  1. I'm pretty sure the jazz snippet I have is ripped from the movie because I can hear mumbling voices and laughing, plus Lana's voice is really low in the mix.

  3. So possibly two new songs with Lana (Falling Apart + Wait For Life). We also got the snippet of Riverside from Barrie. If Brian Wilson posts a clip of "Last Song," I will die. If all these songs came to fruition, my "Officially released Lana songs without an album" album would finally not be lonely. So far it's got Big Eyes, I Can Fly, Once Upon A Dream, and like four versions of Young & Beautiful. Lana's so good to us. I don't think any of the the artists I follow are nearly as prolific as Lana is. Maybe Kesha, I don't know her unreleased too well.

    Are all CD versions explicit? I can't find one that, well, explicitly marks it as explicit. Since the Target version said nothing and ended up being censored, I'm kinda worried. I'm not going to buy another one if it turns out all CDs are censored.

    They're complaining that it might be the other f word, the homophobic slur. I'm not listening to any tracks that aren't Breaking Up, London Queen, or Break The Rules because I want some semblance of surprise for when I listen to the album. It's tough (when ARTPOP streamed early I wanted to listen soooo bad) but if I get the tracks beforehand I may as well not buy the album. EDIT: I'm still upset "So Over You" will be a European exclusive. ??? I detest region and website exclusive tracks. I know Target gets the Money cover, but I'd rather have a Charli original than a cover... really I'd rather they all be on one album instead of spread across different versions of the album. I'm debating whether to import European Sucker or just buy the US one. I'll probably just buy the US one and remain pressed my CD won't have SOY, but add it on my digital playlists. </rant over>

  8. I think the famous SNL performances weren't as bad as people made them out to seem. Video Games in particular doesn't deserve the rep it got. BUT I'm listening to Blue Jeans now and at the beginning her voice sounds like she was caught in a burp. I don't think it sounded good at all. Thankfully it doesn't last throughout the performance. She does some actual belting on the second chorus, which impressed me because I'd never heard her sound like that (I will love you TILL the end of time). Her attempts at belting on studio recordings like Tired of Singing the Blues and Queen of Disaster sounded completely different. She definitely has a wide variety of vocal colors to exploit. Although her low voice is, indeed, haunting, I don't think it's a natural or comfortable form of singing before. Listen to Kinda Outta Luck, a studio performance. Her pitch wavers on the lowest notes ("I was born baaaaaaad" and "I did what I had to dooooooo"). That she doesn't sing the lowest notes of SS and VG life is more evidence that she's not all that comfortable singing down there. She herself says she "started singing lower" to be taken more seriously, so it wasn't a natural way of singing for her. If you listen to Sirens-era material, her voice is lighter and freer. She has a really beautiful vibrato on Drive-By, which she appears to have lost when she used her "smoky chanteuse voice" (think SS chorus, intro to KOL, OUAD) and "baby Lolita voice" (chorus of OTTR, Lolita obvs, basically whenever she uses her full voice in a higher register). It makes sense - those are forced 'voices' she puts on. If she sounds better now, as many people seem to think, perhaps she's gotten enough practice with using these unnatural registers to sound better. Having talked about the smoky chanteuse, I must now confront the Baby Lolita voice. It reminds me of Gaga's baby-ish voice on The Fame (if you're not a Gaga fan that's ok but please don't go on like 'how dare you compare the Queen of New York/Saigon/Disaster to that illuminati harlot you philistine'), very affected. It's more like she's singing as a character, if you get what I mean. Much like her flaw with the Smoky Chanteuse is sounding forced, her flaw with the Baby Lolita is a lack of control. A lot of people like Million Dollar Man live, but I think it's pretty bad and hard to listen to even as a Lana fan (listen to the Album de la Semaine performance where she goes off pitch on "one for the monay-EEEEEEEEE"). She does this fluttering thing that's pretty notable; the only example I can think of right now is "sometimes LOOOVE is NOOOT enough" from BTD, but I know other Lana fans have noticed this before. While I'm not sure it's something she does on purpose, I like the effect it gives. There are other vocal qualities she uses on her non-album unreleased tracks. Listen to her belting near the end of Queen of Disaster and compare it to the falsetto high note in Cola. True Love On The Side is a very different performance of Lana, and I loved it from the first time I heard it. The chorus of Velvet Crowbar uses this voice too ("you're like crack to me" "my baby's on his eight life darling"). I can't think of a name for this 'voice'. It sounds like what Lana would sound like if she belted using her full voice in a mid-register as opposed to lightening and thinning her voice for Baby Lolita. She does have attitude when she uses this voice ("yo, GOOD LUCK" from Noir). I guess I'll call it Cartoon Character. Last but not least, the Sirens era voice. I really like her tone here - it's so pure and you can tell she's singing without any pretensions. She's not a femme fatale or alluring jailbait or a cartoon - she's just Elizabeth Grant, singing quite frankly about finding a really cool belt at this lame department store. I think this is her singing at her "most natural" and also her "healthiest." The trade-off, if you can call it that, is that there isn't much to distinguish her from other soft-voiced singer-songwriters. Smoky Chanteuse and Baby Lolita are cartoonish, but they are recognizable and inimitable. I'll call it Sensitive Singer-Songwriter. Maybe you've read this and thought "wow, you're so harsh on Lana. why are you even a fan go stan for katy perry smh." I would like to take this time to say that a specialty of Lana's is being able to reach all of these different voices in the first place! She has not just a chameleon soul, but a chameleon voice. From the comfort of the studio, she can exploit her ~vocal palette~ as she wishes. Adele has a strong soul voice, but Lana is at least four different people in one. Considering her penchant for essentially portraying characters, it makes sense that she's flexible in this regard! And she can switch between these voices in one song - OTTR goes from Smoky Chanteuse to Baby Lolita in just the verses. Blue Jeans is another great example. If variety is the spice of life, Lana is a spice rack. She has a lot of weird idiosyncracies; her lyrical ones (daddy, red party dress, pale moonlight, etc) are the most notable but she's vocally interesting too. That's why she's so ~~~special~~~

