  8. Dark But Just a Game, For Free, and Wild at Heart thanks!!!
  9. To be fair, I’d say the UV era was more of an “act” — the smoky-eyed psych rock goddess shtick is definitely moreso an outlier in her career than what she’s doing now. Go back to the beginning, and see that it all started with very unadorned, Joni-esque singer-songwriter material — whether she was tying beats to it in the BTD era or adding fuzzy guitars for UV, I think COTCC kind of represents where she’s always been drawn.
  10. As much as I'd love a full song like the bridge of DTWD, I also adore how it stands out in the song... like it's fairly gentle and steady, and then there's that amazing climb as it builds up to I WENT DOWN TO WOODSIDE ... and then you come back out on the other side, like you're exiting a tunnel or something. It's gorgeous
  11. well, now that I’ve listened, my ranking is pretty far from what I thought it’d be literally everything from Yosemite up is like... INCREDIBLE, and the only one I actually don’t like is BUS... but I’ll save the rest of my thoughts for the post-release thread 1. For Free 2. Wild at Heart 3. White Dress 4. Dark But Just a Game 5. Chemtrails Over the Country Club 6. Not All Who Wander Are Lost 7. Yosemite 8. Tulsa Jesus Freak 9. Dance Till We Die 10. Let Me Love You Like a Woman 11. Breaking Up Slowly
  12. literally ONE minute into my first listen of the album and White Dress is giving me CHILLS
  13. that’s a gorgeous cover @Lana De Los Reyes made for me years ago! I can send it your way when I’m not on mobile, if you want
  14. Liberally inspired by @Sitar, god of LDR organization and playlists, I decided to sort all of LDR's unreleased work into album-sized playlists based on era/producer/all that fun stuff, and attempted to use LDR-sanctioned album titles where I could (but not always). Only the Lizzy-era playlists are solidified for the moment, but here they are!: DISC 1: MY ONLY GOD - 2006/7 session and acoustic tracks. Very stripped-down, guitar-heavy, moody vibe. Cover swiped from @Skid Row Cherry Pie's sickening sig DISC 2: GOD BLESS AMERICA - My humble approximation of Mertens' AKA, with Mermaid Motel restored to iconic closing track. All Mertens studio work, with The Man I Love fan-edit to maximize the surf noir slayage DISC 3: TRUE BLUE - All 2008/9 self-recorded acoustics, plus laptop demos that were shared on Myspace. Worry you not about the rest of the laptop demos, they've got their own gig DISC 4: TROPICANA - Post-AKA studio tracks, 2008/9. Very flirty, very fun, very offbeat, with an earth-shatteringly gorgeous cover by @le garce that doesn't actually say Tropicana, but shh the vibe is immaculate Also, super conflicted on the order for the second half of this DISC 4A: DAYTONA METH - THE holy text; all 2007-9 laptop demos that didn't already appear elsewhere. Spooky, sexy, genius. I'm obsessed with this one, even if I'm once again struggling with ordering the second half Fucking incredible cover by @/blueribbontrailer on Instagram; don't know if they're here or not So, yeah! There's still 12 (!!!!) LDR-era unreleased albums to come, but I'm super proud of what's here, and really excited to share the 2010-present stuff
  15. okay, not to go wacko on this thread with a wordy, pretentious rant, but... i listened to my playlist of Lizzy laptop demos tonight and i am SO convinced that Lana's body of self-recorded demos is like... lowkey one of her best works and is kind of genius i've totally convinced myself that if Lizzy Grant had only recorded that handful of laptop demos between 2007-2009 and then vanished, leaving those behind as her only musical legacy, she'd be regarded rn as a visionary outsider artist. like there'd fully be some gorgeous archival release of all the demos with extensive liner notes on the mysterious and brilliant Lizzy Grant complete with scavenged webcam selfies and it would be completely justified, because holy shit... is there anything else that sounds quite like the laptop demos?? they're like simultaneously sweet and malevolent, lo-fi but complex, with all the legions of multi-tracked Lizzy voices singing in an angelic (satanic?) choir over borrowed beats, tapping nails, horror-movie