The Weeknd

Recommended Posts

Still listening to the album but after Open Hearts it starts to feel like After Hours 2.0 and I don't like that at all. I still think that After Hours is one of his blandest works. So slow and repetitive.
It looks like I'll need to cut a lot of tracks to enjoy this album.

Can someone explain to me, why are the physical copies called first pressing? Because there will be changes in the future, or just a different cover art? I’m so confused. :deadbanana:

Hurry Up Tomorrow transitions into High For This

So the whole The Weeknd persona is in the loop forever. There’s a little break in transition though so it might mean Abel broke through this loop

The Abyss giving Don't Call Me Angel where the song is just whatever and then Lana's part is completely different way superior song. :toofloppy:

lol no way

Hold your heart/the abyss was one of the most anticipated songs, ever since he teased it in 2020, it’s absolutely gorgeous

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't sick of it

What is it with these DCMA comparisons?

Nothing about The Abyss sounds anything like DCMA.

Collectors like first pressings,

But in his case it’s a marketing gimmick because with modern albums people really don’t care about that.

That said future versions may be a 2-3 lp to contain the whole album.

Which physical sales from the current batch have funded…

Idk, I feel like this is way too bloated just like Taylor's Poets, so some songs starting with Opening Night never got a chance to shine. Will come back to some songs after a month or so.

Honestly looks like this album is the last chapter just for the symmetry of it making the second trilogy, cause I feel like the last time we saw The Weeknd character was After Hours and he died in that era. Dawn FM already felt different from everything previously released but the whole concept was about closing the chapter and entering something new, so perfect to put The Weeknd to the rest after it. But here we are 3 years later with an album that sounds 30% Dawn FM and 70% After Hours and brings almost nothing new to the table, yet it's branded as the final The Weeknd album.

I'm a stan and I'm sure it's going to be one of my most listened albums this year but I'm not the biggest fan of the concept for this era.

I think I'm getting too old to understand the weeknd's music

what's there to get? it's a trilogy of albums about death, afterlife, and hope for the afterlife and what comes and this album is the grand finale to both his career as the weeknd and the trilogy

I know, I just think I'm not that into his music ever since AH, it's cool that he has a vision and concept for his music though

I hate this obnoxious trilogy “closing the chapter for the weeknd” stuff like is it really that deep? Who cares about your name just make good music, it’s not a damn movie 😭

on niagara falls, he mentions "you're a shining star" which is referencing both his first album and the stargirl interlude i believe

I’m still on my first listen, on my way home now after work so I get to listen to the rest, but I’m kinda leaning towards your opinion. I think it sounds great but it’s not very different from the two previous albums, which might not be necessary considering how well they’ve done on charts (and sales? Haven’t checked that though). I can sense some trance influences but they’re minimal.

I also worry that I’ll obsess over this album for a couple of weeks and then forget it. :ohno:

Ima write down my opinions & ratings on the tracks as I listen to them :oic2:

Spoiler
  1. Wake Me Up (7.5/10) - It was a cool track, and set the tone for the rest of the album! It was dark and sinister, but had that groovy feeling; I added it
  2. Cry For Me (6.8/10) - It was an okay track, it confused me a little with every half verse the beat would pick up, idk how to feel, but the last chorus was groovy
  3. I Can't Fucking (Segue) - I like these tracks flowing into one another right now
  4. São Paulo/Until We're Skin & Bones (6/10) - I didn't care for it when I heard it the first time, and I still don't, but now I like the outro and how it flowed into the next track
  5. Baptized In Fear (8.5/10) - My favorite of the album SO FAR, I liked his flow on here, and the beat matched well with it! AND THE FLOWS ARE CRAZY I CAN'T TAKE IT; I added it
  6. Open Hearts (8/10) - Not my favorite, but an excellent track. It reminds me of Geometry Dash music I don't know why lol; I added it
  7. Opening Night (7.1/10) - It's a cute little vibe, nothing crazy or big, but I like it though; I added it
  8. Reflections Laughing (5.5/10) - I liked the vibe in the first minute of the song, but then it became lackluster to me as if the song needed something. The beat was fine, but I don't know what it is
  9. Enjoy The Show (4.5/10) - One of the first songs off the album, where this could've been cut in half. After Future's verse, it could've ended. Plus, this song didn't do it for me at all
  10. Given Up On Me (7.8/10) - I like this one, his flowy verse in part 1 was good, and the R&B vibe in part 2 was amazing; I added it
  11. I Can't Wait To Get There (7/10) - It was nice and groovy, I liked his verse and flow a lot, but I wouldn't add it. I feel like this song is a one-time listen or a song you could play at a chill party

I took a break to digest the album because it's mad long. Now I'm back to review that last 10 tracks!

Spoiler
  1. Timeless (7.5/10) - When I first listened to it when it came out, I didn't care for it, but now, I'm digging the beat and their verses a lot; I added it
  2. Niagara Falls (6/10) - It wasn't bad, but I don't care for it. I wish we go back to that sinister vibe we had at the beginning of the album, and it looks like we are with the transition
  3. Take Me Back To LA (8.5/10) - Another favorite of mine!! I like the sinister vibes in the songs, it's not dark, and it has an 80s alt-pop vibe to it, but I enjoyed it; I added it
  4. Big Sleep (6.5/10) - It was good, so far, the most experimental song of the album. It gave me Labrinth vibes with the production, his singing, and the effects used, but I wouldn't listen to this again (not because it's bad but it's one of those for the album yk)
  5. Give Me Mercy (8.6/10) - Another favorite of mine!! I like the groove and the cadence of his flow. I don't why but it reminds me of a '90s song. Not in the production or anything, but maybe his flow; I added it
  6. Drive (7/10) - I can't catch a vibe or beat. It's there but I can't catch it... It might be a skill issue for me but that's the only song so far where I need a second listen; I added it
  7. The Abyss (7.6/10) - Listening to it last night, I didn't care for anything but Lana's part, but now with the context of the album and the sinister vibe throughout it, I love this track even more. Lana gave vocals on it SO I BETTER NOT HERE HER HATERS TALKING ABT SHE CAN'T SING; I added it
  8. Red Terror (6.5/10) - I wished the intro production was throughout the song, but I like the song. I wouldn't add it, I don't relate to it in any way, and I'm not the person who has to relate to a song to like it, but something about this song feels personal to him
  9. Without a Warning (7/10) - I like it, I don't know why that's all I have to say but I just do; I added it
  10. Hurry Up Tomorrow (6/10) - It's fine for me, it's not a bad song whatsoever, but it talks about things that I don't deal with or have never done in the past, but I love the lyrics in this one. I've been paying attention to the lyrics in all these songs, but this one sticks out for me

FINAL THOUGHTS: I like this album a lot as an introduction to The Weeknd's discography. The songs were interesting and unique. Even though the songs were long (and was the album :biblio:) I didn't feel like any of the songs were long, besides Enjoy The Show. I'm not tempted to visit his past albums, but if he has more albums coming in the future under The Weeknd, or a different name, I'll definitely check them out. My top five is 1. Baptized In Fear, 2. Take Me Back To LA, 3. Give Me Mercy, 4. Open Hearts, 5. Wake Me Up. Lana's feature on The Abyss was good, it's top ten for me, but there's better songs with them out there. The songs I don't care for besides the instrumentals are Enjoy The Show, Reflections Laughing, & São Paulo. (And yes, this is my first time listening to him spare me)

i'm sure this "last album" thing is just a marketing gimmick, he might not even abandon the stage name tbh abel is probs just going through an identity crisis right now after realizing he can't keep milking 80s synths forever :whatever2:
