it’s a suspended sentence, meaning she wont go to prison as long as she abides by her sentence conditions & she doesn't reoffend in that period. basically, as long as she is on good behaviour she will avoid jail

unreleased music is always such a weird moral thing because some stuff simply isn’t obtainable in an unethical way like Dark City supposedly just being on the studio backup data and someone had it and shared it but also

 

some artists would not be who they are without… the lore that unreleased music has created for them. Like Charli or Lana… and a part of me feels like they operate knowing that there’s a large chance of whatever they do will get leaked and so they curate songs that expand their lore and mythical world

maybe my understanding of how leaks happen is wrong, but I always thought they usually start with someone close to lana's circle just passing it down the line to more and more people until someone eventually releases it publicly; it's not like anyone is actually invading or taking from Lana, they're just receiving and giving in a chain reaction; if the first circle of people that the song is available to is smaller and securer like Taylor's, then the songs wouldn't be so easily passed; i do understand how there are some instances of actual stealing like phishing links or her laptop being stolen, but I'm pretty sure those are the minority of leaks, right?

i mean sure maybe occasionally some things leak very passively but if it’s not being hacked or stolen from Lana herself it’s being hacked or stolen from producers etc

from what i understand, the problem is that most of the time it isnt as ethical as that. they are stolen in ways including by hacking networks, hacking private accounts, coercing people working on the music, and as you say, phishing. the end point is that it is not their music to sell, period, no matter how it is obtained

that's how some stuff leaked, but some stuff was directly stolen from lana. back in 2012/2013, her laptop got "hacked" through a hotel wifi that wasn't secure. and then in 2022/2023 she had that infamous laptop theft from her truck along with the camera that had chunk's footage on it 

 

edit to add context, i believe that's how the untouchable 5 leaked and some others some years later, specifically the reddit leaks that happened around 2013/2014 or so. wayamaya was part of that, when the leaker claimed it was only the bottom of the barrel. we got a few leaks from them but they claimed to have much more but i don't know if we ever got all of what was included from that theft or not or what happened to that leaker.

Case in point: she was obsessed with the artist Upsahl and used to go into Upsahl’s Instagram livestreams to terrorize her by talking about her unreleased songs. It was actually psychotic behavior.

A certain person here did the same sort of 'in you face' thing to Lana a while back too, so we're not immune from it.

Incorrect, actually. Those songs leaked because Rick Nowels' personal website was not secure. He uploaded dozens of songs from various artists onto a server linked to his website, for his personal use, but it was not password protected. It wasn't linked directly on his site, but if you poked around in the source code a bit, you could easily find a link to the file-hosting area of the site. It was trivial to do; five minutes of work, if that. Once you were there, it was basically just a detailed list of downloadable files sorted by year. He eventually went in and did some individual password protection of files for only two artists: Lykke Li and Lana. The damage had already been done by the time that happened, though, as people had known about this security flaw for months prior and the files had been heavily spread.

 

With regard to the rest of your post, though, it's mostly correct, but it misses the context that her email accounts were compromised around the same time as the laptop hack and material from both circulated heavily. As far as I'm aware, we have the vast majority of what was found by the hackers from both of those sources and most of what's left is just barely distinct alternate versions and demos.

 

Edit: Also, the theft of her laptop in the 2020s hasn't resulted in any leaked material. It wasn't stolen to get any music files, but rather because it was left in a car and it had intrinsic value. We know for a fact that she was able to remotely wipe it, too.

yeah rick was a lil dvmb for leaving the files like that but i still wouldn't see that as a justification for taking those files and selling them if that happened in the same manner to another artist. i could lose something whilst i’m out and it would count as theft for someone to then appropriate it as their own, so i don’t see why exceptions are made for digital files or art
