Judging by her offerings from the Big Eyes soundtrack, I expect excellence from Lana. I want her to continue to grow and explore herself as a woman and artist, and then pour all of that into the new music. I loved Ultraviolence, so I am excited. Hopefully, she will connect with Rick Nowels and some of the other gals who have helped her create, what is to me, her best work.

Initially, i immediately loved the vocal grandness of  I Can Fly, but I was unable to get Big Eyes. However, now out of the two, Big Eyes has become my favorite. Both songs stand as symbols of Lana's growth as an artist, particularly, a vocal perfectionist. Big Eyes, though. Wow. It is well written, sinister in the way Lana delivers it vocally, and elegantly harsh, especially in those last lines of the second verse where Lana goes,
"Your world was burning and I stood watching
As I looked on, the flames grew high
    You watched me frown
    I said "goodbye" .

    Work, Lana!

The first verse's "I saw you creeping around the garden; what are you hiding?" There is something about that line, the way that she sings it, as it opens the song, that captures every part of me. The image it creates is clear and vivid due to Lana's emotive skills.

Lana is one of the many celebrity queens of shade, I see.

This is amazing. It is why I just WON'T understand (LOL...in some cases, though I guess I could) why so many critics refer to Lana as a fraud, a this, a that, all of these pejorative terms. She is a trendsetter. In my opinion, a true critic researches his or her subjects thoroughly, as to come to the most well-read conclusion. Anyone who has dug beneath the surface of Ms. Del Rey, all the way back to the Siren era and beyond, would know that my girl has been slaying for years and has only refined what she has ALWAYS done. She has been different from the get-go. I love when people JUST get on board and act as if things are brand new.

I have yet to listen to the entire album, for I will be purchasing it later today, but am I the only one who is getting absolute life from what I perceive to be an elegant, dark retelling of one woman's romantic life, psychosis, and trials? OMGoodness. I just cannot take it. I have only listened to "Cruel World" and "Sad Girl," outside of the promo singles because I just could not help myself, and I am caught up in a beautiful raging of feminine power. It is breezy, gloomy, gutta, and so delicately told, this story Lana is conveying. Work! **Snaps fingers three times for the mother**

No shade, was I the only one who thought the argument, even as a joke, was quite compelling?

Yeas, Lana you better channel the legendary goddess Joni in your music, because you do it so damn well. Both ladies convey an unfiltered liberty and freedom in their music that is so iconic.

And who did not know Lana loves to dance? Where is the . Gif of Lana giving us a good 'ol country ho-down twitch of her hip in her cowgirl ensemble? Or how about the receipt of her giving us a 70s wig whip in the Shades of Cool video?

Anyhow, this was a good interview. I am unhappy to read that she is dealing with depression, but I guess that is what makes her music so appealing to many of us. She is the queen of refined and elegant doom.

I agree with you. I was so excited for the track because I assumed it would have the same opening lines and melody. There was something so ethereal and ominous about the whole "Let the light in...It's a cruel, cruel wooo-oorlddd." Just the way Lana sung it and moaned those "Ohs" in succession, it made my skin crawl with delight. When I heard the actual track, I was surprised and a bit disappointed as well. Thankfully, "Cruel World" is still one of my favorite songs from the new album.

That is what I wanted. I just knew Lana was going to give us fierce cult glamour teas. Oh, well. While the video does leave a whole lot to be desired, she is still, without a doubt, my favorite music bitch. Even with its blandness, the video conveys the darkness I always crave from Lana.

And not for nothing, but no other music diva, other than Bey can emote for all of their life, to the most bland of music. She is a natural actress. She was giving me face, expression, and feeling. And her face, it is surgically SNATCHED. She looked amazing.

This song is fun and reminds me of "Hollywood" in how it glamourizes drug use and liberal fellowship.

As I listen to it, I easily hear TLC singing this song. It totally sounds like something T-Boz and the girls would have slayed years ago.

What I love about this is that these are two  well-read individuals who have truly done their research regarding Queen Lana. They are making VIABLE deductions and quantifications based on what they KNOW and have actually RESEARCHED. This is such a welcome discourse in comparison to those we are used to regarding any Lana discussion, where pseudo intellectuals and idiots bash her without any good reason. Jon, the guy who is so supportive of her, is clearly a fan. I love that. He lives for her and was defending her at every turn. I love when people find the beauty in Lana, the beauty all of us on this site find in the Queen. Amazing discussion. SO GOOD!

I voted that I liked them equally.

There is nothing I can say about UV that hasn't been said already. I can listen to it all the way through, in fact it took many, many listens before I was comfortable listening to the non-single songs without hearing the whole thing. There isn't a song on there that I just can't to listen to, unlike BTD (and Paradise because I think it is significant enough to be in this discussion as well).

But with that said, some of the songs on BTD are just magical. Born to Die (song), Video Games, Blue Jeans, National Anthem, Summertime Sadness.. those songs are just legendary on their own and all have beautiful videos (I more prefer Lana's original BJ video though). I just don't feel like there are any songs on UV that stand out so much (maybe Brooklyn Baby/West Coast/Old Money). I'm a fan of the string instruments in BTD too, but the guitars in UV were nice because I like those as well.

But since this question is about which album is better, I'd say UV. But the strength of the songs on BTD keep my answer to liking them both the same.

One thing I seem to disagree with the masses on is that I don't feel like UV is closer to her Lizzy Grant work, minus Florida Kilos maybe. UV sounds like she is growing more into the character (or whatever) of Lana Del Rey. She is slowing down and maturing up and neither of those words come to mind when I think of Lizzy Grant. Another thing that I don't agree with most people on is that UV is darker than BTD. I don't know why, but I feel like Born to Die is darker, I always imagine her voice floating coming to me from the dark. I could be just weird though.

thanks for posting this! i feel sometimes i am too critical a fan, and being trapped in the bubble that is lanaboards, i really easily lose of what an anomaly she actually is in the pop world and the unique talent and devotion to her artistry she truly possesses... i'm just too busy ragging on her for all the dumb shit that she says. and monicker was right about the discourse being great between the more dismissive/skeptical person and the supportive person. that was neato, i think i needed to hear these perspectives to remind me why it is i'm still a fan

    two things i especially liked
    1) the synthesizer is a homage to dre!
    2) there was this line was something like "lana's just not very good at explaining herself", which i think accounts for 95% of the things i give her shit for

here is the obligatory bear gif!

I feel as if Lana is a young woman who is still learning who she is, not only as an artist but as a person separate of that entity. I think that is why she contradicts herself sometimes. I think she has an idea of who she is, but there is still this sense of confusion and this need to come into her truth, as it relates to her self, more. She is at that age where there is still work to be done to truly claim one's identity.

I think Frances had the right to state her opinion regarding things she has perceived Lana has said about glamourizing death, but I do not think Lana meant any harm. Frances seems to have acknowledged that. She clearly did not attack Lana. She simply wanted to state her piece. Nothing wrong with that.
