Honeymoon - Post-Release Discussion Thread + Poll
HawaiianTropic replied to annedauphine's topic in Post-Release Threads
Nearly shat myself when I saw this advertisement pop up on a random blog post Just when I thought I'd seen the end of those annoying Christina Lucci gifs on every Lana Boards post I'm telling you, this girl is going to follow me for the rest of my life and there's nothing I can do about it -
Honeymoon - Post-Release Discussion Thread + Poll
HawaiianTropic replied to annedauphine's topic in Post-Release Threads
Not sure exactly where to post this, but I'll do it here since this seems to be the random discussion thread. So I am super interested in Psychology, particularly personality psychology, and it all just hit me how Lana has been acting since BTD and as of late and how it relates to psychology. I feel like Lana has been suffering from the Freudian defence mechanism of the ego known as regression, which is basically when a person returns to an earlier level of development or to a less demanding habit or situation, particularly when faced with difficulties. Well, I feel like this difficulty was the criticism and the harsh responses she got during the BTD era, with screams of inauthenticity and fakeness. Lana didn't like the way people reacted and so she has been regressing back to her old ways, back when she was just Lizzy Grant, and she could make music peacefully in her bedroom without having to worry about what the world thought of it and thought of her. I feel like her lack of promotion and willingness to be in the public eye at all relates to her bad experiences during the BTD era, and now she's been regressing to her old ways by just making the music for herself again and not trying to please the public like she clearly was with BTD by using heavy hip-hop beats and fast-tempo songs, which we've seen, really isn't Lana's usual style. One thing to note that the psychologist Sigmund Freud stated is that once people become aware of the existence of their defence mechanism (in this case regression), it often ceases to exist. I feel as if Lana has finally come to a realisation that she's been hiding away as of late. I can't make a judgment in terms of her music and whether or not she'll go back to her more adventurous stuff, but the way she's changed quite recently is certainly interesting. It's almost like a double regression, she noticed she'd been regressing to a state of hiding like her Lizzy days, so now she's regressing back to her BTD self, hanging out with Emile Haynie, posting more on social media, making so many more appearances lately, being back in the public eye, and even changing her entire look again to be reminiscent of BTD. I'm not saying she'll go back to her entire BTD sound/persona, in fact, I really doubt she'd do that, but maybe she's at a stage where she's more open to doing something a bit more adventurous and fresh and new, like she used to. Honeymoon was a fantastic record in its own right, and I love it because it feels like such a Lana record, but I think she's ready to try something new again, ready to move on from this short phase of covert hiding and simple music that takes no risks and will be perceived well because it's safe. Anyway, not sure if this made much sense, but I thought I'd post my ramblings regardless. -

I agree that Art Deco is one of the weaker bridges on HM, but it's still the highlight of the song overall for me. -

On the topic of bridges, I really think that Lana has some of the best bridges out of most of the artists I listen to. Her bridges are generally always the highlight of the song for me... Honeymoon, MTWBT, TLY, God Knows I Tried, High By The Beach, Art Deco and more... almost all of Honeymoon. And it's like this on most albums as well. Her bridges are always fantastic, unlike a lot of other artists who tend to just repeat another part of the song again. -
LANALYSIS: Relating Songs To Known/Assumed Relationships
HawaiianTropic replied to Sitar's topic in Lana Thoughts
Although I've never watched that film, judging by your comments it seems you may have figured it out, so great analysis! I've always seen Jump as a song about suicide. The music is relatively upbeat and there are clapping sounds yet the lyrics seem to reference suicide ("Do you wanna jump? jump? jump?") For me the song has always resembled the idea that depression and suicidal thoughts are very difficult to recognize in another person. The music sounds happy but if you look at the lyrics it's much darker than that. I feel like the song is supposed to show how people can be struggling and contemplating suicide, and it can be right in front of your face, yet it's still so difficult to really notice. To me that's what Jump has always been about, but I think your analysis also makes a lot of sense. The best thing about Lana songs is that everyone picks it up and derives a different interpretation which is fantasic! -
I agree with the ideas behind your post, but I do think your wording is quite harsh. Depression isn't an easy road, it eats away at people. And I don't think you can really blame Lana for her lack of promotion, live shows, and care for her appearance considering that she most likely is still suffering from depression/anxiety, and also after all the criticism and hate she got from people after the big break of BTD. It's easy for you to say, "I'm entitled as a fan to see a proper performance of hers" but you don't really know how hard things may have been for Lana. I presume you're no famous celebrity with eyes watching from every angle. You've never had to deal with the crap Lana has over the past few years therefore I don't think you can make statements about what Lana should have done/should be doing, because you obviously don't know what's been going on inside her head and the situations she's had to deal with since the rise of her fame. I do agree that a live performance and a little more care for her appearance wouldn't go astray every now and then, and I'd certainly take a little more promo any day, but I think it's hard for us as fans and not as people who know Lana or her situation personally to make proper judgments on what Lana should be doing. It's her life and if she's happy just putting out an album with no promo, no live performances, no TV, not having to worry too much about how she looks, then good for her! She has every right as a human being to do what she wants and we all need to learn that we aren't entitled to anything from Lana. At the end of the day, just be glad you're still getting anything from her. She's such a prolific songwriter, she releases so much music all the time and we've gotten HUNDREDS of leaks yet no one seems to ever be satisfied and everyone just wants more and more. Let Lana live, for goodness sake! She technically owes us nothing so be grateful you've gotten anything over the last few years - considering the backlash she got from BTD, she could have easily just said stuff it and given up, but she kept releasing music because it's what she loves and she wants to treat her fans.

