Woah just fucking woah

Erika Lee Sears (who painted the cover to Vioket) just posted the perfect summarize to the whole debacle about Lana’s recent antics in her Insta stories. This is how I feel about her.

If WHF is anywhere in that vein of THAT IG post, I am so here for it. I looovvvveeee Old Hollywood.

I so fucking agree. I was proud of her Grammy noms because I saw it as a way to be recognized by the same industry that punched her in 2012. But honestly, to see NFR get the same treatment as Lemonade just confirms how irrelevant the Grammy are. No, having a 19 year-old winning everything, as talented as she is and no matter how good her album was, is no proof of relevance. Anyways, I decided years ago that I love what I love, no matter how popular or not that thing is.

I love UV, it’s one of her best ones ever and sure did break the “curse of the second album when the first one was so successful”. I love how guitars add up to her cynicism. However, I don’t see working with Dan possible anymore or very likely for two reasons: 1- there have been tensions between the two of them, some misunderstanding while working on some songs. Nothing that they couldn’t get over, at the end of the day, but still. Jack and Rick really seem to be “yes men”, in a way, and she probably will go work with whoever she feels will be easy to work with (boss around?!?) 2- he did reach for her, to produce a song or two, when she was making HM, but she turned him down because it was not the aesthetics of the record. I don’t know Much about Dan Auerbach, but that would seriously compromise my will to work with the girl. I’d love to have more rock influences on one of her records and Dan did contribute to a lot to UV, but I’m telling myself it’s a “once-in-a-lifetime” album.

Just posted something similar in the WHF thread, but maybe she’ll drop a single next week to make us forget, same way she dropped Mariners and Venice just a week or two after her “Middle East debacle” (I wouldn’t mind no single at all: I still love NFR so much).

It’s true for the zodiac signs influence... It could come up in a couple of songs, maybe? As for a lead single... Maybe? Or the “surprise release” could mean no single before the album? I like that it’s almost the normal order this time around (if things don’t get fucked up): release date, possible single (even if pretty much all artists release a lead then announce LP’s date and artwork).

Ah! The drama!!! It’s half the fun of being a Lana Stan!!!!

Songs about heartbreak and being in love / wanting to be in love. Some songs will have a similar sound to NFR, plus it could be out around the same time of the year. Maybe she’ll go a bit crazier on the production of some songs? The last songs recorded for NFR had “heavier production”, as opposed to the first ones that were essentially piano ballads. But hey, who knows if she won’t want to mix it up a bit or has already has?

I don’t comment much on her « behaviour » because we don’t know her personally. Plus who she should be hers alone ; her art is what we can make ours, in a way. The two posts weren’t perfect but were far from being that controversial. She did say herself she was ADHD or, at least, she is impulsive. So, to me, it’s what it’s about, when she comments some more. I get she is defensive (who wouldn’t be after the early backlash she received with BTD?), and I have made a couple of posts about the music industry that is very misogynistic and has a very limited view of what « female power / feminism » should be (it’s pretty much to want sex all the time to be liberated). My only question, when I saw the first post, was: Did she get dragged down recently? Because after NFR, the critics really toned down and people are finally getting that she is a talented singer-songwriter.

We’re not sure about the name. She would have told a fan, this past fall, that it might not be called WHF anymore, but the exchange didn’t get recorded. So 50-50? As for pre-release vs pre-pre, who knows? I know many of you don’t believe the date to be true, but there’s a strong possibility of coming through since it is that precise. Technically, is it pre-release when there’s the lead single? If so, we’ll we get one since she wanted « a surprise release » or her definition of it (with a possible title, two confirmed track names and a release date)?
-
Either it’s her version of « surprise release », as in « no snippets, or her record company didn’t think it was as good strategy after all? Or she can’t keep her mouth shut as usual. Anyways, It’s going to go by very quickly if the date doesn’t change. I’m still not over NFR and still play it almost daily.

I liked the snippet game in the LFL era. She had teased six tracks other than the singles and we had a couple of nice surprises (Heroin, Get Free, 13 Beaches...). I also like that all songs teased in snippet form do make it into a record (except RBFY, but she did say it wouldn’t make the LFL cut - still don’t know to this day why she teased a beautiful song we’ll never get to hear in the near future). But the NFR era was something else. In October, when she teased many of the songs, I really thought the damn album was coming sooner than what we had. Plus the HTD demo that changed completely... So yeah, an album trailer or just a lead single or no single at all, and the total surprise when the album drops.

What was the May 1 date again? I don’t think it came form her officially... The more precise a date given for her is, the higher the chances it will come through. If I’m right, apart from « Violet out Jan 4 », all of her other precise dates checked out. But I agree with you that « top of the year » or « soon » or « in a couple of months » don’t mean shit.

I really hope she keeps quiet about this album before its release. A lead single would be nice, but if she releases the whole thing all at once on Sept 4-5 (if that date stays the same), I'd be a happy camper. I loved the snippet game with the LFL and NFR pre-release eras, but I'm still not over the fact that she teased demos that changed a lot on the album (okay, it's mostly How to Disappear, but still).

UV was raw and brutally honest. WHF (or whatever the fuck it will be named), if it's about heartache, might also be raw, but we'll never be on par with UV. Yes, UV is about a destructive relationship with a married man, but it's also about wanting to make it in the music industry, and being blasé about it. I don't see that theme being repeated on WHF (but who knows?) Exactly! Just the «Give me Hallmark, one dream, one life, one lover» is just so rich because it's the whole «Lana spirit» when it comes to love.
-
I don't expect to go «back to her roots» at all. If the early report received earlier this year is true, the album would consist of songs of wanting to be in love, feeling hopeless since he is gone... Like all the normal early stages we do get into and feel when we break up. But the message «I need a man and want to be in love» could be badly received because «It's not super feminist to think so» and bla bla bla (although feminism has a very strange definition in pop music, which is being as sleezy as the «cheating men» and wanting to fuck all the time to be «liberated»)

I’m getting Honeymoon pre-release period (which was my fave from her), if she sticks to Sept 4 or 5. Only a year after UV, which I was still loving everyday, almost no interviews and singles over a short period of time. Arguments for a Sept 4-5 release : She had nothing else to do during quarantine : no shows, no MV to film, hot breakup that she wanted to write about (to close that chapter of her life?). Jack seems to have spent a lot of time on the studio and there were Probably no « flying to LA to record », which saves a lot of time for creation. When she announces a precise date to a project, her track record is better at coming through (except for the poetry book, all the other PRECISE dates came through, I think, and I ain’t talking about « soon » or « next year » or « in a couple of months »). The poetry book (audio) seems to have a better direction / planing after a year of teasing and almost nothing, and should not interfere with the creation of LDR7 (maybe). Arguments against : Well, it’s Lana and she could want to completely shift the tone of the damn thing.
