I don't have time right now to read the whole thing but i really like this piece so far. I like how they pick apart her influences and what devices she uses and it makes me happy to see since it's sort of rare to find people give lana the time of day for that sort of stuff. I also agree with the point about a lot of lines, specifically the "they say i come from money but i didn't" are too self indulgent. It's one of my biggest problems with violet. Poetry is inheriently self-centred, but what makes allen ginsberg and walt whitman good poets is how universal the language begins to feel. Lines like "people always accuse me of being rich but im not i swear!!" and "im funny when i drink (btw i swear ive been sober for 7 years)" are just plain uninteresting at best. They might be good topics for her to continue further on and delve into, but when she just puts lines in it like that it ruins the flow and makes violet harder to enjoy

What are your favourite literary quotes of all time?
genghis khan replied to Mer's topic in Literature
Not necessarily a favourite of mine, but it made me understand why Lana might see herself in Sylvia “Being born a woman is my awful tragedy. From the moment I was conceived I was doomed to sprout breasts and ovaries rather than penis and scrotum; to have my whole circle of action, thought and feeling rigidly circumscribed by my inescapable feminity. Yes, my consuming desire to mingle with road crews, sailors and soldiers, bar room regulars--to be a part of a scene, anonymous, listening, recording--all is spoiled by the fact that I am a girl, a female always in danger of assault and battery. My consuming interest in men and their lives is often misconstrued as a desire to seduce them, or as an invitation to intimacy. Yet, God, I want to talk to everybody I can as deeply as I can. I want to be able to sleep in an open field, to travel west, to walk freely at night...” ― Sylvia Plath, The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath -

the song?? you're still alive?

yeah it's catchy. i like it more than what she was doing on k-12, literally just going through a list of different social issues to bring up because usually when people do that it's just surface level and uninteresting commentery ( it reminds me of this old canadian show called degrassi where every episode just had to bring up another social issue for the sake of it)

Can BTS stop with dynamite. i am so god damn tired of hearing this song. they're pulling a justin bieber yummy and are uploading a bunch of slightly different music videos to get more streams on the song, and like 15 different remixes of it. i haven't even heard of any news of an album, so it's not like they're promoting an album

im slowly becoming obsessed with her

a lot of her songs are really emotionally effective. before getting into her it was easy to assume that her music would just be another kid making lazy "edgy" lyrics but I actually found myself invested in what she was singing in

I know Billie Eilish has stated lana del rey to be one of her biggest inspirations but they are completely different and constantly seeing comments on how lana "invented" her is annoying. the only thing they have in common is that they sing about sad things, but i can name you a billion other artists who do the same billies music, in terms of both sound and lyrics, are extremely simple but they're effective. Lana is known for her work that is extremely grandiose and prose-y. completely different. they're even sort of opposites. I'm now realizing that i already posted something just like this on this thread already. but the reason it's coming back to me again is cause i've finally decided to look into billies music and it really does stand out

the song isn't that interesting. it's just the music video that really makes it
