this song has quickly gone from underwhelming to me to something I absolutely love. I totally understand Lorde's direction and think that Melodrama is going to be a really great album. everyone keeps saying how they're disappointed that it doesn't sound like pure heroine but at the end of the day I really don't expect it to. Lorde was 16 living in New Zealand when PH came out, so of course its going to sound like a record made by an angsty teen. But now that she's 20 and seen the world I'm not surprised her sound has gone in a different direction. at the end of the day this is an artists piece of art, not an obligation to fans to remain in the same sphere of sound/visuals/whatever. natural progression in someone's life dictates the direction of the project, not what they've done in the past or what their fans "want"

I've had it on replay since it released, it's still incredible to me. It just gives me such a nostalgic feeling (especially the outtro) even though it just came out ??????

The song sounds super promising until the backtrack kicks in for the first time. After that, it's generic

theres very specific parts of the song I like a lot and then parts I really wish she did differently. The lyrics aren't her best but I can relate so I enjoy them

As a big Lorde stan I'll give my honest op:
It's ok. I prefer it more than most of the stuff in the charts now. But I don't love it. I'm not getting that tingly feeling I did with PH. It does sound manufactured and bland in my op, or at least compared to her old stuff. I don't dislike it, but I only just like it. The lyrics aren't amazing either... and that's one of the things I crave from her.
But this is just one single. I'm not going to say she's 'sold-out' until I hear the whole album.
Please Lorde, give us something good!

The piano melody is very ~quirky and faux hipster pandering. I can see the buzzfeed articles already: 10 gifs that describe our reaction to Lorde's new song or Lorde dropped a new single and we are shook

OMG!!! that's what i think too.
the verse and the prechorus+chorus are nice separately
but it feels weird to be blended together.
