You’re right, i spoke too soon. I should have known that Lana Del Rey fans who, like, once watched a video on YouTube about Rihanna with the word Illuminati in the title, or heard something about something from someone who knows someone, would be well informed on various secret 16th Century Bavarian organizations.

Hey, maybe litewave will come into this thread and shut me up with the ultimate analysis of Lana Del Rey, which ties her to a rich lineage of Bavarian esotericists.

Lots of Masons were Catholics, by the way. A lot of that stuff was just white men getting together to drink and be assholes.
  2. delreyfreak liked a post in a topic by Monicker in The Paradise and the esoteric origin of mankind
Yeah, that's what i took it to mean, too.

By the way, i didn't intend to deny any biological differences between the sexes, if this how it came across. I'm not Judith Butler

I know. What i was questioning is the idea that certain attributes (eg. integrative/separatist) are inherently "masculine" or "feminine."

Using "her" would be the pendulum swinging all the way in the other direction, no? I think that's a misconception to attribute something like that to "super feminist" (whatever that term even means). Nothing to do with Affirmative Action either. If you were talking about, say, Asian people in an all inclusive way, to represent the whole of the continent, you wouldn't keep referring to them as Chinese, would you? I didn't realize using "him/her" or "their" when speaking of all people could be awkward. It goes beyond just being gender-sensitive.

Does this have to do with the double slit experiment with photons?

I can agree with that to an extent even though i'm very wary of binaries, especially as absolutes, or absolutes of any kind, really. We're on the same page with the piano analogy, but not for the same reason that i imagined was your intent in making the analogy: the piano and its black & white keys are a human construction--not rooted in a natural phenomenon--much like the social construct of reducing being down to these polarizing masculine/feminine "fundamentals." BTW, the harpsichord and some fortepianos, which both predate the pianoforte, have the black/white key scheme inverted.

What i was referring to is bolded in the following:

Also, a lot of this soul/ego duality is sexist and too reductionist and essentialist. Why should these ontological attributes have to be tied to gender? Does that have any real value? Is it not dismissive of our complexities and ambiguities? I mean, integrative = feminine and separatist = masculine? I find that rather insulting. What do those qualities really have to do with the socially constructed ways in which men and women have been segregated throughout history? And what about those who don't fit into a gender binary? I just don't get why this stuff has to be described in terms of a male/female dichotomy.

P.S. I do enjoy reading your posts, so i hope you don't take any of this "the wrong way."

I see a lot of the traps of binary thinking (ontology is more complex than a set of binaries, no?) in these interpretations, along with complementarianism, social constructs passing off as "truths," dogma and moralism. Also, don't you think we should be moving away from the kind of language that uses he/him/his to represent all peoples?

I cannot fathom how anyone cannot like bangs, and what in the world is wrong when they split down the middle, and are you serious, Britney Spears? Britney Spears is now somehow synonymous with bangs? What? More like Lizzy's lookin' pretty French New Wave these days.

Evil, TPD, Sam Gho, et al. are probably on the right track regarding the Alabama sojourn, but i had a passing thought and just wanted to throw out another possibility just for the hell of it. It's the sort of little detail that often gets overlooked because it's either so obvious or just plain silly: Could it be that she listed Alabama...don't laugh...as a state of mind of sorts? What i mean is maybe it was just a fantasy she had, perhaps she romanticized the south, and she wanted to make her own narrative more appealing, so she fancied herself living in Alabama to give her persona a certain image, to add to this character/art project she was creating. God knows how many false locations i listed on my MySpace music profile throughout the years...

Is Alabama mentioned anywhere else in relation to her past, or did the Alabama talk all come from MySpace? I guess i should have asked that question first. Disregard this if it sounds stupid and implausible. Admittedly, i know little about this sort of stuff.

Isn't it weird to think that we're planning ahead on how we're going to systematically express emotions and reactions through tiny pictures of other people?

PrettyBaby, you apparently are losing your mind, sorry. It’s okay though, you can go ahead and commit yourself to the asylum that is now taking patients who dislike I Sing The Body Electric.