I don't mean to be one of those annoying freaks obsessed with conspiracy theories, but I find it insane that Lana keeps having all these affiliations with dying celebrities. Remember in 2014 when she was scheduled to collaborate with Lou Reed for a song on Ultraviolence, but on that exact day he died! Then Lana goes and references David Bowie lyrics in 'Terrence Loves You' ("Ground control to Major Tom") and talks about him in an interview (how Lana Del Rey isn't a persona or an alter-ego like David Bowie)... then he dies a month or two after? Now, Prince! Not that long ago on the Honeymoon account, do any of you remember this post which read: "Living in the land of Honeymoons & Oil Tycoons. God Bless America, the land of pink champagne & purple rain. This is my favourite perspective / nothing but white sails above and blue waters rolling in front of me for miles and miles." Take a close look, she references "PURPLE RAIN"... and now Prince is dead. I know that it's quite possibly a coincidence, and I'm not saying that we should take any of this too seriously, but I just find it super weird that Lana keeps referencing someone, then not soon after they're dead. It could just be that she is influenced by a lot of older artists, but I just find it so strange regardless.

I agree with all of this, except for the "blue blue blue blue blue blue blue blue blue blue blue" part of Freak, it's just a bit too much for me. I don't mind how she uses the word blue a lot, I think it's a beautiful word and always fits with the mood and feel of the song, but this line in Freak, for me, is just unforgivable. I find it annoying and tacky when any word is used this many times in space, and so quickly. It's less about the word "blue" but the way it's repeated so quickly. But anyway, I love how you've explained all of these lyrics. I completely agree. I think that these sort of fun lyrics are nice to have every now and then and it makes Lana's music so "Lana-ish". I couldn't imagine any other singer having these kinds of words in their songs, and that's exactly why I love them.

Still her best song in my opinion

Omg that video though. Especially the fake crying

Love this interpretation, thanks for sharing. I feel like the line "looking back, my past, it all seems stranger than a stranger" is quite significant in the context of the Freak/Art Deco duo as well.

I'd say it's Public Announcement system. There are PAs everywhere, they are usually hanging on the wall and whenever you hear little messages come through in a shopping centre, for example, it's through a PA system. The PA system for the set was probably to play the music through, so Lana could lip-sync along, or shots could be filmed in time with the music I suppose? -
Omg thank you for linking it, this is so much better than the collab versions. Might just replace the other version on my album with this one

Loving this new style. Hopefully the whole album has this newfound level of maturity, I'm really enjoying it and I think it suits Ariana so well!

Please don't tell me this means we're getting BTD 2.0 I mean, I'd love something with a little bit more energy like Born to Die or Ultraviolence, but I really don't want her to work with producers she's already worked with before, I'm scared she'll just re-create all her old songs in an inferior way. I want something completely new, fresh and exciting. If she is working with Haynie, I hope she at least does something different with him. And hopefully he's learnt not to overuse those horrid screams in the background

How ironic "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" is playing while Francesco is holding Lana in his arms And Franny didn't even pick up on the foreshadowing haha

omg only just saw those videos. So cute!! I can't erase the smile off my face right now. Dare I say it, she has never seemed this happy EVER. Like: She's been at the beach so much lately just having a good ol' time She's been taking so much more care of her appearance and her new hair is what I'm living for She's been going to heaps of events She seems to have reconciled and sorted out her shit with Lady Gaga which is amazing because she went from writing a diss track about her to showing up to her birthday party and posing with her These new videos on Insta indicate she's having a good time and she's gained back a lot of her confidence And her manager just said "beautiful new songs" which is crazy because it sounds like the first time in forever since any of her management have appeared to be truly happy with where she's heading. She's been using her social media more regularly lately so she doesn't seem as withdrawn She's doing festivals!! so she must be in a better state of mind to even be thinking of that Plus she's not with Francesco anymore and I feel like he was a part of her weird moods earlier on. I'm just so happy for her right now, I have so much faith in the next record and whatever direction she's heading musically. There's no way she can write a slow, lethargic album like Honeymoon again now that she's in such a positive state of mind. I don't want another BTD but I do want something with a bit more energy and passion and I definitely have a feeling we're gonna get that. I mean, she even said in that interview last year she could see herself doing a NY record again with more energy.

Lana Del Rey attends Lady Gaga's Hollywood Birthday Party
HawaiianTropic replied to Mind Melt's topic in Appearances
I really do wonder how Gaga and Lana moved on from their peculiar past. Do you think they've ever talked about "So Legit"?? Like, surely it was something they've had to discuss at some point? Or did they just awkwardly move past it and pretend it never happened? -

@@graham4anything I really don't think that @@Flipflopfan was saying Lana should re-create Born to Die or Video Games, they were simply alluding to Lana's lyricism and how Lana needs to improve lyrically for the next album. They were saying how much they love the lyrics in Video Games and would like more songs with lyrics as good as them. They aren't saying they want another Video Games, just a song with lyrics as good as Video Games, which I think is a fair enough thing to say considering the high quality of the lyrics in Video Games. Honeymoon has some exemplary lyrics but overall Lana could still be doing better. You seem to have this idea that Lana is perfect and everything she does is perfect, when in actuality, this isn't the case. Yes, she's AMAZING and in my opinion she's never put out a bad song, but there is always room for improvement, even in the best of the best. And to be frank, Honeymoon doesn't have the best lyrics. They're satisfying and they're pleasant but they're not mind-blowing at the same time. I definitely agree with @@Flipflopfan that she could improve next time around. At the end of the day, I'll be happy with anything Lana puts out next time around, even if it's Honeymoon 2.0, but I would really like something fresh, new and exciting, which in most ways, Honeymoon unfortunately wasn't.
