YES. lana is not a role model, she isn't here to tell you how to think or feel, she doesn't have to do anything 'right and correct' for you. she's simply an artist who's telling her life story and sharing her feelings. the whole think is so fucked-up because everybody is judging lana for feeling unhappy and thinking it would be much easier for her if she was dead. depression is a mental illness you can't control so a few 'pls lana stop glamorizing death you're so talented and have so much ahead of you!!!!1' sentences don't help her at all. if lana feels like she wants to live a wild life and die young, she has the right to. if she's scared of death, there is nothing wrong of it too. everybody has their own personal relationship with death and we can't tell anybody shit about it.

    smh.

Hum Sky Ferrari retweeted Frances but not Lana. I hope it's because she didn't see Lana's tweets, otherwise Night Time My Time is going right in the bin

I see "to glamorise" is the new "it" word nowadays. Yeah she sings about death a lot, yeah she may have liked the idea of dying young and free, at the top of your powers and fame in some songs. Y&B is filled with her fear of getting old and becoming unrecognized, aching and not beautiful anymore.  But fuck it, she is artist, she has her own artistic persona. She isnt politician to make some official statement for the country. Im sick of the fact how art is now supposed to be morally perfect, "healthy" and politically correct.

Loved the part where she was walking. She looked so beautiful and it was beautifully shot. Probably my favorite LDR video.

This is why I prefer video / radio interviews more than written articles - you never can be sure that artists really said this or that and in which context.

Maybe Lana just used an unfortunate choice of words, and the writer misrepresented / twisted her word (intentionally) to make this article more interesting ...

If Lindsay is reviewing it, Lana will be lucky to get anything over 4. But we all know that Pitchfork is going to give her a bad score no matter what, so why even bother about it?

It's just interesting how male rappers can make racist, homophobic, sexist or any other remark and get free pass for it. They can rap/sing about the most absurd and ridiculous things and barely ever catch flack for it.
Lana's music can be good as theirs, but she won't get away with it like they do.

And this oh she's inauthentic, she has stage persona bullshit is still the most ridiculous criticism here. Who is really authentic and genuine? Who doesn't have a stage persona? I understand why some may find Lana's act to be a bit over the top, but come on. When Video Games first came out in 2011, press acted like she was the first musician ever who developed new stage persona and new name.

I don't think you are. I personally adore that album, but there's quite a few fans who feel let down and dislike UV.

Personally, I believe your statements about UV are more applicable to BtD than UV. Lana is such a talented lyricist, yet I feel she abandoned this wonderful ability when writing for BtD. Don't get me wrong, there are some pretty good tracks on there (National Anthem, OTTR, Lolita, Blue Jeans), but I feel the album as a whole is a bit amateurish. I think she really stepped up here game for UV and I believe her fantastic lyricism shine through on the album, especially on tracks like Brooklyn Baby, Is This Happiness, Flipside and Old Money. :flutters:

Haha, my mother never really liked Lana that much. She thought the whole BTD album was just "drowsy" and "put her to sleep". But I showed her some UV songs last night and asked her to give me an honest opinion. She loved it. She'd always heard the Black Beauty demo version (b/c I fucking love that song lmao so i always played it...) and when I showed her the UV version she was all like "oh wow... this is gorgeous..."

I think my job here is done

first of all can we all not try to "diagnose" her based on a few words she's said in an interview
it's clear that she's lived a very eventful life and I think the fame is still very surreal for her. just a few years ago she was singing in bars and making music on her laptop, suddenly she's living in a mansion in LA. I don't think she sees herself as a celebrity, she sees herself as an ordinary person and when you see yourself like that , criticism can be very hard to take.
What she said about death was pretty alarming but I'm not worried about anything drastic happening. in my opinion she didn't mean it in a "I wanna kms" way, she meant it as more like "I wish I didn't live this type of life, I'd rather be dead". she idolizes people who took their life early and she seems to like the idea of dying young, but when it comes down to it, death is not beautiful, it's serious and tragic and I don't think she would do that. the worst I can see happening is that she stops making music for the public

“People say to the mentally ill, ‘You know so many people think the world of you.’ But when they don’t like themselves they don’t notice anything. They don’t care about what people think of them. When you hate yourself, whatever people say it doesn’t make sense. ‘Why do they like me? Why do they care about me?’ Because you don’t care about yourself at all.” - Richey Edwards

This interview made me really, really sad. But if I'm being honest, it doesn't surprise me all that much. What does surprise me, however, is how open she is being here. And depending on how you look at it, this can be a good or a bad thing. As a fan it's quite... uncomfortable in a way, because here I am admiring her voice, her talent, uniqueness, songwriting abilities meanwhile.... she just doesn't love herself as much as we expect her to. Remember what she said in a recent interview: 'it's just sad because they care and I just don't..' I do believe she's struggling. I genuinely think she is hurting. Just because she has a platform of fame now, some money in her pocket, a "very large family" and a lot of people around her, doesn't mean she isn't struggling. I wish her true happiness. I wish I could be a part of that but it looks like it's too much of a far stretch.

Also, the comments under that Guardian article really discouraged me. I mean.... really? Some of those people don't know what they're talking about. Hey, we can all have our opinions and it's fine if you think she's this way and that way or her music 'sucks' or whatever - okay, cool. Your problem, not mine, but blatantly disregarding her emotions and invalidating her struggles because she is famous? "poor little rich girl" is what they think. What people need to realize is that mental illness is just that: mental illness. It does not discriminate - when will people understand this? They don't get it, man. They don't get it

Imagine dinner at Lana's, you sitting there....Lana on the left, eating slowly as she looks into space, depressed, her hair immaculate, but dry tears on her face, Barrie to the right, long unwashed hair over his face, depressed, not eating, but staring into space as he writes poetry on paper without even looking at his pen, silence............what fun.

I actually feel quite guilty after I read this interview. If she doesn't like the fame, why does she release new music and why does she play so many concerts all over the world ?
I'm going to see her performing live for the second time in one week and how can I be able to ban the thought that she doesn't feel comfortable with what she's doing while I'm having one of the best times of my life ??