It’s Cherry Coke and sweet serial killer. Though to your credit it really does sound like it’s a real killer if you tell yourself that’s what it is as you listen to the line. It's hard to decipher the line because she pronounces serial oddly (for rhythmic purposes) by placing the accent on the middle syllable, RI, rather than the customary first syllable, SE, so it sounds awkward, hence the confusion. However, the giveaway is that the first sound of the line is undeniably an S sound. That's what makes it certain. Also, the fact that she indisputably says sweet serial killer very clearly in the other section of the song adds to the likelihood that that is indeed what she is singing previously, no?

Ugh, some of the Auto-Tune in this song. WHY? That goddamn software should never go anywhere near her ever again. It’s so incredibly unnecessary.

Are you sure you're not hearing a k sound from the huge reverb of the handclaps? I have never heard anything other than P-P-Pepsi, studio or live. We've been over this

Lyrically speaking, i've always thought of Lana Del Rey, first and foremost, as a storyteller. Not, say, in the sense of Tom Waits, whose lyrics read more like short stories, and one doesn't ever really wonder if he's singing about people, places, and situations from his own life. I think with Lana it's a lot more apparent that her subject matter is drawn from her life, but it's always puzzled me that so many people take every word completely as autobiographical truth. Almost as if that gives the lyrics more value somehow. I suspect she embellishes quite a bit, and i don't find anything "wrong" with that, nor does it make her and her songs less interesting or valid. I think that, as is the case with most everything, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. That said, when it comes to Lana Del Rey, i'm not terribly interested in the truth and details of her past and personal life. I'm just a music d00d at the end of the day.

You know, i’ve thought before about how funny/weird/surreal/awkward/absurd it would be for all of us to be together in a room somewhere, like a huge ornate ballroom, and everyone is just standing around and we’re all looking at each other and we’re all hearing each others’ voices for the first time and realizing that no one sounds as you had imagined them sounding, one person, it turns out, is a she and not a he, someone else is way younger or older than you had assumed, someone is inevitably nothing like their online persona, and there are like five people you want to have sex with. I would definitely show up for the Halloween gig in my BDSM mask and every time i opened my mouth i’d ramble in ten minute blocks. Just imagine the scenario and all the stuff that would go down: Riley would be MCing the event with his reydio voice, evilentity would be handing out our English assignments, Madrigal would be going around yelling at us that our dates are all wrong, HDB would be going around liking everyone’s comments, SitarHero would finally get the chance to sport his Jimmy Gnecco shirt, showing it off like a drag queen, Lily would spearhead a mutiny, TPD would show us the contents of her big manilla envelope containing classified documents and photos related to Elizabeth W. Grant, PrettyBaby would act as the great arbiter and peacekeeper, Neal would deny that he’s FBI agent Dale Cooper, ednafrau would be begging the house band to do a Jeff Buckley cover, Hunter would be plugging his own music, Moy would be digging a bigger hole for himself after making poor analogies to try to prove that cultural appropriation is okay, Lemon Pie would just be sitting deliciously on a table, deathray would no doubt be crossing his arms, James Dean would be badgering us all for the Million Dollar Man video, Matt would tell us all how Carmen is the best song in existence and how his Biology homework sucks, European would unyieldingly protect his origins, Crystal Castles would be going on and on about Crystal Castles, Hellion would be late to the party and show up with Blanche sass, Luda would be asking everyone why they hate him, Baby V Alex would be brandishing large picket signs with pictures of nude gay men on them, Chloe would be telling us how leaks are wrong and how we should just listen to Ben Mawson while Ben would point out to her how many leaks have, in fact, come directly from him, all the while running away from an angry mob, the Auto-Tuned Loon would be an ASSHOLE shitting all over the place and making horrid sounds (that would cause HDB to swoon), and Maru would literally be flipping over every god damn table at this event while pontificating about the superiority of cats.

