The lyrics and the overall sound... ugh, so dark and tantalizing. Imagine what she could do with it now.

Um, it'd be one thing if she said something like, "Feminism or lack thereof does not enter my consciousness when writing songs, nor should it have to. To be frank, I just don't have an interest in feminism. I also don't believe that art should have to adhere to ~socially correct~ conventions nor should it have to be ~progressive~. I write about my fucking personal experiences, and I'm not about to comprise my art to pacify those that don't respect how I chose to live my life with the person I loved during a time I felt happy and fulfilled."

But no, she didn't. It's one thing to state a lack of engaged/active interest, it's another to DISMISS a social and political movement that has undoubtedly bettered the lives of countless women around the world, including HER. Christ. Cringing hardcore at the "LOLOL FEMINISM IS SILLY AND TRIVIAL IN COMPARISON TO SPACE AND SCIENCE I AM SMART". It just kills me when Lana does her faux-intellectual schtick (politics, metaphysics, etc), because she always comes out looking like a complete idiot.

Picked up I Never Learn on the first day and haven't stopped playing it since. She sounds so broken on the record, but at the same time, I feel like she isn't looking for comfort. It's definitely more emotive than her previous records. My only issue with it (besides just being 9 songs) is that there isn't much diversity in the tracks. They all sound big and echoey, mostly in the choruses, with quiet moody versus. It's not too much of a problem, I still love it. Really the only one I don't care for is Silver Line, despite it being the lighter of the bunch.

Interested to know where she is going to take her sound in the future and how it will change. She doesn't seem that much interested in going back to Youth Novels, which I know a lot of people prefer.

I recall LDR mentioning that she likes a "colliding world" aesthetic where she juxtaposes conflicting or inconsistent ideas. This was an early interview, which I could not refind, so maybe I just hallucinated it, but even so it's an interesting way to think about her work. Early album names like "Rock me stable" make sense to me in this regard. With "Sirens" it's the double meaning of the word sirens (lethally beautiful mythological women/police sirens). AKA's cover is a bit of a hot mess, though I suppose the racing jacket over the glittery bra/glamour-gown is a kind of a colliding world statement. The Born to Die cover is my favorite. It strikes me as preacher's daughter's attitude (harsh, almost prudish stare), but then there's that smoking red bra underneath the starched white shirt. This is the red vs. white LDR duality (that @@DeadAgainst talks about) manifesting at the same time. Paradise is the most of a stretch for me. Maybe it's the word paradise combined with her bitchy expression, or maybe it's the palm trees combined with the man-made pool. Or maybe it just doesn't work. Finally, Ultraviolence is the juxtaposition of a serene Lana (if somewhat stark and skull-like, in terms of the shape of the face) with a title that many have pointed out is a non-sequiter for a visual. However, in this context it's a sequiter. While I wonder (with @@PrettyBaby) what the ultraviolence is and suspect it is emotional/psychological, I also wonder whether she'll be on the receiving vs. giving side of it (at least some of her unreleased like songs like serial killer and she's not me depict the latter).

Finally, again count your blessings, if Lorde is the "anti-pop star", her debut album cover really sucked (but it probably didn't hurt her sales any). So the UV cover could also be taken as a kind of "anti-Lorde" album cover: a brand name, so familiar it doesn't even need a name, stepping out of a more-expensive-to-maintain-than-buy bit of oppulence -- that is if you know that's her vintage Mercedes she was getting out of.

I like it. I'm not in love with it. The only reason I'm listening to it on repeat is because it's an official single.

I do like the direction she's going. It's definitely not stripped-back as I expected. I always enjoyed her more rock-oriented demos/songs, so I'm really loving the guitar and the tempo change. I just wish her vocals were less filtered and there was more, I don't know, space between the arrangement. The lyrics are nothing to write home about, no matter how deep some people are going to make them out to be. However, I didn't like a lot of the tracks of Born to Die and Paradise, but after some time, some of those tracks became my favorites, so who knows, in the near future I might come back to this and love it.

I think one of the main reasons she's changing the sound is to appeal to a much older crowd. I don't know if it's radio-friendly and it probably won't last long on the iTunes charts. And I'm worried that some critics will think she's trying to hard with it. Which, admittedly, I kind of think so. Anyway, it's only a snapshot of the album so I'm not going to judge it. I'm just happy that the new era has started. Really looking forward to the music video.

According to EW this is what the plot will be about:

"Set in Jupiter, Florida, in 1950, Freak Show finds Jessica Lange playing a German ex-pat who is managing one of the last freak shows in the U.S. Her group of “unusuals”? Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, and Frances Conroy all play performers whom Lange’s character has rescued; Denis O’Hare and Emma Roberts are also in talks to return. Freak Show’s 13 episodes will track this group as they do anything to keep their business around."

    "I Never Learn" (6th March 2014)
    Tracklist:
I Never Learn No Rest for the Wicked Just Like a Dream Silverline Gunshot Love Me Like I’m Not Made of Stone [Official Video] Never Gonna Love Again Heart of Steel Sleeping Alone

Every song on the album is a power ballad. Like one of those old radio stations. This is a slow dance; a slow burner.
I wrote [“No Rest for the Wicked”] in Sweden when I was packing up my shit, and I’d just gotten out of a relationship and it was a horrible time. I just had the hurt, shame, sadness, guilt, longing. In the verse, I’m referring to myself pleading guilty but I’m referring to all of us.

I adore her. I can't even count how many times I've listened to Wounded Rhymes. It's a classic for me and puts me in a trance. I just want to walk through an abandoned city on some island by the sea and just listen to her music on a record player or something. I always find myself going back to her videos for "I Follow Rivers" and "Sadness is a Blessing." I wish she continued it for "Love Out of Lust". It would have been a nice trilogy. The acoustic versions on her iTunes Sessions are also beautiful.

Hopefully, she'll release the album around the same time Lana does. I have my iTunes gift card saved up for both of them. The music sounds nice, but I don't want to wear myself out from listening to it. I was worried she wouldn't be able to top her second album, but the song snippet sounds lovely (ethereal and folky) and different in a good way. Doesn't it sort have a seventies vibe to it, like psychedelic pop? Or is that just me. Anyway, I'm happy. The movie that she's in comes out this year, doesn't it?

I love it. Lana's best songs in my opinion are the ones that conjure vivid imagery and mood and for me I can already see the dark, twisted forest and the swirling mist around her as she sings the song. I might be the only one in this, but did anyone kind of get a Hocus Pocus vibe (Come Little Children) from the way she sang some parts of the song. I don't know, but I love it and I'll play it to death in my bedroom in the dark until a video comes out.
