I know. She listens to only singles by music legends (The Doors! Elvis! Bob Dylan! Frank Sinatra! Biggie!), strictly reads canonized literature (Lolita! Leaves of Grass! Howl!), and only appreciates classic films (The Godfather! The Godfather Part II! American Beauty!). Her taste isn't nuanced or inspired (see: "Oh, I just like the masters of every genre"). It's laughable when she claims that she has a ~true appreciation for the arts, she lives and breathes it, and simply can't be bothered to be affiliate with those she believes doesn't~ when it seems her current* taste is dependent on whether or not the artist/work in question has reached a revered status.

Her inspirations read like a compilation of ~the best of the best~ from the who-sayers and taste-makers of "classic" work, these influential, "renowned" American media institutions. It's almost as though she trailed her finger up and down Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, American Film Institute's Greatest Films and Greatest Contemporary Works of the 20th Century** when choosing her influences...

No one can truly call into question something as deeply personal and visceral as one's passion for any given thing. It is impossible for me to make the case that Lana's excessively trite influences somehow diminish her ability to "...care about music deeply..." or to "...really [live] it and [breathe] it." Still, if I can't definitively say that Lana's passion for music is diminished because of her cookie-cutter influences, then who is she to say that others "...don't actually care about music and art" and that "they want to be cool"? Who said that she's the absolute authority in appreciating music and poetry and art? Even more compelling: Why is the person who ruthlessly had their authenticity called into question early in their career (to the point they went on to call it "lies" and "slander" in this very interview, mind you) suddenly calling into question the authenticity of fellow artists? What fucking hypocritical bullshit. She sounds like a real prick. She'll need all the good luck she can get finding that "high-class group of musicians" to be a part of because with that elitist attitude I suspect she'll have a really difficult time.

Great article, thanks for the tip! Except their description of Gesaffelstein which is very cheap. He already released a tons of remix and a couple of EPs, he's always on tour everywhere and he dropped this masterpiece 3 days ago *sneaky promotion*

SPIN did a fascinating run-down on every name in the credits, which was really helpful (especially as a new fan) to my understanding of the album and its creation. I wouldn't have seen the Daft Punk collaborations coming, just from listening to the songs they worked on.

I'm really loving "Bound 2" right now. I mean, I literally laugh out loud when he's all "I wanna fuck you in the bathroom sink", but the way Charlie's vocals combine with the samples is just   .

I am in agreement with those who think this is an annoying, defensive, evasive, whiny interview. What bothers me though is not so much her “attitude” but how juvenile she can be.

Also, she seems to not really understand a lot of concepts and things that she’s asked about. For example, i don’t think she really knows what it means to be anti-feminist. I have never read anything from her about art, politics, or philosophy that gave me the impression she had anything to say on the matter. I wonder if she is as much of a simpleton/anti-intellectual/philistine, etc. as she comes across in interviews or if it’s an act. That’s not something i hold against her, i’m just making an observation (through my biased lens obviously). I still wonder if she has some sort of “personality disorder” (which i've wondered pretty much since day 1, so that is not something i'm drawing up because she was a bit erratic in this interview) or if she’s on a lot of antidepressants.

At any rate, i have a hard time finding anything engaging or interesting in her interviews. The more of them that i read/watch, the more i see her fitting into this pattern i’ve noticed in my life where the people whose music i really love are the ones who i’m least interested in as people (do any of you experience this too?), which is one reason why i have no interest in meeting any artists whose music i follow. BUT...this is also, i think, another testament to the potency of music, that it can allow me to take an interest in the lives of people who i’d otherwise have little to no interest in.

I just took a mbti test in my OB class the other day, and I am also INFP. Funnily enough, I didn't even realise she was coming off as arrogant or dismissive in the interview until I read everyone's opinions here. I just thought it sounded like Lana being Lana.

I guess I can relate because my opinion also changes from one day to the next depending on how I feel and if I like the person I'm talking too (yes that includes getting vibes off people, I'm an aquarius lol). I speak to over 200 people a day on a one-to-one basis and I conduct myself based on how they make me feel when I interact with them. I never put on a false front anymore; it's far too exhausting with that many people.

A lot of people think I'm a bitch or flaky as shit but that's just how I am. My boyfriend says I'm an odd duck...