Oh wait, then PinupGirls would crash the party announcing how awesome black people are, frankee would be in the corner doing a painfully tragic dance to a Madonna song, futilely attempting to get everyone to watch, the bearded man from Blue Velvet would wow us all with his exquisite facial mane, Emile Haynie would try to add a Born To Die filter to the whole party, Calendar Girl would make her great return and enlighten us with tales of all the adventures she embarked on during her long absence, Ahmed would phone in from prison, and Lana Del Rey herself would tell us all to go fuck off. If i missed anyone, sorry ‘bout it.

I can't believe how much these hosts are fixated on the lyric. They're like twelve year old boys. I'll take this moment to say that the overwhelming majority of the reaction to Cola has been so juvenile and tiring. It reminds me of being in class, like in COLLEGE, and the professor says something, for example, about "the penal system" and people start giggling under their breath. Obviously she's more explicit in Cola than this example, but the reaction to it still feels like that same sort of shit. OH MY GOD, THIS WOMAN IS TALKING ABOUT HER VULVA...HA HA HA PEPSI REFERENCES...LET'S NEVER LET THIS GO.

So, whatever, now we know: it's something Barrie told her.

I suspect that the line "Everyone around me [...] just thought it was really weird" sums up a lot about reactions to her in general.

Anyway, on to more important things...what about that Cola a cappella demo she did on GarageBand?? When's THAT gonna leak?

    remaster ≠ rerecording ≠ remaster

I'm surprised that you, of all people, Bill, would perpetuate this.

The sequence and all of its individual components:

    -compose
-arrange (could be done by someone other than the writer and/or producer)
    -engineer (record)
-produce (although this happens simultaneously with the previous step, and sometimes with the next step as well)
-mix (sometimes there's a mix engineer outside of the session engineer)
-master (done by mastering engineer; seldom done by engineer of the recording)
-remaster (if need be, and typically done many years after the original mastering; also, if something was never mastered [as is the case with most demos] then it can't be remastered)

To (somewhat) answer the original question: I'd like to hear AKA and Paradise remixed. Also, a few parts of Paradise rerecorded, as well as a few changes being made to the arrangements. Never going to happen.

I’m happy that the topics that came up with the GQ shoot are still being discussed and have now spilled into another thread; it's important and it's nice to see it being discussed. I agree with whoever said that everyone should be a feminist. Why in the world not? What single good reason is there not to be?

Anyway...about the topic of this thread:

As some of you may remember, i really hate the National Anthem video.

I like the Blue Jeans video much more than the Born to Die video.

TIWMUG is my least favorite song on the record.

I have no interest in Damn You, it’s a weak song with bad production and i think it’s been singled out as such a coveted song because that’s what previews do--they whet the appetite and make anything more appealing. I think there's a need to fill in the gaps and a desire to grab hold of the dangling carrot. That song stinks.

I think Lana can be incredibly cheesy and i love it. I also enjoy all of her paradoxes. I actually love that she has terrible songs sitting right alongside amazing ones.

I often wonder if she’s mentally unstable. She seems a bit off.

I don't know if this is an unpopular view or not, but she's weird, genuinely weird. Not Lady Gaga/Marilyn Manson weird, which isn't weird in the slightest. That said, what the hell does it even mean to be weird anyway? But yeah, she's a weirdo.

There are a few interviews in which i cringe because she comes across pretty dumb. I think she plays that up though and uses that as a sort of tool to be evasive.

I wonder why people--if they’re interested in this sort of thing--almost never bring up her nose job and instead focus on her lips. Anyway, discussion about her lips and nose is boring.

    That's it for now.

P.S. ednafrau, it’s nice to see you again!

He was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's, yes. But you'd be surprised, Sitar. Don't underestimate people's drive and creative spirit. Here's a fascinating and inspiring note about one of my favorite composers, Alfred Schnittke:

And, let me tell you, his post-stroke compositions were heavy. Also, in the last year of his life, Beethoven had to press his ear against the piano to feel the sound of what he was playing because his hearing had gotten so poor, he could barely even hear. There's also world-renowned virtuoso percussionist Evelyn Glennie who is deaf. Not saying that Bobby will exhibit the same tenacity, but you never know. He's not dead yet.

On a completely unrelated note, i would love to see Maddy mowing the lawn, ha.
