So I think the album sounds more mature in production. But the choruses don't- most are repetitive, some relying on vocal distortion to sound more interesting. Crybabys choruses were amazing in catchiness and lyrical content so I'm not sure what happened here. It's like she had such a strong vision in mind with K-12 and the movie that she was afraid to tease out the choruses more? I guess we'll see once it all matches up with movie clips. 
 
The album themes do get a bit darker as she described, but not by much. Orange Juice is the one that comes to mind. But I think crybaby touched on a lot of dark topics in several songs, and a broader range.
 
I also remember her saying she was experimenting with vintage toy sounds. Besides wheels on the bus, where are these? I didn't hear them. 
 
But I'm still so excited for the movie and I have no doubt that my best friend coming to see it with me, who is not yet a fan of Mel, is going to fall hard and absolutely love it. I already converted her to be a Lana stan after thinking all her songs sound the same

I don't like how straightforward the lyrical content on k-12 is compared to crybaby 

I wish some of the song lyrics weren’t so on the nose. It was to be expected judging by the titles but damn.. With Crybaby she did a good job at having the baby metaphores but having the lyrics not be so direct and on the nose. K-12 isn’t a bad album though. The direct references are just.. ehh. It’ll make sense with the movie but I wish we could also seperate the album from the movie.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand How to Disappear. The meaning is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of the struggles of alcoholism most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Lana's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into her characterisation- her personal philosophy draws heavily from the Despicable Me franchise, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of the jingle bells, to realise that she's not just deep- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike How to Disappear truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the meaning in Lana's defining line "this is how to disappear" which itself is a cryptic reference to Radiohead's 4th track on Kid A "How To Disappear Completely". I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Elizabeth Grant's genius wit unfolds itself into their headphones. What fools.. how I pity them.    And yes, by the way, i DO have a How to Disappear tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the twinks' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel f*g

I mean, the snippets do sound the same production wise. There’s a difference between cohesiveness and repetitiveness. They’re only snippets tho so who knows where the songs will go.

What if this song is about the apocalypse? I was listening, and I've seen people with a few theories such as the end of Lana's career / this being her last album, and some other theories, but...
 
"The culture is lit, and if this is it, then I've had a ball / I guess I'm burned out after all" What if she means this in a literal sense? Maybe it's about global warming and how the earth is pretty much on fire at this point?
 
And with other lyrics like "Life on mars ain't just a song / Hawaii just missed that fireball / L.A. is in flames, it's getting hot" it's pretty clear that she's talking about the world ending and/or the world going to complete garbage. And with the lyric "Oh, the livestream's almost on" maybe she's talking about people who are so engaged with their laptops and phones that don't even realize what's going on with the world.
