Lorde is a publicity hound. She loves being in the spotlight
Yet she only had one album where all during the run-up to it, she name dropped Lana a million and one times then after she made it, seemed never to mention her again
(used her then tossed her out like most people in Lana's life), Lorde just fired her management and is dating one person after another in the public eye ala Taylor Swift.
The comparison is what??? No one will remember Lorde a few years from now. So she is using her Andy Warhol 15 minutes of fame as long as possible.
When she sings a song about Royals and then has a hit, much like the Clash found, whining about not having becomes hard to do when the public knows they know have. That is the problem
Lorde has. Also, she is not unique so there is nothing overly special about her. She acts like she is a younger Lindsay Lohan.

Leave them wanting more, the most successful entertainment slogan ever.

as for the comment on Stevie Nicks- money is relative to someone like Stevie Nicks or Elton John when one lives expensive one needs more money than the average person.
They say Elton spends $50 grand a month on flowers. More than most people make in a year. His prerogative to do so, So in his older age he is still touring all the time in arenas
and will do so even when cutting back, and he has hundreds of songs he wrote that royalties come in.
Mike Nesmith of the Monkees always refused to do a long time reunion with the others because he was rich off his mother's invention of wite-out. Mom died, times changed, no one needs
wite-out anymore and after Davy Jones died, Mike immediately re-upped with the Monkees and now does autograph signings to rake in the bucks. Where was Mike when Davy was alive, and Mickey and Peter could have used the big money for a real reunion? (Nothing wrong with money, but it's all relative to the individual.) imho

    strangeweather-
no I disagree. It means she cannot put into words how she is feeling that, she feels it so much.
It is clever and unique way to write and I put it in the same (oh no he is going to go back to the 60s for a reference here)
with Petula Clark's Charlie Chaplin written "My song"
where Chaplin wrote the phrase in a way that most would have written different

"I care not what the world may say, without you there is no day"

that wording anyone else would have written, I don't care what anyone may say, but it is so beautiful romantic written "I care not what the world may say"

Lana is saying that in "I don't really know what I'm saying" in saying it such a feeling that words cannot describe. It is poetic. It is beauty itself. It is love. It is timeless love

    at least in my opinion.
(note- Petula Clark was always my favorite female singer prior to Lana, and its been 50 years now, though Pet never wrote nor had anything to do with the arrangements or producing of her own records, just singing.)

    LOL

    but it makes perfect sense

that quote and the one in Ride in the bridge it is as if she is singing my life.

    it's hard to explain.

I guess you gotta be there.
I have listened to American in repeat once for 2 hours.

(and the music double entendre references (house, Crystal Meth, Bruce, Elvis (and it could be either Costello or Presley as both fit)

not to mention it isn't but it could be in a corny sort of way about President Obama if one wants to make it about President Obama (and its how I feel about him).

no problem if no one agrees with me, it's my personal opinion.
  4. writtenxrabbits liked a post in a topic by graham4anything in What has Lana done for you and how has she changed you?
As probably one of the older people here (horrible thought, I used to be all of your ages),
I was aware and into Lana as Lizzy early on. (and this is going to have a few separate parts to it)

However, in 2011-2012 had a major health problem ended up in hospital for 5 days (though no procedure was done).
Doctor called it almost like a parent does- he gave me a time-out to reevaluate my daily intake of food and real soda. (In essence a cheese and coke addict (coke=cola)
Not to mention it had been more than a decade of not going to the doc to begin with.
While there with my computer completely listening to Lana/lizzy wall to wall and from major fan it turned to major inspiration.

In reality, Lana saved my life. Sounds corny, family members think it is bull, however, it is true.
She brought me through and afterwards as I continued to rehab my lifestyle, and for the first time in years began an exercise program where I swim (now at least an hour a day).
And I swam to her in perfect timing (Lana's beats per minute coincide with my hands slapping down into the water (Salvatore is the latest, but I do a perfect sync to Video Games
and Pawn shop blues for instance.

Lana is for those in some ways bullied, flawed, injured, in a way that is not describable and that I never felt before.

