I see the audiobook coming early in July only for Grammy noms. To me, Violet’s real release is Sept 28. So COCC’s release being Sept 5 makes more sense. And maybe this is why the audio forms of Violet will only be out in October, so the preorders for COCC will be out along with the release of the album on steaming?

When I saw the flanel shirt, it brought a couple of questions, but not about cultural appropriation, but much more about: who the fuck wears flanel in summer, in California?!? Isn’t she sweating like a pig in that?

And let’s not forget it’s her we’re talking about : she has a tendency of posting things once and thinking this is crystal clear (like not saying Sylvia was renamed, posting a snippet of it saying that HIADTFAWLMTH-BIHI is out January 8 or 9, or dropping COCC’s Name, but having us wondering if it was the possible name of the audiobook, which it wasn’t). She already gave us the release date, so I guess she doesn’t see the point of adding anything up until the preorder. August is likely to start teasing the new album. She wanted a small release all along, wanting a « surprise drop ». With Violet out and her minimalist plans, it would be fitting to start teasing the project not very long before its release. I understand what you mean. I reread the posts that some of you put out and your points were valid. It’s true that LFL and NFR and even HM didn’t have much controversy to talk about, unlike the « I wish I was dead already » misquote of the UV era, for example. But I wonder what controversy you would her to sing about (it’s really a genuine question, because the way I see how she is living these days, I wonder what could be controversial enough for her to sing that wouldn’t feel dishonest or forced).

I agree with you. To me, there are hints of saying FU to everyone on NFR: fresh out of fucks forever, I fucked up but Jesus, can a girl just do the best she can? I don’t think she held back anything on NFR, she just didn’t have anything controversial to write about. And anyways, I wouldn’t want her to write about « false controversy for the sake of it ». It would feel forced. A bit like when Madonna became « woke » with American Life and it not her best album. I don’t want a whole song being about « Fuck you guys, I don’t take shit from no one. »

BTD and Paradise don’t have any mis apps lyrically that I can recall. All of her other albums have some lines that aren’t perfect. But hey, you have your whole life to write your first album. Writing the other ones can be tricky. NFR does have some of the stories that I love the most though. HM had some of her strongest lyrics (The Blackest Day, Terrence, MTWBT...) and some that are a bit weaker like you mentioned (same with LFL). The Greatest is one of my top Lana songs and just the title of the new album gives me strong « The Greatest » vibes, so imagine how excited I am about it.

Yes, I read the posts and they do contain some valid points. I perhaps went too fast, made some shortcuts to express what I wanted, and probably didn’t stay on topic. I still don’t think she played it safe on NFR, lyrically speaking. Maybe she didn’t have anything to say that could be controversial. She sure didn’t feel angry during that period and some of her most controversial posts or songs seem to come from a lot of anger. But I don’t feel she held back anything on that album or wrote to please people. I’m curious for the lyrics on COCC, since she already told us some may not like what she says.

About the « safe » lyrics of NFR... each one of her albums is a chapter in her life. BTD is end of teenage, UV is early 20, HM is end of 20 to 30, LFL is her 30’s life crisis and NFR is mid-30. She always sang about what she was living at the moment and each of her records feels personal on that matter. You can’t expect her to sing about being a cocained Lolita who wants a daddy anymore because that’s not who she is anymore: she is in her 30s and made it, and she is coming closer in age being a mother than to act like a teenage. The themes she explored on UV and BTD are probably gone. On NFR, she is the same person she was on BTD, only grown up. She is still unapologetic, but maybe not that auto destructive anymore (and about her being a « good girl », go back and listen to Gramma on AKA: you have the essence of LDR: a good girl who feels too much and who is tempted to give in her to her demons: on NFR, she kinda remembers that and is back at that place). NFR is the album that screams: take me as I am and fuck off if you don’t like it, maybe more so than the ones that came before it. The album feels extremely sincere and I don’t think she toned down anything to please the crowd. The only album that don’t feel 100% « authentic » is LFL: Some songs are heartfelt (13 Beaches, In My Feelings, Heroin, Change, Get Free), while some others are written from « other perspectives » and don’t feel as « sincere », in a way (BPBP, GBA...). Also, she stated that NFR was inspired by singer-songwriter vibes from Laurel Canyon, and it’s exactly that: sincere, emotional, minimal production, incredible storytelling. You couldn’t have UV lyrics on that kind of production and call it « Laurel Canyon inspired ». I don’t know if that inspiration was intentional form day one or if it came along the way. I’m not sure what some here expect from her lyrics. To me, as long as the songs feel sincere and have beautiful imagery in the lyrics, they will be incredible LDR songs. I’m curious to hear what the last months brought to her lyricism, if we will feel her in a « raw » state of mind or not, especially knowing that the album was completed on a short period of time.

Audiobook contains the 14 (probably) longest poemsWritten book contains more than 30 poems (she had a lot of haikus that could make it to the book but would be too short for the album) The second book (Behind the Iron Gâtes) is a different project from Violet I don’t see why Violet’s multiple releases would interfere with COCC. The multiple releases of Violet are there to allow physical production and shipping. I also see the audiobook out on July 28 as a strategy to get it eligible for the Spoken-Word Album Grammy.

Simple outfit but she looks good

I am surprised that by 2021, Jack and her will have put out four projects together, which is astounding. I agree with most of what you said, maybe not as much about her lyrics being safe on NFR (three titles had fuck or bitch in them. I agree that she doesn’t sound angry on NFR and is fresh out of fucks forever). I read in what she said about the culture that she feels her voice doesn’t have its place. I think she may receive backlash as being « not a feminist », if she sings about being incomplete after a heartbreak. I expect to see her vulnerability also, like on Hope, Heroin and Patent Leather, to see that she is a fragile woman, battling with sadness / depression from time to time. I’ m not so sure there’ll be « big fuck you » moments like there were on UV, though I’d be fine with those too.
