In the wake of a masterpiece called "Spring Breakers" - my favorite director in the business today, Sofia Coppola, has been teasing her new film with a similar girls-gone-bad theme called "The Bling Ring." The film is based on the infamous burglar bunch that robbed the homes of some of Hollywood's elite circa 2008-2009: Paris Hilton, Rachel Bilson, Lindsay Lohan, Orlando Bloom, Megan Fox, etc.

The most famous member of the sticky-fingered gang, Alexis Neiers - a legend and an inspiration to us all  - is being portrayed by Emma Watson.

The rest of the cast is comprised of newcomers, with the exceptions of Leslie Mann - who portrays Andrea Neiers and Taissa Farmiga, who is an actress in American Horror Story.

The film is based off of the iconic Vanity Fair article, "The Suspects Wore Louboutins", by Nancy Jo Sales (for all my fellow Pretty Wild fans, let's start chanting "$29 dollars" and "brown bebe shoes!"). If you really want to feed your Bling Ring fix, make sure to check out Nancy Jo Sales's novel "The Bling Ring" which comes out on May 21st.

Here's the official trailer, and most - if not all of the dialogue - is quoted verbatim from the actual Bling Ring members.

The film premiered at Cannes on Thursday to polarizing reviews, no stranger to Coppola, who received both applause and boos for her 2006 beauty "Marie Antoinette."

The film receives a limited release in New York and LA on June 14th, but a wide release on June 21st across America.

can't believe i haven't been in this post yet! scrolled through your list of films seen this year, op, glad to see someone else watches as many as i do :3

we've both seen a few of the same films for the first time this year. glad to see someone else had a pos opinion of the paperboy bc generally it gets ripped apart, i thought it was pretty great tho and a nice refreshing film among a lot of the shit that runs together being released. buffalo '66 is amazing. get the feeling you're maybe not a big ryan gosling fan, which would def find us on diff sides of the aisle, but glad we can agree kirsten was amazing in all good things... that film deserves a lot more attn than it did, and she deserves a lot more credit than she does.

the more i look at this list it's crazy how many movies we've both seen in common this year, and for the most part i agree with your ratings altho i use letterboxd and score 1-5 stars going off netflix's star ratings (1 being hated it, 5 being loved it). also love sofia coppola. still have to watch somewhere and marie antoinette but i think she's fantastic. ugh it makes me so happy to see other ppl passionate about film sorry for rambling on and on :3 i'd love to talk films/recs if you ever are interested so feel free to message me or something! we can compare notes lol i never get to do so irl

ps ita about caesar and cleopatra, one of my favorite vivien films. also the roman spring of mrs stone is great too and seems to get overlooked next to her more iconic roles. sorry again for all the text/being weird!

i did enjoy the paperboy, it was messy, but it wasn't awful. nicole kidman was great, like always.

on ryan gosling, I find him mediocre most of the time - exception is with lars and the real girl, but most other times I can't take him seriously at all. it baffles me as to why directors hand him serious roles; place beyond the pines for example - I couldn't take him robbing a bank seriously 4 a moment. he tried too hard to seem edgy and it backfired so bad imo, but most people said he was the best part - so maybe idk what a good performance is?

on the topic of kirsten dunst - i absolutely love her. she's one of my all-time favorite actresses, she's so talented and underrated: the virgin suicides, marie antoinette, all good things, melancholia; she's had such perfect performances yet no one really seems 2 give her the credit she deserves.

and on the topic of sofia coppola - she's my favorite director in the business today. it was watching "marie antoinette" that I had that revelation that I want to become a filmmaker. she does such a wonderful job conveying emotion in her films, and the scene in MA when kirsten says goodbye to all of her friends is just so heartbreaking. also, I think that the sequence near the end of the virgin suicides - when all the empty rooms of the house are shown - is one of the most haunting moments in cinema history. somewhere is a very lovely film also - the scene that stood out to me was Elle Fanning skating to gwen stefani's "cool" (almost forgot how great that song is, the movie prompted me 2 rediscover her discography)

& you're not weird at all, always looking for people to discuss movies with!! drop me a message sometime! would love to hear some of your favorite films/recs

i definitely don't think ryan is mediocre, but you are of course entitled to your opinion. i for one found his performance in the place beyond the pines to be great. i didn't think he was trying to be edgy, in fact i felt that he did a great job of providing depth to a character who superficially would probably not be expected to have any. luke was king of his little part of the world and became overwhelmed when the harsh realities of the external infiltrated that. i can see why you say that about the robbery scenes, what with how high his voice got and all that. i don't think we're supposed to be convinced by him as a criminal but rather simply a man quickly finding himself in over his head. how people who have seen that performance can say luke is driver 2.0 is beyond me. i happen to think he's quite versatile and has proven himself a fine actor. but again, different strokes.