A little background for the other thing-
I am someone who was around throughout the 60s and music and politics was my life's fun. (WABC top 40 radio, Cousin Brucie and Dan Ingram DJs) where in the summers in NYC at the beach
just about every one of what seemed like millions of beach goers in Coney Island and Riis Park had their transistor radios all tuned together, so if one walked from the beach to the shack to buy a coke in a green bottle on a day when the sand burned the feet and it was feeling like 100degrees (f).  (WABC continued into the early 1980s before become a shitty conservative talk radio I wouldn't be caught dead listening to).
From actually being there when the English invasion began, Roy Orbison in real time, Sinatra with his 60s hits (That's life, Something Stupid, My Way, NY NY)
and seeing Elvis Presley live in concert (and to this day his later 60s/70s songs are my favorite as I heard them live time real time as they were happening)
Seeing Duke Ellington live in concert, Simon & Garfunkel live in Forest Hills stadium in their prime. Saw Nina Simone and Aretha and Ray Charles
then going to the earliest days of Elton John and Bernie Taupin (1969 onward)
From the mid70s discovered country music and went backward to the 1940s,1950s,1960s legendary artists saw Johnny Cash many times.
(Went to see the Highwaymen and the first time I wondered, why is Johnny there. The second time I saw them, I already realized Johnny is the important part of the group, without him, there wouldn't have been the others)
and first discovering Edith Piaf and Marlene Dietrich and Aznavour and Brel and bing Crosby (saw him live in NYC and saw him light the City Hall Christmas Tree and singing White Christmas)
Then punk and new wave (Saw many acts at CBGBs and Max's Kansas City, saw Lou Reed many times
Then continuing to Kate Bush and the Pet Shop Boys. (while continuing with Elton)
and then, music started to suck big time. Sure there was a single or two that was great, but nothing that made me want to discover everything and anything about an artist

and I was sure there never would be.

My favorite songs of all time are and have been consistent over the years
from the first time I heard them (and both were #1 and #2 the same week)
1968's MacArthur Park by Richard Harris & This Guy in Love by Herb Albert
#3 The Boxer- Simon and Garfunkel 1969
#4 Whiter Shade of Pale- Gary Brooker's vocal as Procol Harum 1968
#5 Elton John's Someone saved my life 1975

Until I heard Elizabeth Grant sing and her songs, and it made me think-
If I myself would put together the perfect musical act, with a spoonful of all the artists in the past, Lana would be the one.
    It is uncanny.

Now, if I made up my all time Top 100, at least 40 songs would be Lana's. After decades of the list never changing.

anyhow...again, Elizabeth Grant saved my life. And I thank her for doing just that.
What an inspiration and what a perfect person for the age when bullying and abuse is heard in the news almost daily.

and as I keep saying, Lana has transcended above every single female artist, writing lyrics as poetry and the music too, and producing, and the sounds and music are akin to Brian Wilson "Smile"
or the Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's". (and the Beatles were 4 people, 2 main songwriters (John and Paul) and George Martin producing.
or Elton's Goodbye Yellowbrick Road or Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (and Elton only does the music and doesn't produce, and Bernie writes the lyrics)
And how important it is- she PRODUCED every song on the Honeymoon album. She is one of the boys in the highest parts of music.
And I don't give a shit if nobody else here agrees with me. A complete artiste in a world filled with cookie cutter copies. One Lana/Elizabeth.
Others attempt to copy, attempt her style, but one hears a Lana song and it's a Lana song.

Like eating a slice of pizza or a bagel outside of New York City and they call it NY Style. But it ain't New York Original.

note- I might edit this, but for now

This Lana supporter thinks Shades of Cool old man Mark Mahoney is cool, and it sure resonated with me.

let's just say you and that other one should live happily ever after, but please, go do it on an artist you actually like board. Because not one post indicates you ever knew what Lana was about in the first place.

Perhaps Cedric G. will remix one of those other artists and you will get a disco album from one of them (Maybe Martika?). No one ever heard of Cedric G. either prior to his piggybacking off of Lana did they?
And note, not once in concert did Lana ever do the remix version.

Lana could snap her fingers show up in Europe and instantly do a full series of soldout concerts at any time any year in the future, be it 2015 or 2035..

Here is a trick question- when was the last concert Kate Bush did in Nashville Tennessee or Houston Texas or New York City or Los Angeles? (note, it is a trick question).
Bet Kate would have died to have 4 Top 10 lps in America. Or even one radio song.

Keep doing just what you are doing Lana...remember "Illegitimi non carborundum" .  Never be anything you are not. Be everything you are.

and here's to Mark Mahoney. From East Coast to West Coast.

"Kiss me hard before you go, Summertime Sadness" that opens "Summertime Sadness" "I would wait a mill-i-yon years" from Blue Jeans The beginning of BTD title track and how the strings swell during the chorus "Come take a walk on the wild side" as she goes into her higher register in BTD The chorus in "Off to the Races" in her uber-girly voice The chorus in "Lucky Ones" in her New York-ish accent
All of Ride is a magnificent musical moment - should have won the Ivor Novello award that year, but especially the climax when she sings:
I 'm tired of feeling like I'm fucking crazy I'm tired of driving 'til I see stars in my eyes It's all I've got to keep myself sane, baby So I just ride, I just ride
"In the Lands of Gods and Monsters I was an angel looking to get fucked Hard" - holy hell Lana The delicate, lilting verses on "Bel Air" The opening of Cruel World, it's just stuck in my head all the time "We both know it's not fashionable to love me...." - oh Lana That moment in "Terence Loves You" when she quotes Bowie

Lana has taken this song, that was written specifc for (but not by) Nina Simone, and was a hit for the Animals and Santa Esemeralda

somewhat taking the first two versions, and making the song her own.

