It’s true she never said anything about the May 26 date. Plus we don’t know for sure what was the initial plans of LFL’s rollout. She did say that the Love leak forced her to begin the era earlier (she would have liked to put out that song in April if I’m right). But either than that, we don’t know for sure what was her original release date.

Based on the songs we heard so far, when it comes a piano-only ballad, Rick creates richer piano melodies than Jack. Don’t get me wrong: I love Jack’s production, but piano for piano, his songs (Hope, Love Song), are not as rich as Rick’s (Change, White Mustang, Bartender, and LFL and Summer Bummer - I think he got involved with the last two, with the piano).

Well, her stuff is now secured apparently. She teases the snippets, and all the leaks happened, in the NFR era, when the singles were sent to the steaming services. The tracklist was protected until she posted it on Insta. The only indication we got before that of song names was when we Shazamed the snippets a couple of days prior to the the tracklist announcement and it revealed the titles Love Song, California and Cinnamon Girl. There are no snippets to Shazam this time around, so that option is out of the picture. If her website gets under maintenance, this could be our best indicator of the era coming through, near the lead single, I guess?!?

I agree with you. I love NFR, it is in my top albums from her, but the title track is not my fave, probably because there are grander songs on the album, and we got used to grandeur and majesty when it comes to her title tracks. However, the songs snaps in its subtleties: the musical intro, the opening line, the chorus and the high notes at the end are all wow moments. The song hits me when I am with “man-childs” (which happened recently) and her “Goddamn” feels so fucking good to sing out loud. It’s an underrated gem.

She explained in an interview that Religion is, in fact, about her passion for singing, although it is easy to make it about a man. Anyways, I always saw her songs about “a moment in time”: we all moments of dark despair or incredible feeling of love for someone. It doesn’t mean that these feelings will last, but her songs are all about those moments.

She teased the title track late June and it was released on her YouTube channel by mid-July. Knowing that she scrapped the music video, I guess she wanted the title track to be the first single at first with a MV, but since she didn’t like it, HBTB became the first single. The more I think about it, the more I believe COCC will be a very “minimal” era when it comes to promo. One single very close to release (you have to give something to create some buzz around it), cover art and maybe a trailer and that’s it.

I don’t follow MGK or even Jesse Rutherford who she also had a collab with, but I wonder what these two are waiting to release those songs. MGK is releasing a new punk rock album this summer, so I doubt that the Lana song will be there. Didn’t I read somewhere that a Hotel Diablo deluxe version is on the way? And what about Jesse’s plans? Anyone has info on that?

I honestly blame it more on the general mindset of the US in general regarding the pandemic rather than her just being “stupid” or “selfish” or whatever. There is a feeling of extreme minimalisation of the virus at the moment and of its danger going on in the US (as well as in my province in Canada at the moment), probably due to the arrival of summer and our general tiredness of being locked down. Same happened with the Spanish flu, 100 years ago, with its second (and deadlier) wave, because people had had enough of being cautious.

I’ll sure be stoned to death, but I don’t care. I’ve seen Mélanie when she opened at Osheaga, a couple years ago, right after her first album and I was horrified by her whole creepy doll/ creepy circus/ Pennywise and Chucky had a child aesthetics. Haven’t heard anything else since, maybe she really is talented, but a collab with her is a no-no. I wasn’t against a collab with Ariana and well, it’s really not my cup of tea. A collab with Billie... I don’t know. I honestly am curious what she will pull off after the massive success of her first one.

Also: with Looking for America, she donated all the proceeds to charities, in the events of a US shooting last year. If the Sept 4-5 date is still on, it means that she was pretty much done with the record when she announced its title, or was about to (again, that is if there is a physical release as well).

About Interscope wanting to release all of her stuff, this is simply speculation. All major record companies tend to do so when a singer passes away, with the family giving their blessings. But maybe they would want to do it at the end of her contract, depending what are the terms (if she owns her music).

I think a lot of people here love demos and unreleased songs too much, when many of them are meh or just ok. It’s the FOMO factor or « The one that got away » idéalisation. Don’t get me wrong: some demos are really good and some leaks are excellent, but to brand almost each leak as « better than half of LFL or NFR » is often plain stupid. And about LFL, if she had released the demos as official songs like many wishes she had, that album would have been called a snooze fest, the same way HM was called that for being too dreamy.

Child choirs are perfect to make a song sound creepy AF.
