Now that I think about it, June 2nd is actually a great release date. It's only three days after Maleficent comes out in theaters so hype will definitely be building due to Once Upon a Dream. I think that's a smart move. I, personally, won't mind the wait as long as we get something along the way (West Coast video, promotional photos, tracklist, cover art, etc)
  2. sjrq liked a post in a topic by Your Girl Lana in West Coast Debuts at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100
"Her new song appears headed for the list's top half next week thanks to expected high sales following her buzzworthy Coachella set"Lana Del Rey's new single "West Coast" looks likely to debut in the upper half of next week's Billboard Hot 100. Highlights of the chart, which blends songs' sales data, via Nielsen SoundScan, and airplay and streaming figures, according to Nielsen BDS, will post on Billboard.com on Wednesday (April 23), while the survey will update in full the following day.

Industry sources suggest that the song, the studio version of which was made available for purchase on Monday (14) after she'd premiered the song live the night before for throngs of fans at the Coachella festival, could sell 110,000-120,000 downloads for the SoundScan tracking week ending Sunday (20). While the track is not yet being actively promoted to radio by Interscope Records, its sales and any early airplay and streaming should spur a start in the Hot 100's top 50, with a top 40, or higher, launch possible.
Del Rey has charted three titles on the Hot 100 so far: "Video Games," which spent a week at No. 91 (Jan. 28, 2012); "Young and Beautiful," which reached No. 22 last June; and "Summertime Sadness," which soared to No. 6 in September after it was remixed by Cedric Gervais.
She co-wrote "Coast" with Rick Nowels, who also co-wrote "Young" and "Summertime" and has been a chart visitor since the mid-'80s, having penned hits for and/or with Belinda Carlisle (the No. 1 "Heaven Is a Place on Earth"), Madonna, Dido, John Legend, Colbie Caillat and others.
"People are starving for real artistry," Nowels told Billboard last year. "As more people hear [Del Rey's] music, she's gaining more fans."
Del Rey is working with the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach on her new album, "Ultraviolence." While a release date has not been announced for the set, sources say it won't reach retailers before June. Her major label debut, "Born to Die," crossed the one million-sold mark in March, according to SoundScan. The set debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart following its release on Jan. 31, 2012. She followed with the "Paradise" EP later that year, which hit No. 10 and has sold 332,000.
Del Rey's Coachella performance and anticipation for her new music has already resulted in gains for her social profile. She was the most-mentioned artist during the first weekend of Coachella last weekend, according to data gathered and compiled by Twitter. She rises 42-37 on Billboard's Social 50 chart this week, with 137,000 mentions of her name on Twitter (up 158 percent over the previous week) and an 83 percent rise in conversation on Facebook.

It's true, there are a lot of mashups on youtube with both songs, my fav being: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMe8ZrF_gH0

It's funny because I find myself listening to the BJ instrumental and singing WG instead or singing the WG chorus instead of BJ's. It fits quite well I find Especially if you think of the BJ lyrics being the girl's perspective and WG being the guy's.

I read this review and sort of chuckled. Sometimes the audience is so loud it drowns Lana out. It's fun in a way but sometimes a little too much lol. I want to hear Lana sing, not a thousand screeching banshees.

Review: Lana Del Rey dazzles in San Francisco

The weeks had turned to months, then years. Some probably thought it might never happen. Others surely kept the faith, and their fingers crossed.

Finally, the moment was at hand. And these fans acted accordingly:

    They roared.

The sound of pure joy, cranked up to approximately jet engine volume, was what greeted Lana Del Rey as she finally took to the stage in San Francisco on Friday night. It was the torch singer's first official Bay Area gig, not counting an appearance at a record store a few years back.

    And she'd make it count.

The New Yorker, who was on the West Coast to perform at Southern California's mammoth Coachella music festival, delivered a dizzying, hypnotic evening of music for the capacity crowd of some 8,000 exuberant fans at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.

He spends the first half of the video expressing his rather unfounded bias against her before he even gets to the review and stops reviewing the song after a minute to continue hating on her because his music taste is so superior & only he is able to see that Lana's team has created her an image for a target audience, thus her music can't be good, he must be really smart. Whether you like WC or not, this review is laughable

My personal belief is that she sings like a storyteller. In Boarding School, for example, she sings about being pro-anorexia alongside other serious things but I don't believe she honestly believes these things. She is a storyteller; she undergoes different people and different lives and tells stories. Half the stuff she sings about are unlikely to have even happened to her, but she is such a fantastic storyteller that she can sing in such excessive detail and make us believe it's truthful.

Remember: Lana did say this album would be "unlistenable". She wasn't going to be simply singing about missing a lover, she was bound to stray into dangerous territory. Some of that may anger some of you, some of you may find it completely fine. Regardless of that, this is the reaction Lana wanted; she chose to sing about such dark topics to make the album more personal.

I LOVE Hollywood, its an amazing, epic song. Still, I'd rather get an album of all new music than a song I've been able to listen to for 6+ months. I'll happily take a record that is stylistically very similar to Hollywood and the other songs that came out around the same time (Black Beauty, Angels Forever Forever Angels, JFK and Starry Eyed I believe). But I want all new music. Give them to us as polished up bonus tracks and I'd be fine with that. I'm surprised at how many want songs we've already had for a while on the album.

If that June 2nd release date is accurate, not at all disappointing for me, I can wait another month. May to June is not a big deal, my fear was that we wouldn't get anything til the fall. That would have been excrutiating.

The universal critical acclaim, unexpected commercial success, and the two incredible live performances are so much more than we could have asked for. So happy for her.

Really hoping that this album earns Lana a high MetaCritic score and a few Grammy noms...maybe even a win for one of the rock categories.
  10. Hallo Heaven liked a post in a topic by sjrq in Lana accent
I've never heard Lana speak with a New York accent, but it can be heard in her singing.  For example, the way she says "dirty" in "Behind Closed Doors" is straight out of NYC.  (I worked there for three years.)  In the fadeout at the end of the song (behind closed doors, doors, doors, etc.), she clearly says "doas, doas, doas" with the almost silent "r", which is common to various degrees all over the northeast.  (For those outside of the U.S., there are many, many accents in this country.  If one drives up I-95 from NY to Massachusetts, the accents are much different and easily identifiable.  Accents in Houston and Dallas are different, too.  No one on the TV show "Dallas" sounds anything like they are from Dallas - not to me, anyway, and I've lived there.)

Lana has great control of her voice, and the southern inflection she injects into some of her early songs is pretty much perfect.  She doesn't overdo it, so it sounds smooth and natural.

I think the best song in the Black Beauty era leaks was "Hollywood", believe it or not.  I still listen to it all the time.

Lana said she picked the name "Lana Del Rey" at least in part due to the influence of some Cuban friends down in Florida, so that could be the connection.  Maybe true, maybe she made it up....

Wonderful song, and I think Lana's performance of it at Coachella has permanently buried SNL.  Now she is going to be a rock goddess, and I hope we don't lose her with all of the heightened expectations - not to mention temptations -  that come with being a superstar.