He phrasing and her meaning is specific to her.

She is directly describing herself in these lyrics.

And it is alternatively heart breaking but redeeming, and affirmative, and asking those who are listening not to listen to any negativity and keep moving wherever she takes us

Which is pretty cool if you ask me.

Every song released both as LDR and any other name, and the demo's too.

There is no filler. No bad song. No song that doesn't fit in each album. (and the bonus songs too, however, they didn't always fit the subject matter which is why they were bonus songs)

100% and I can't say I ever heard anyone else come close to half of that.

Most artists have 2 or 3 songs, and the rest is filler. (20 or 30% only

And not putting other artists down, but as examples-
Christina Perri- after she finally made it in 2010-11, I loved her big single, Jar of hearts (however, gonna catch a cold is a bad lyric there, maybe the flu or pneumonia made more sense), and then a few other songs.

But in a way it was like Joan Osborne (Joan's "If god was one of us" was an amazing song, however, the other songs on the album had nothing to do in style or anything with that one, that proved If God
was an outlier and not what she was. Unfortunately, I myself did not relate to the the other songs.
Same with Sarah McLaughlan and Fiona Apple and others. A handful of songs, played in rotation with other artists. (Many of the Lilith artists the same, one great song, some others good).

Same with those mega single artists like Mariah, (who literally slept with the head of Columbia to get hits and those hits stopped when he divorced her), Celine, Whitney- the numbers sold went down
as time went on, and the quality went down.

The artistic output I have never seen in volume and consistency.

.and may I say again, millions of other artists would die to have their lifetime sales be as many as Honeymoon's first week sales. So would everyone who hit #3 to infinity down the chart. They would have died for a #2 placement.

as for her record company- her deal allows her outside projects, they take her for what she is, and she is a core artist that record companies like to brag having on their label.
Every sale is going to someone who actively purchased it and wanted it.
It is not like in the 1980s,1990s, artists shipped a million albums and six months later the stores returned 950,000 of them. (back then shipped got one gold record, now it takes actual sales).

and Lana doesn't need money. That makes her free not to need to attain it.

And Lana's record deal allows her outside projects so we the supporters get more music from her. Another label might not have let her do the movie scores as they came up.
    Or the duets.

I can't wait until next year and the year after and the year after that. Just when one thinks she cannot release something as good, the next song comes out and it is.
And I don't care if a negative person does not agree with me.(those people can put me on ignore if they choose).

And traveling with a record player answers the question of where does she play the lps she travels with LOL

Would love to know if she will be part of Maleficent 2 that was just talked about. This time with an original song perhaps so it is Oscar eligible.

Lana is one of a kind. Her beautiful music, unique voice and friendly personality stands out in todays music world. She has a legacy of fantastic songs.
To stand close to her at a concert is a memory for life, something that I will always remember. There are many many artists with "bops". I like them too.
But Lana's songs has a special place in my heart no matter how many album she sells. I feel pity for the ones who will never step inside her fantastic
fantasy world. The question you have to ask yourselves is: do you like her music If not what are you doing here?!

no I disagree.

Here is what will probably be an unpopular opinion-

From the BBC interview/ three songs she just did, there is a quick line in it about how her agreement with the record company gives he time to record often. (YEAH!!!

I 100% want Lana to release a new album every 15 months or sooner, and perhaps a new song uploaded to her personal youtube every single month of the year (maybe every three weeks.
    I want music, music, music
and every year a short tour if SHE WANTS to do it.

But I don't care if she doesn't do promo, if she doesn't do American tv shows , USA interviewers ask such stupid questions to start off with.
(and the one from the week before the BBC one, in France I think it was, the guy didn't know she did movie themes. )

I feel to have to say that Lana songs make me feel less alone. Thank you Lana.

OMG Paradixo, American is not only one of my favorites, it has one of the five most important Lana direct meaning quotes in it-

    EVERYBODY WANTS TO GO FAST
    BUT THEY DON'T COMPARE
I DON'T REALLY WANT THE REST
ONLY YOU CAN TAKE ME THERE
    I DON'T REALLY KNOW WHAT I'M SAYING
    BUT I'M PRAYING...

after hearing Sam Smith's just released last night Bond song, well, 24 hours or Big Eyes would have been more Bond

Sam's song is interesting, however, it is like a copy of Elton John's masterpiece "Tonight" (if only had he hit that last note in the very end that he fumbled).
Sam will have a #1 song though, the way the industry is.

Just think, a piano player and singer, makes me wonder why they never asked Elton to sing a Bond song. (Maybe it was a record label thing, and Elton wouldn't have been allowed to record it).

then again, I would rather Lana play Bond Jamie Bond in the next James Bond.

If I were the Bond people, I would have gone for a duet of both of them. Being that Sam is so Lana to begin with
(Remember when he went on SNL stood still next to a piano and did exactly what Lana did on SNL yet the critics loved him and hater her???