I've thought about this a lot too. I'm really not sure if she's just weird, actually on drugs or mentally ill. At any rate she seems to respond to flattery really well. Like in any interview where the interviewer has confessed to being a fan of work or isn't critical she just coos and we see cutesy, forthcoming lana. But then in other interviews (take oystermag for instance) we see this strange, disconnected woman who wants to end the interview because she's getting "weird vibes" off the interviewer. Maybe a lot of it comes down to coping with becoming as famous as she has in such a short period of time. Who knows tbh.

Health-care, feminism are not intimate subjects LOL...its not like the interviewer asked what is the brand of her tampon. I dont understand how making questions about religion, politics or feminism can be considerated intimate. They are general questions about how she sees society and the world she lives in. Intimate is asking personal questions about her boyfriend and her personal life.

Hey, so, i'm going to spend two years telling people that i'm more of a singles person and that my favorite songs are Hotel California and Wicked Game (which i will continually refer to as Wicked Games) and all the hits by the masters of every genre, like, uhm, Bob Dylan and Kurt Cobain and Eminem, and then lament the fact that i just can't meet anyone with such a deep passion and appreciation for music like my boyfriend and i have. You know, people who really live and breath music? Never mind, no one understands.

oh goodness this has become one of those divisive interviews~   this thread is a mess.  I get what some of you are saying about overt patriotism~ But I just find it confusing for the girl that was waving around her American flags, has referenced America in at LEAST 10 songs (not counting American landmarks, specific cities, etc.), and said she "believes in the country America used to be" (still don't know what this means, maybe something to do with the American dream?), etc. has completely thrown Americana out of her lyrical inspirations and says she's not patriotic "anymore" ..

If she had substantiated reasoning, that'd be one thing~but you guys saying she felt alienated or that she didn't have a fan base here is completely untrue. Look at her album sales, look at her sold out shows in LA + NY following the release of BTD.  Did you see how packed Amoeba records was?  I felt like this interview was a fuck you, America and fuck you American fans who have supported you since you came on the scene

I think it's important to not be unduly critical- she is human, we contradict ourselves and sometimes we paint ourselves in the way we want to look/seem to others, and not necessarily the way we are ~ however, I feel like some will just excuse anything she says. She's just like me! She's misunderstood! Faults are a part of being human and she's not perfect.  She is a public figure and once you put these things out there, you have to be held accountable.  Yes, it is mostly about the music but you can't deny that at least some of the reason why you are such a fan~ and why you've joined a forum revolving around her~ is because of Lana Del Rey the person. I'm just saying you can still be a fan and not even like her most of the time. (does that even make sense? idk, i have a lot of feelingz)  I still find her completely intriguing, even if she's not necessarily my cup of tea, and I think the conversation regarding her personality is interesting~ perhaps we should make a separate thread for that to discuss

I think it's just one of the many facets of Lana Del Rey. You see the cutesy, fun side when she's on stage/ with her fans~ and I think that's genuine, I don't think you can really fake that.  And then sometimes, with the press, she comes off as cold and aloof. I think she was a girl who is so used to being liked or accepted and wasn't prepared for criticism.  She's sweet to the people that she knows love her already, and wary or perhaps even snotty to interviewers. (You may recall the Oyster mag interview where she continuously asks the interviewer if they like her music or not and then Fearne interviews- she is always kind because she knows Fearne is a fan) I mean, when you think back to her Lizzy Grant interviews, I believe all of them garnered praise, none of them were really negative.  It's like someone needs to tell her that not everyone is going to like you, and that's okay.  I also think she tries to give the appearance that she doesn't care what people think but that couldn't be further from the truth. (After all, we all do to some extent)  I wanna be the whole world's girl may be her most narrative lyric in LDR existence, imo. She wants everyone to like her, and because she got so much criticism after SNL from her home country, she's kind of turned her nose up at America.. as if it is impossible for us to comprehend her deeply philosophical lyrics,~pepsi cola pussy- that's ayn rand, right?? Criticism is a part of life, I agree it was in excess following SNL, but as I've said before, the press has moved on and so should she. I mean, Y&B even charted higher in the US!

There were some really interesting answers through all... that. But at some point it was an annoying mix of pretentiousness and endless justifications that she doesn't have to give really. I don't know why she gets like that in some interviews, does she dislike the journalist, is she having a bad day, I can't tell.
