I'm loving Portals, but I'm really struggling with the mixing. Am I crazy, or are Melanie's vocals absolutely buried in many areas? The instrumentation sounds flat in random spots and her vocals feel as if they're in a different room at times. It's like things have been fed through a treble reduction EQ, the soundstage is spotty, and some songs still feel like they're in an unmixed demo state. I believe this is most apparent on Evil, although the chorus brings some life into things. It's strange, because the songs aren't consistently flat across the album.
 
I wouldn't consider myself a full-on audiophile, but perhaps I'm more particular about this. I don't recall a recent release that I've encountered this to such a strong degree. It's a shame, as I feel like with the proper mixing, the album would truly be brought to life.
 
I've seen a couple comments noting similar observations. Is this a widespread feeling?

Melanie Martinez is one of those VERY FEW cases where I would like the artist to listen to the label a little more 

Im sorry but y’all acting like this album is really uptempo… like there’s anything wrong with slow songs! I personally love them (if done right). Lana does it all the time and she nails it!
 
but let’s admit there is no Pity Party, Cake, Soap, Carrousel or Pacify Her in this album 
 
having more than a guitar as an instrument don’t make them any less slow 

everyone is entitled to their own opinion (obviously) but we are the ones streaming, buying and posting about the music she releases... so it's strange to say it's not for us at all. as a fan i'm gonna say it's not her best work but let's hope she proves me wrong when the album actually comes out :-)

I mean… Maybe unpopular opinion but Drama Club, Lunchbox Friends, Show & Tell, Nurses Office and maybe Detention eat up anything in the album for the exception of Tunnel Vision of course! 
 
y’all will kill me! I know the lyrics in K-12 are horrible but at least those instrumentals slap hard! This album doesn’t have upbeat songs except the previously mentioned. Also the concept here is all over the place while in K-12 at least you could tell the vision she had! Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the Medieval fantasy fairy aesthetic, but then she throws songs like BOTL or Light Shower that make 0 sense with the concept and throw me off big time. The leaks were a lot more cohesive… she should have sticked with it (even if it leaked the GP wouldn’t care) 
 
And don’t get me started on the costume thing… but that’s another thing
 
the only one in Portals I see myself coming back to bop a little is TV… maybe time will tell otherwise but for now… it’s like that 

However!!! If I take in consideration the leaks and the album I’ll make with them (including bops like Garden, Dragons Blood, Barely Juice and N&T) it’s far superior to anything since Crybaby…
 
as for now, the “official” album doesn’t have me hyped 

k-12 as a whole is better than portals tho 

death and void are both equally bad. i'm not sure what she's going for with this era but it's really not it 
 
!! i'm very much aware artists can grow and change, i was honestly super excited for this album. I just genuinely think that people are eating the new singles up so much solely because it's melanie and not because it's good music. 

her singing is so off to me in the first 2 singles  like something is very very wrong with her vocals but i can’t put my finger on it
