upbringing, religion, job, relationships - who are we without influences?
Everything in western culture feels so geared towards self-definition, but I wonder if having a looser idea of yourself could make life richer. The past year hasn’t been full of rainbows - I feel like my brain has been brutally rewired - but letting go of a perceived idea of myself has resulted in a new kind of personal freedom. My image is no longer a main source of identity, nor are previous signifiers like clothing (more on this in a future post), designer brands + other things I subconsciously used to define myself.
Lasting change rarely happens over night. This past year has been painful and slow. But I’m in a more genuine space than I was a year ago and I would never want to go back to that stunted way of being again. In fact, the only solace I had in this period was being able to read the books and blogs of other people experiencing significant life transitions, so I hope this might be of help to anyone who is going through a similar stage.
Truth is, I’m not planning ahead much right now. I am indeed going through my “what should I do with the rest of my life” phase that most people go through at 21. Which is... cool. But I’m grateful to have the opportunity to explore different interests, and starting marinabook is a part of that. I’m starting a Psychology course soon, which I am SO excited about, and I’m ready for a brand new chapter. I hope you’ll be a part of it.
Some people have been asking about new music and I’m always flattered to be asked. I know one year is like an aeon in digital time. The honest answer is I don’t know when that will be, but the connection I have with music has always flowered from an honest connection with myself, and I trust my instincts.
Whenever I get back on stage again, I would love to feel like I am the sum of my parts, not the sum of a persona or an image. That’s the goal. A lot of reality with a little bit of fantasy. So, marinabook is a way for us to stay connected while I work that out.
I miss you all!

Love from, Marina"

Heavier/darker music doesn't always have to be depressing.

Lana's nominated for best solo artist at the Q awards! They're not quite the Grammys but they have some cred in the UK. She's up against St Vincent, Liam Gallagher, Stormzy and Ed fuckin' Sheeran . Wonder if she'll attend...?

Also I feel like being in the front row, other fans would totally ruin the show for me. I don't need people singing the lyrics LOUDER than Lana in my ear. Pushing me, shoving me, elbowing me, trying to get to the barricade. SO many fights broke out last time and the entire crowd was just moving like a sea of people.. no thanks..
And to think just 5 years ago I saw Lana perform in a room with no one else there except for her band and a video camera.. ughhh take me the fuck back

Laughing at the fact that y'all are soo concerned with Lana deleting her posts and calling her crazy and dramatic when her fanbase & Lanaboards are both full of overly medicated depressed twinks that define the word dramatic.
Let Lana delete her posts in peace. The world is scary and it's getting scarier by the day, let her be. I think it's beautiful that she is aware of the chaos around her and isn't just swimming around in her own problems.

the way i remember it, dan wasn't used to so much hand force from a label and Lana was shrugging it off while he got really angry about this kind of management. (This was after BTD/PE, it was another time.) Her label asked her to meet with another producer and she said yes but went to the meeting too late and the producer she was meant to see (one of Adele's) had time to listen to what lana and dan had already done (which her label hated) and they liked it so much they didn't want to touch it. Then suddenly everyone at the label started seeing the light liking the tracks/production and lana, like the boss she is, continued on her merry way undisturbed without putting a fight. Someone on top at interscope even said that others requested a single/hit from lana and he was like no, you get what you're going to get; that she had her own vision and everyone else only had to follow her way. How I see it, Lana downplayed all that and got the sound she wanted without much of a fuss.
Even the management at her indie label company (AKA) said that you couldn't make lana do something she didn't want, that she was headstrong and determined enough. For me, Lana has the talent and the means to have come up with huge hits by now if she wanted. I do think she has some pressure, like everyone of us from work and school, but not what we imagine or to the same level as the biggest pop stars/rappers. Otherwise I can't explain how chill she is. Plus she works so much and she releases (#1) albums at a higher frequency than most these days lana is the true boss

Thank god I didn't come out wrong then because when i was saying she wasn't going to do something that she didn't want i wasn't implying that lana has disappeared to learn korean so she could release a kpop album in 2018.
I know what a contract entails, and Lana if i'm not wrong, is still also somewhat paying back her old label? But I was only implying that what her labels demands of her most of the time is aligned with what lana likes to do in the first place and she has a huge amount of artistic freedom compared of what i know of the music industry. If we believe what she and Dan say about uv that means she almost produced an album on a whim, during two weeks with a man she met at a party even tho her people at interscope/polydor wanted her to work with someone else (her words). She didn't even know about Dan's music in the first place. I mean that's impressive. Also she pulls a uni student card by including Change, a song at the last minute, a day before submitting her work - on a record that is already one hour long- and scraps away quality songs she already announced because they finally didn't correspond to her vision ... She at least gives the impression to be very in charge

Cruel World > Heroin but not by far
btw LFL > UV > HM > PD > BTD
I'm not talking in terms of iconic songs that the albums contain, but in terms of cohesiveness, general quality and atmosphere. As an example, BTD contains 4 songs that are in my top 10 of all Lana songs, but it also has a lot of fillers, unnecessary songs. Her voice is too edited and basically all the songs are overproduced. This album in itself is a mess, even though there are 4 absolute masterpieces on it: Born To Die, National Anthem, Off To The Races and Video Games.
Besides, LFL doesn't have any track that I would put in my top 10, but it also doesn't have any track that I dislike - except Coachella. It's more mature, more intelligent, more open, more diverse yet coherent.

I love the album.
It took a little to grow on me but I really enjoy it now, to the point where I can't decide whether I like it better than Honeymoon and Ultraviolence or not.
Either way, she's proved once again that she still has "it". It won't take her too long to achieve legendary status (to me she has already).
