i was thinking about this today, kinda. in my view the israel thing was infinitely worse & didn't get anywhere near the backlash this did. personally, it was the closest i ever got to unstanning her (and by this i mean downright stop listening to her music) - and tbh if she hadn't canceled the show, even if she did so with a lame ass excuse, i probably would've.
not to say she didn't do/say anything wrong this time, but ultimately the victims/targets of her ignorance and tone deafness here are rich, famous, successful women. in the israel debacle she showed a total disregard for the lives of oppressed, colonized, poor civilians & an unwillingness to listen to those who tried to explain to her why it was wrong to perform there.
this is not an invitation to discuss the israel-palestine conflict, btw. i've learned my lesson re: discussing politics on lb. my point is that this goes to show how hypocritical and performative a lot of these concerned responses are, how people care so very much when it's a pop culture matter & someone they idolize is being targeted, but not when it affects regular brown people dying in another continent.

Thing is Lana has made some decent points. She shouldn't of dropped any names tho, that was fucking stupid. Lana what possessed you to include female POC, especially when they face even harsher criticism and issues with the music industry Christ even by mentioning them she was bound to get dragged.
If she mentioned Gaga, Madonna or Taylor Swift instead of ANY POC she would've had a better reception. Mainly BC y'know there white and as privileged as Lana is.

yeah she sounds like a 4 year old when she says stuff like that...it’s very off putting. no adult i know says “i’m glamorous” seriously.

I think that a lot of the reactions solely show that the interpretation of the content is part of the problem. If you see her telling her story of volatile and emotionally-abusive relationships as her "liking it," then you're again putting the blame on the woman and inferring that her "no" was a "yes."
I just don't understand why she's discussing this now rather than in 2014 (and she already had). Critics have praised her in recent years for being freely feminine and showing that women can be messy/have complex emotions. Her subject matter has also evolved to a new outward-looking perspective, or she details stories of life in complex environments rather than a focus on deeply intimate relationships. She expressed herself in an incredibly poor manner and this feels so unnecessary.

As a black woman in America who has experiences racism in all different forms since I was in the kindergarten, I will type up however much I want about racism and how easy it is to go unnoticed. Again, you don't have be a racist to be say something racist. Not saying Lana is A racist. Just that what she failed to look at these women and their careers with a non privileged lens. What she said reeks of ignorance because all of them have had hardships of their own from the media and public, with a lot of it being related to race.

Microaggressions are a real thing. Racism isn't always overt and large. The smaller, more subtle ways of it do matter and have an impact. And it's most often not even known by the person perpetuating it. I don't think she was aware of intricacies behind what she was saying. And all of those women have absolutely caught flack for singing about sex.

As a black woman, this statement doesn’t sit right with me. I don’t know how to feel about this. I’m just really disturbed by the amount of Lana stans that are like “wow she’s gonna get dragged for this lol ppl are stupid” without being empathetic or even considering why people feel the way they feel. At the moment, black twitter is ripping her to shreds, as they should, bcus this statement just screams of white feminism.
edit: and yes I know she has gotten backlash in the day, but why would you even include Beyoncé who has constantly been criticized by the whole of America since she even set foot on the music scene? ion know man just seeing that post that tries to “explain” why she did this, and dismissing the people who are critiquing it by saying that they’re young.....even if so, that doesn’t explain her bitterness towards the artists she mentions, which are mostly woc (and weird she mentioned kehlani when she never had a #1). and to say that there’s a place for girls like her in feminism too? Lana....vulnerable white women have always been at the forefront of feminism, with girls like Doja and Kehlani not even being considered.
Like I said, I don’t know how to feel. Seeing the reactions on this site, her subreddit, and even popheads just reminds me how lonely I feel as a black woman that has her as one of my musical inspirations. Yes, I want to be a singer-songwriter (this is the first time I’ve kinda publicly declared this without shame), and she’s one of the many artists that inspire me. I wish I could feel excited for the album, but I’m too sad too. I don’t feel seen and this statement just shows that she doesn’t care much about woc issues at all. I have to leave here for a bit.
edit 2: also for that person who tried to act as if Beyoncé wasn’t as criticized (if not even MORE) as Lana, literally there were whole police units who boycotted to protect her. pls lol.
edit 3: her having to add kehlani in there when she never got a #1......I don’t want to say the implications of that but....ugh ion know y’all. I need to process this