we're totally on the same page about kirsten and sofia, on the other hand. i think kirsten always rises to the occasion and she does great work even in bad films (idk if you've seen bachelorette but i was only able to stomach it bc of her). so many people dislike her and it seems completely irrational to me, i think she's lovely. i agree with you on all counts re: sofia. i'm an aspiring screenwriter/director myself and the virgin suicides will definitely be in my on-set binder for aesthetic inspiration. if you haven't i would highly recommend watching the work of michelangelo antonioni. he was a direct inspiration for sofia when making lost in translation and he has been a favorite director of mine for some time now. his trilogy of films l'avventura, la notte, and l'eclisse are essentials, and i think you'll appreciate them as an admirer of sofia's work ^_^

i'm going to try and compile a list of my favorite films/films that influence me and i'll share it when i'm done - i've been meaning to do it for some time so this is a good push!

ps, i just changed my avatar when i came into this post and saw you linked the don jon trailer - i can't wait to see it!

new trailer for "ain't them bodies saints" with rooney mara and casey affleck

in other news, roman polanski (another favorite of mine) has debuted his new film "venus in fur" @ cannes today, to very good reviews! some critics are saying it's reminiscent of his early work.

some pics from the film:

so with today being the start of june, i thought it'd be fun 2 run through some of my most anticipated for the summer - consider this my mini 'summer movie guide' (click the title to see the trailer/clip):

1.

(June 14th limited release for LA/NY, June 21st nationwide release)

I wrote a long post about this earlier in the thread, but this remains my most anticipated for the summer. Sofia Coppola takes to adapting the incredibly fascinating Vanity Fair article "The Suspects Wore Louboutins" for her fifth feature. The story follows a group of Calabasas teens as they rob from the rich and famous: Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Rachel Bilson, Megan Fox, and others. They eventually get caught, but they soon find their fifteen minutes of fame. The Bling Ring is essentially the To Die For for the TMZ age.

Side note: I hope i'm not be the only one saddened by the soundtrack. Literally, for a film set in 2008-2009, it’s a soundtrack so 2010-'11. So many great songs Sofia could've picked from </3

Cast: Katie Chang, Israel Broussard, Emma Watson, Leslie Mann, Taissa Farmiga

2. The Canyons (August 9th limited release by IFC)

It has been compared to the cult-classic Valley of the Dolls, and instead of the beautiful Sharon Tate playing a drugged-up beauty, it has Lindsay Lohan. The Canyons, set in Los Angeles circa 2012, follows a young movie producer (porn star James Deen) who makes movies to keep his trust fund together, and his actress girlfriend (Lindsay Lohan) who tries hiding an affair with an actor from her past. Her attempts at hiding it don't work well, and soon her and her boyfriend find themselves lost in the youth, sex, and glamour of LA. The film is written by Bret Easton Ellis, who penned the novel that inspired the underrated 80's gem Less Than Zero, and the director at the helm of this controversial picture is Paul Schrader - whose writing credits include Scorsese's Taxi Driver and De Palma's Obsession.

Cast: Lindsay Lohan, James Deen, Gus Van Sant, Nolan Gerard Funk.

3.

(August 9th limited release)

Linda Lovelace is most known for her 1972 film Deep Throat - but Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman go beyond the porno that made her a legend. The film promises to tell the story of a fragile girl, influenced by her abusive husband and self-declared manager, who uses all means possible to make her comply to his demands. This film might not be the next Boogie Nights, but it still looks like one to check out.

Cast: Amanda Seyfried, Peter Sarsgaard, Sharon Stone, Adam Brody, Juno Temple.

4. The Spectacular Now (August 2nd limited release) - no trailer available yet

Premiering at Sundance to extremely positive reviews, even having one critic saying “John Hughes would be proud,” this upcoming comedy-drama will follow a “hard-partying high school senior” whose philosophy changes when he meets an unusual girl. The film won both Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller acting awards at Sundance.

Cast: Shailene Woodley, Miles Teller, Brie Larson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

5.

(May 24th limited release, expanding to more theaters June 14th)

The third in a lovely series consisting of: Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004) - Before Midnight is a romantic drama, once again directed by the wonderful Richard Lanklater. It follows the couple of Jesse and Celine once again, played by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. This film is one I really advise you don’t skip.

Cast: Ethan Hawke, Julie Deply.

6.

(Release August 16th)

Promising some beauty and romance a la Badlands, Ain’t Them Bodies Saints will tell the tale of an escaped outlaw, searching for his wife and daughter in the Texas hills. The film stars the wonderful Rooney Mara, and Casey Affleck too.

Cast: Rooney Mara, Ben Foster, Casey Affleck, Keith Carradine.

rejected by sundance, then by sxsw over "quality issues"

"The film is so languorous. It's an hour 30, and it seems like it's three hours long. I saw this as a pranky noirish thriller, but Schrader turned it into, well, a Schrader film." - ellis
