I remember seeing this picture of Lana for the first time. She's wearing a traditional romanian cloth called ''ie'' and I was not offended at all. In fact, I was super excited that she liked this from our culture. Why should I be mad? If a celebrity like Lana shows appreciation for my culture in some way I can't be anything but excited. I would be offended if she directly said that our culture sucks because that wouldn't be nice. But when somebody shows appreciation towards a part of your culture and then you bash them for apparently not being allowed to wear that or to sing that, then you are kind of close minded..That's my opinion.

Hm. I'm not necessarily saying that the accent was used tactfully, but in certain countries like India, it is actually recommended that one uses an Indian accent. The natives learn and use English that way, and it dramatically helps communication with those who haven't yet learned much of the language. I have no idea if this would also be commonplace for gringos in latin countries, but I can imagine that the concept would be the same.

Prior to dropping West Coast, Lana had paparazzi photograph her chiefing on some parliament cigarettes while she walked around listening to her own music.

Is this a less subtle nod towards a proper Yosemite release?

Anyone can be a fan by their own prerogative.

    Regardless,

I was. The media does enough to objectify women. If we stop consistently drawing attention to appearances, the conversation changes. What a breath of fresh air, especially for someone like Lana, no?

The shallow commentary is indicative of young, insecure minds.

Who here would still listen to Lana if she stopped selling her image alongside of her music?

Not denying that. But honestly, the biggest reason why the album didn't do well is because nothing was selling it. Not even the singles. And the same happened in the US too. Didn't do that hot either. All this nonsense about hairdos and people buying albums when they "feel good" about an artist is bullshit, and if she "flopped" commercially (stupid word), it's not like she's a lost cause. Born To Die/Paradise did well because they had very good, unique pop songs selling them, with very well-done (VIRAL) music videos accompanying those songs. Ultraviolence had West Coast and Shades of Cool - I love those songs but Blue Jeans and Summertime Sadness they are not. And the videos were very stripped down. I won't even get into the fiasco that was the Ultraviolence video and single.

Plain and simple. Music sells when all the right ingredients are in place, and there was plenty of money making sure that was going to happen when she released BTD. It capitalized on the catchy-nature of that album. Ultraviolence was not an album of singles, we all know this.

All in all though, I don't really give a fuck if people in the UK don't like  her anymore so oh well. I only lament the lack of good visuals in the Ultraviolence era - everything else was really satisfying for me. Me I'm Mariah seems to feel like it's about what other people are thinking, I just don't really understand or relate to that.

my thoughts are a bit of a jumbled mess, so bear with me

i get what you mean, but I don't necessarily agree with you. i think she's passionate about her music, but i think she's equally passionate about fame and the prospect of being revered/respected as an artist.

i think lana LOVES fame. fame is the huge part of the drive that propels lana to do what she does. she lives and thrives for attention, for admiration. what she doesn't like is the negative aspects of fame: the criticism (deserved or undeserved), being subject to slander and lies, scrutiny, etc. she's not like (for lack of a better example), kurt, who probably could've lived in solitude, who felt he didn't deserve the admiration of his fans...

i think she's very success-orientated: perhaps not in the traditional sense of pushing records, selling units and climbing the charts, but in the sense of one day becoming revered, being liked and respected. ( and i don't think it was a coincidence that all of her idols are all these revered, iconic talents, that attained levels of god-like fame and admiration, with fans and/or critics...  (on another note, i find this new found interest in other grunge talents, like her spotify playlist or whatever, to be really disingenuous.... she's never mentioned being strongly influenced by those artists before....)

i also don't think it was a coincidence that lana decided to collaborate with a grammy-nominated artist who had gotten a great reception from the critics for his work. i think she was chasing the critics, tbh.

my point is that i just don't think that there's this ~pure~ desire to create music and art (gurl was clearly pressed that she wasn't achieving any fame back when gaga was, and there wasn't nothing wrong with that). the real reason why lana's not going to quit is because she's just too hungry for fame and respect. She intentionally seeks out controversy, she's deliberately provocative and subversive. these are intentional acts, and i'm not convinced she does them ~purely for the art~. ha, she would never be able to give up all this to go back to making music on her laptop for herself