"Is this what you wished, to leave me behind?" One speculation about "Rehab" was that it was actually about Jimmy Gnecco, who might've been the "local rockstar" she says she met in rehab. Why is the song called For K Part 2 now? That's anybody's guess.
  11. Nobody knows who K is or if he is real. "Double homicide, sent him on to death row, not to hang around though" That's one hell of a metaphor. K refers to a person, although his existence is disputed. I don't think he's Kurt Cobain or any other thing. The only other reference to him by name is For K pt 2, and that was originally titled Rehab. Everything else we have goes back to the info in Drive-By (death row criminal in jail) and is an inference.
  12. Ok so I looked at her FB again and I noticed that on the list of artists she's liked, she liked "Lana Del Rey." She also lists Jimmy Gnecco, Kassidy and Carney. Any other ex-boyfriend bands we should be aware of? She still has the pic of her and Barrie as her profile, which is listed as being from Feb 2013, so it might be safe to say she doesn't use this account anymore.
  13. Sorry to be dumb but what singer is this? I've been racking my brain to think of non-pop singers recently going pop for a soundtrack and nothing. I like the verse and chorus, but the trumpets will take some getting used to.

V1 has the "Hey" in parenthesis. V2 just has a hey! background vocal on every chorus, like hit it (hey) and run. I know dead-a-ly is deadly, but I felt her unique pronunciation had to be preserved for posterity. 1 minute Lanalysis, I'd say this song is a fantasy and has no basis in reality, a glorification of Arthur with his diet MTN dew "label", or related to the 7 year relationship she mentioned that may have had something to do with a record executive? "Sitting in your lap for my interview" reminds me of this interview where she mentioned making out with a handsome record executive.
  20. Off BTD, Million dollar man. It was unlike anything else on that album and I loved the jazzy bluesy feel. It felt relatable in some ways. If it weren't for this song, I might never have made it to the end of the album. From her unreleased, I love go go dancer, the song with most plays in my collection. TV in black and white is new to me, but it's so heartbreaking to listen to. Beautiful song. Drive By is my favorite sirens era song. The desperation in that final question, did you want to die? This song convinced me K was a person, not some concept. Real or imagined, he's a striking character. Her voice is lovely here, before she started lowering it and darkening her tone. Listen to that vibrato! Yayo is probably my favorite off LDR, though mermaid motel and jump deserve special mentions. That part where she goes "it only take two hours to Nevada, I wear your sparkle, you call me your mama." Beautiful melody, especially the reprise at the end where she sings it an octave lower. The paradise version lost the magic.
  21. I think most people here prefer Lana's "slow and serious" songs, but I love her poppy Britney Spears type songs as well. I'm really curious about them, too - the music she ended up making on her albums has nothing to do with GGD or BCD. Were they meant for another artist, like Meet me in the pale moonlight? Did her label want to market her as a "pop girl" to compete with Katy Perry and Rihanna? One of the things I also like doing is imagining what a Lana pop album would have looked like. I know everyone has different categories for what constitutes pop, or what would be good enough to put on an album, so I'd love to see that. Personally, I have a Playlist called "Just A Party Girl" with these songs (not this order): 1. Go Go Dancer 2. St. Tropez 3. Behind closed doors 4. Hit and run (v1) 5. In the sun 6. Is it wrong 7. Queen of disaster 8. Take me to Paris 9. Puppy love 10. Jealous girl 11. She's not me (ride or die) 12. Paradise 13. Ooh Baby I think St. Tropez would be a great single I have a longer one called "more than just a party girl" with songs like Ghetto Baby and Butterflies pt. 2, but a lot of those songs I don't think are good enough to be on a hypothetical album (summer of Sam, making out). Some I love but I don't want to have a really long album. What do you guys think? Why does Lana have so many unused pop songs? What would a Lana pop album look/sound like?
  22. Lanalysis is mostly about relationships but there's stuff there about her personal life. If you want to relate song lyrics to her life in any way, you should join us there. Someone mentioned a schoolgirl/teacher kink and I need to show them evilentity's post in Lanalysis. I'm on mobile so I'm not gonna look for it now, but the first post of Lanalysis has what I'm talking about. I don't think Lana is into stereotypical BDSM with whips and leather and doggy collars. Something mild, maybe. She talks about violent love a lot; ultraviolence isn't new in her music. As to what extent her "100% autobiographical" lyrics reveal something about her... that's a debate for the ages.

  24. People who aren't trained in singing tend to breathe loudly to get the breath they need for their songs. If you hear classically trained singers, they tend to go out of their way to eliminate the breathing noise. In popular music, hearing the breathing is viewed as raw and real as opposed to poor technique, so they don't even try to take it out (it's pretty easy to edit out breath intakes a lot of the time...). Lana aims for a "sultry" sound on songs like OUAD, which requires a breathy tone. I can't say if she does it more or less than other singers. For the most part, I don't notice it so I'd say her breath intake isn't much more than any other singer. I know this one song by this one singer that's gorgeous but her constant sharp breaths make it sound unprofessional and ugly. She clearly had trouble singing the song and you can hear it in the performance. It's kind of a shame that it came out so noticeable because it's a beautiful song.
  25. Didn't the Kill kill EP get a limited release? I've heard of people owning copies through this forum. Edit: yup, some promo CDs exist of kill kill. Radio exile has some when they reviewed her show. I doubt anyone will ever get one, but maybe patient rich hardcore collectors will benefit from this.
