not to bump a hella old thread or anything (even though i've already done that like five times lol) but i didn't see anyone mention this so far:
i think the origin of the title, besides the "too-boring original title" story, is from the old movie "faster pussycat! kill kill!" with Tura Satana. it's right up lana's alley, here's a short plot summary:
"Three wild, uninhibited go-go dancers—Billie, Rosie, and Varla, dance at a club before racing their sports cars across the California desert. They play a high-speed game of chicken on the salt flats and encounter a young couple, Tommy and Linda, out to run a time trial. After breaking Tommy's neck in a fight, Varla kidnaps and drugs Linda.
In a small desert town, they stop at a gas station where they see a wheelchair-bound old man and his muscular, dim-witted son. The gas station attendant tells the women that the old man was crippled in a railway accident, “going nuts" as a result, and that he received a large settlement of money that is hidden somewhere around his decrepit house in the desert. Intrigued, Varla hatches a scheme to rob the old man, and the three women follow him back to the ranch, with their captive in tow."
there's a couple more paragraphs on the wikipedia but you don't need it all, but isn't that just so lana?? go-go dancers, racing cars in the desert, bad sexy women, gas stations, robberies, etc... really makes a lot of her lyrics in other songs fall into place too. of course, lots of movies from this era (1965) have very, very similar themes, so i'm sure this is far from the only piece of media that influenced her around this time, but yeah.

random but i've always heard specifically in the first verse "and if you ask again, i'll say 'um, sure!'" idk it's just so lana to me and she stops singing and says it in a cutesy like conversational tone so that's how i always heard it

sorry if people have said this before (i've gone through this whole thread, read every post lmao it was the reason i joined but i could have missed something cause i smoke weed a lot lmao) but i always figured High By The Beach was about fame. "boy, look at you lookin' at me/i know you don't understand [...] now you're just another one of my problems, because you got out of hand" like she realizes the media/GP doesnt "get" her and she's said a few times that all she wanted was to be like, a poet, so i feel like HBTB was written out of a place of frustration when she was feeling like the fame she wanted before is just causing problems for her now.
and "the truth is i never bought into your bullshit when you would pay tribute to me" like she never really believed the music journalists when they fawn over her now because they all shit on her before and she knows that it's all so fickle and people will just repeat whatever pitchfork (or whoever) says. like "oh sure y'all like me now and pretend you always did but i remember when i was a literal laughingstock"
it's one of those songs she's got where she's talking to a man but it's very obvious, at least to me, that it's one of her relationship-as-metaphor songs, it's more obvious than others hahah but hey that's just my two cents

i don't think a single person has mentioned pin up galore yet (may have missed it) but it's always gonna be not only my favorite unreleased lana track but my favorite lana song, period. it's just... so perfectly evocative. the recording i prefer is the live one, or at least i think that's what it is because it sounds like she's in a room with the band at the same time but... i don't know. it's just sexy, melancholy, wistful, and brooding all at once yet it's not so brooding that it loses its fun.
i actually plan on getting a tattoo of a retro-style teal green trailer with christmas lights on it because of that song. i hope she'd approve.

Totally agree!
This theme of 'the burden of fame' is also there in Cherry, 13 Beaches, and she even wrote a haiku about it for her poetry book:
“Jasmine in the air
the burden of fame is real
never felt so clear.”
