Venice Jesus Whore 4,471 Posted March 20, 2023 Final pre-DYKTTATUOB ranking NFR Ultraviolence Chemtrails AKA Honeymoon Born to Die Paradise Lust for Life Blue Banisters I feel weird ranking Chemtrails so high because I skip LMLYAW, Dance Till We Die, and For Free like 95% of the time and it’s only 11 tracks. I also recognize it’s not her strongest work overall, and I was actually disappointed in the album when it was released. However, I’ve been tracking my streams on last.fm for 5-6 years, and in only 2 years since COTCC’s release, it’s become my 3rd most listened to album, and it’s only like 20 streams behind NFR. And I’m still not really sick of it. It’s kinda of been my default go-to album for Lana over the past couple years. I also feel like Honeymoon should be higher because it’s such a strong, consistent, high quality body of work and the melodies are some of her strongest. But in reality, I just don’t listen to it that often, and usually when I do, it tends to slog for me a bit once we get to Salvatore/The Blackest Day/24/Swan Song/Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood, and I don’t usually end up finishing. By the way, AKA is a total unique, innovative gem and it makes me sad how underappreciated it is. To this day, I still haven’t heard anything that sounds even remotely close to it. It’s crazy impressive that she was able to make something so great, creative, and unique for her first official body of work. But then again, it still blows my mind how she progressed from Sirens to AKA in 2-4 years, and then Born to Die another 1-2 years later. The sheer amount of music she made in this period is insane too. I feel like I could have like 3 different rankings of her albums and they’d all feel right for their own reasons. I guess that just goes to show how strong her discography is. 4 Quote It’s not about having someone to love me anymore This is the experience of being an American whore

Björk, Kate, Joni…the first isn’t even close to what they end up achieving but she’s gonna be one of those artists where if you want to “get into her” you start from the beginning and follow the journey. Which is a special place to be! There’s a reason those songs still live on and resonate with people more than any other album- because it’s her most solid album writing wise- melodically and lyrically it’s unpretentious and imagery soaked, is the production in need of an update? Yes because the beats can sound tinny at times and the auto-loon is too much- reigning this in just a bit would make it still one of her best albums. On 3/18/2023 at 2:21 AM, baddisease said: 1. Sportscruiser 11,894 Posted March 23, 2023 BTD’s writing is very good but I wouldn’t call it her best. Her writing flourished from LFL forward (LFL included) in my opinion.

I agree with you- I think what makes this album so special is its impact on music and pop culture in general. she manages to combine story telling with beautiful string and piano arrangements paired next to hip hop influenced drum beats. this isn't new to any of us in the fandom but the reason it ranks so highly for me as well, and the reason i find myself coming back to it all the time, is because of how it makes me feel... i don't necessarily see it as her "best" work objectively, but it's rare an album builds a world so distinct and un-replicated