I lowkey think she's having a midlife crisis too. She's 35 exactly one month today and that's quite a milestone birthday and her last outburst diary entry was about her feelings of inadequacy that she is not a mother yet and obviously the relationship that she has been most public about and seemed to be most promising for her has seemingly deteriorated. Posting a photo half-hiding that you're reading an Alcoholics Anonymous book is also sending a clear signal.
Maybe all her career she's been thinking she'll feel fulfilled once she wins the approval of certain people or publications and being recognised by the Recording Academy. I think coming off the back of her most well-received album after all that hype died down she is not feeling the way she expected to feel. It's odd because she seemed to be genuinely happy during the NFR! album cycle. It was really fulfilling as a fan to see her posts where she was expressing thanks, the IGTV video she did where she was super excited about the reception of the album, the fact she invited so many musicians with smaller audiences to collaborate with her on tour, her pairing with Weyes Blood and Zella Day to sing a song she loved. Everything seemed to be aligning for her.
Now I think the most current state we all associate her with is almost bitterness and anger. I don't think its particularly wise to be posting them or articulating them that way - but she's kept her mouth shut for the most of her career and by continuing to do so that would just prove her point of how feminism has not worked for her because she hasn't been able to express her feelings as they wouldn't be deemed pseudo-progressive or unifying.
I do agree she is not without fault. It is very unfortunate for her that the few times she has directly called people out, they have been black artists. Azealia Banks. Kanye West. Her latest post (Beyonce hasn't even had a no.1 since she duetted with fucking Ed Sheeran on that lame ass song). And her latest flame being a literal TV cop...
Anyway, we know Lana can be very fickle as we have had this audiobook/album dangling over us for 4 months and the poetry book for like 14 months, so I don't think this is going to end well for her or that she will react at all positively to the can of worms she has just opened.

There is a reason they say "brevity is the soul of wit", and we've just witnessed it.
1) Yeah, names were (completely) unnecessary. I guess her post shows us that she has no confidants to filter her before she posts things (or that such confidants are not very "good"). As was brought up above, there have been plenty of song eras (including the current one) that deal with obsessive (a term I prefer to abusive/submissive) love affairs, etc. She only has to assert that her songwriting is well within the norms of such (as it really is, imo), and let people do the work of finding exemplars. I mean the critics are supposed to be able to do that easily, by definition of being knowledgable (although most may not be). And while it was true that she was ridiculed irrationally in the BTD era, she did in fact win that war (BTD sold the most of her records and is considered a classic of sorts). Why can't she just let go?
2) In the imaginary discussions I have had with her (with my imaginary friend James Franco recording), she say's after saying "I'm not a feminist": "I'm a humanist". Ah well....insert face-palm here.
3) Yes, it's ok to revisit older song modes. Give us that 25 song unreleased album! Call it "The Worst of Lana Del Rey" and take home that AOTY. -

Her post could've been good if she learned how to edit. Idk this whole situation has me very jaded and I find it really embarrassing that someone her age who has been high level famous for so long still pulls shit like this. She's so hyper privileged and oblivious sometimes. I guess I'm just glad I can separate the art from the artist.

because she needs a pr team and pr training and not this mess that she’s posted online a few times already, the delivery of her message was extremely clunky and i don’t understand how it’s been 84 years and she still hasn’t learned that when it comes to important messages or announcements there’s no room for messiness like this