synths, or sometimes, most impressively, nothing at all. the fact that she made tracks like Bentley some of the most chilling and breathtaking in her WHOLE CAREER and it's just her voice????? like, compare Maha Maha and Bollywood Hawaii -- there's something timid and reigned-in about her vocal delivery on Maha Maha that's totally gone on Bollywood Hawaii, and i have no doubt it's because she felt safe to have fun and experiment and do whatever the fuck she wanted musically in her laptop demos. they're the sound of an artist that's totally free, taking risks, doing what excites them, and in the process creating something absolutely unique. it just doesn't get talked about enough that she was a woman in her early 20's completely independently writing, recording, AND producing these insane, layered songs where she plays characters and tells stories and builds up this whole universe of connected lyrics and references, all on her MACBOOK so yeah i'm feeling a LOT of love for the laptop demos rn. why don't we go ahead and leak Diet Mtn Dew Baby, Star Lux, Beach Boys, Bikini Gold, and all the others so we can bask in the genius
  16. sounds amazing! I can swap the info out for a link to your site when it’s done tho
  17. it's probably my fave LDR fan creation ever missing the king @Lana De Los Reyes -- i mentioned offhandedly that an AKA trailer would've been so cool, and he came out with THAT masterpiece every single frame is so incredible and there's so many lil easter eggs and nods omg... plus THAT SOUND EDIT
  18. Thank you!!!!!!!!! The video section is up now -- I opted to just link to the Early Shows section for live videos because why reinvent the wheel after @evilentity catalogued them all really well, but the interviews, music vids, and fan videos are all here! If anyone can think of anything you'd like to see in the OP, lemme know! (@electra, are you planning on including a section for AKA-era collectibles on your site? If not, I might make one here, and mention the CDs + Keds + Blurt magazine and talk a lil about the vinyl bootlegs)
  19. THE OP IS FINALLY FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I decided to completely overhaul it -- I've done a write-up of AKA's history, included info on demos/outtakes, and inserted helpful links. A videos section is on the way I put quite a bit of time and work into this, so please check it out, and let me know if anything is missing/incorrect! Talking about AKA is one of my passions, so thanks y'all, for indulging me
  20. Right!!! I was so sure Kahne did them, but nope, looks like he just borrowed a lot from Mertens -- it's like he either completely scrapped Mertens' ideas (Mermaid Motel, Brite Lites) or totally built off of them (The Ocean, QOTGS). Still hoping there's more AKA tracks that Mertens tried out in studio sessions And omg yes the New Mexico section makes the song a million times better for me -- QOTGS is my least fave on AKA, but the acoustic and Mertens demos I can vibe with so much more
  21. Relistening to Mertens' demos for AKA, it's honestly pretty crazy how much of his material Kahne ran with production-wise for the final album -- some tracks, like Brite Lites and Mermaid Motel got TOTALLY reworked, but tracks like The Ocean and Queen are so close to the final. It's still pretty hard to believe that The Ocean is Mertens' work because of that, but Also, oh my god, when am I ever going to fix the OP for this thread
  22. I'm so obsessed with Be My Daddy, Lolita, I Talk to Jesus, and DMD -- they're all serving me Myspace graphics and I mean that as a HUGE compliment bc I'm so in love with that aesthetic I know that could sound like a read in the wrong hands but no I am litcherally obsessed they're so cute
  23. I've seen other forums that have a 'sort by most liked' option within threads, showing you the most popular posts first. If that could be implemented here, I think it would be really fun (and useful)! It'd be especially nice for pre-release threads and others that get really unwieldy and long, so you could look back and get 'highlights' without having to read a billion pages' worth.
  24. inb4 that makes its way onto the lists of Cry Baby outtakes
