I think Ultraviolence is a pretty good song, obviously not her best, but I prefer it over Shades of Cool (West Coast is still my favorite so far). Unlike most people here, I really love the Deadly Nightshade/Poison Ivy references. She's comparing herself to plants that are dangerously beautiful -- very pretty to the eye but could kill you with one touch. I think it's sort of brilliant actually, it fits with the whole persona Lana's been building all of this time tying in danger, sex, glamour, etc. Lyrically, I think she could have done a little more with the song. I agree with @@Deadly Nightshade in the sense that she had the chance to create a really great story, but it seems the plot line is just a bit flat. I do appreciate the little dip into her past, though.

As far as the production goes, I like it but it just seems like with this song, and all three songs so far, her voice sounds sort of muffled and quiet at times with all the live instrumentation. I know that's probably something Lana/Dan wanted when producing the album but I, personally, just don't like it. Lana's voice should be the focal point of the songs and the live music should enhance it, not drown it out. Overall, I'd probably give Ultraviolence 3/5 stars. I won't put it on repeat, but it won't go un-played in my library.

I think the main problem with the lyrics (at least for me) Is that she had this GREAT SHOT at making a masterpiece about abuse, love, and her (or someone else's for all we now) story you know?? Like she has the right intention. But for me, the lyrics aren't as great as they could've been, they deliver the message but not in the beautiful or strong way her vocals do idk if someone feels like this too

I think I she sounded so  much more passionate and genuine in the live version especially with the line ' I would do anything for you'  that realness is what made it so haunting  for me - but this version is still beautiful

the only line I don't like is 'he used to call me DN' bc I think it sounds really dumb like cmon Lana clearly he did not call you DN he fucking called you Lizzy or Lana

I am disgusted with some of the 'fans' on here. That they feel so superior for loving every single piece of music Lana creates, they sycophantically accpet everything as perfection and abusively dismiss others criticism like trolls. It must be age or intellectual under development.

My opinion on Lanas latest is that so far I am underwhelmed and nothing is matching BTD era. I am a Lana fan, not a Lizzy Grant fan. The styles are very different. This does not make me a hanger on or less of a fan. BTd is my favourite album of the last decade. Perfection. I am withholding judgement until the album is out in full as sometimes music is better as a whole, not heard as 1 track. Fingers crossed.

As for those who don't like it when people have a different opinion; grow up and get over it.

I know people have been complaining about the vocal mixing on this album thus far. I was actually fine with West Coast and Shades of Cool though. But this? These vocals, man... they just sound messy to me.

I think listening to the live version so much really gassed up my expectations for the studio version. I love it because it's ULTRAVIOLENCE, and I really adore the lyrics, but the production just seems a little too rough-drafty for a studio version. I don't know how to feel about the spoken bridge; it sounds so different live, so much more intimate and almost upsetting. It seems rushed and impersonal in the studio version. I'll probably feel differently when I hear it on the album following Cruel World and preceding Shades of Cool.

I love it, but I'm not in love with it, you know?

Better than Shades of Cool, but not as ~free~ sounding as West Coast.

I really don't understand why people are including Brooklyn Baby in their comparisons, some even going so far as to name it their favorite song. We have a 30 second snippet of a nearly 6 minute song. I think it's a little too early to say it's the best song.

I'm glad that she doesn't use the left-out footage of the West Coast video like some of you assumed ! I hope she has an epic idea popping up in her mind because a song called Ultraviolence deserves to get an iconic music video.