My thoughts on the matter, even though it's been talked about to death:
Being bitter about someone's success is never a good look. While it's understandable that Lizzy may have been frustrated about her own stagnant career and most likely wrote this song in a sort of therapeutic attempt to get these feelings out, I sincerely doubt that this was the extent of her reasons for penning this, like @@TrailerParkDarling claims. I think she was specifically mad at Gaga, the pettiness of the lyrics coupled with the argument with Arthur over her gives me this gut feeling tells me otherwise. Girl was PRESSED.
I'm not a Gaga fan -- I don't mind her though -- but I really don't like this song because of the nature of its lyrics and I'd rather I never heard it. (Granted, it was never supposed to be heard anyway). It's too petty a song for me to enjoy.
As for the Gaga-Lana comparisons, @@SitarHero did a really good job of shutting down the poorly-thought ~criticism~ of Gaga. It was laughable that those comparisons were even made! I don't know too much about Lady Gaga (Sitar can attest to this, seeing as I can't even pronounce her name properly ) but I always had the impression that despite the seemingly "huge ego", i.e., pretentiousness, being ~avant garde~, Born this Way being the album of the decade, etc, that for the most part, these are calculated acts and I think Gaga possesses a lot more self-awareness than she is given credit for. I don't think Gaga thinks that she's the be-all and end-all of pop music. She's far more self-aware and intelligent to truly think that, but in the same vein as @'s speculation: it's a part of a marketing strategy, whether intentional or not: if you call yourself x or y enough times, your fans, and in turn, the media, picks up on it. I don't know if any of you follow Beyonce's career, but she has the words "(future) legend" following her in the media, and why? Her team purposely marketed her as A LEGEND. So while Beyonce is a now undisputedly a ~legend~ in the media, Gaga is ~the saviour of pop music~ and all sorts of other huge titles. It's cool and I respect that. I don't think Gaga herself honestly buys into huge hype surrounding her, but rather feeds the machine because it gets attention and sales. I don't think she really, truly believes a lot of the outlandish statements she makes, where as I read Lana saying something like this:
and I think she 100% believes it. Gaga might say something akin to that but it's a part of an act she's too smart to believe or buy into.
TL;DR: Lana thinks she's this special snowflake poet but appears to be more grounded due to a more restrained attitude with the media, Gaga talks herself up like she's a God of Pop Music but possesses the self-awareness to realize that in essence, she's just another artist turning the gears in the media/music-industry machine. (And why not do it under the guise of pretentiousness and a larger-than-life-ego?) I wouldn't take each artist at face value. Feel free to disagree. -

I'm a pretty critical (and vocal) fan and I've been pretty skeptical when it comes to certain things she says... but for some reason I think she's been very sincere and honest about whatever charitable causes or outreach programs she's been a part of. The impression I have from what she's said is that she's been relatively straightforward about it. I don't think she brings it up to make herself look good, nor do I think she's talked about it too frequently. I also don't think she's necessarily obligated to be specific about the work that she's done (nor do I think she can really win here. If she were more specific, it'd probably be perceived as an insincere mention to ~make herself look good~). Whatever work you do to give back to your community should be private, imo (just as it is yours).
As for speaking about it in order to get more people involved (i.e., what others can do to help), drug and alcohol awareness work isn't the sort of volunteer work that the average joe can easily undertake or necessarily understand, so I think she gets a pass on that. See below:
Sitar, you might find the last paragraph in the spoiler of interest for Lanalysis?

According to Lana, voicing your own opinion (which Kanye has done) automatically makes him delusional and in need of an intervention. Hm.
She has no problem calling out other people's apparent flaws based upon who they support/speak with but she will not address the fact that she idolises woman beaters and has not uttered a word about musicians she associates with such as Jared Leto, BØREDs, Rocky, etc.
Yet she complains that Kanye won't address her thoughts.

SUCH an advocate for women!
Aside from the fact that she's been silent about her and her sister's friend BØREDs, proceeded to collaborate with Rocky despite his history, idolises woman beater John Lennon and his "peace" tripe... the list continues. Funny how she concluded her comment guessing that Kanye wouldn't address her thoughts, yet she's failed to address the aforementioned herself.
How convenient. I guess ignorance really is bliss when it's someone you know/are a fan of!
