I call feminism somehow sneaking its way into this topic by page six.

Honestly I didn't think the video was that bad. I didn't see it as "glamorizing" rape. The video is disturbing, but it is child's play compared to some rape scenes in movies and tv shows. Yes it had artsy angles and slow mo but I still can't see how it is glamorizing rape. Rape is a horrible, terrible thing and while Lana has definitely done/said some questionable things, I doubt she would ever promote rape and/or rape culture. I think this is being blown out of the water, but what's new?

I expected something so much worse from your comments... I'm glad I was wrong.
I LOVE the look of the sorta emo girl sitting next to the baloons. Beautiful. The scene with women trashing shit up was also good.

C'mon Manson camp, don't try to deny it.

Being associated with Manson and all, the German name Sturmgruppe sounded kinda vaguely Nazi to me. Not surprisingly I was right. Sturmgruppe means something like "assault group". Divisions of a battalion of Luftwaffe paratroopers were called "sturmgruppen".

Lana's face broke my heart but it's something I haven't seen of Lana so I'm happy about that and OMG Lana should totally take up acting! Like, not just for music videos. Or do more music films like Tropico, but with more acting. She's so good!

Ok, I'm a lurker, but I have to say I hope this topic will go on for a good while, because it's much more amusing than the video itself. People starting debates, arguing about Evil Feminists, glamorizing rape, anti-rape message and other shit over an ordinary sexploitation video which can be easily included in any B-horror movie and watched just for fun...well, just go on. I love some good High Drama For No Reason.
    As for video...well, this:

Honestly this is mild for eli Roth the man who made the hostel movies.... I believe lana agreed to do this because of its artist purpose. And somwhere in all the violence There's a positive message.. Its ment to shock you and make you be like "wow this is happening to people" just my 2 cents though (:

Her scene reminded me of a horror movie and she looks really good in such a rough scene. The rest is whatever.

Meh, whatever. It's crazy how this topic has exploded. Obviously those of you who are saying it glamorizes rape or is in bad taste are overlooking something.

NOBODY HYPED THIS UP. NOT LANA, NOT THE DIRECTOR.

The only reason people found it was because the director mentioned it briefly in an interview and crazy Lana fans scoured the internet for it.

As I said before.. This is JUST A VIDEO. Not real life, not a retelling of true events.

Sure it looks like she got raped... That was the point of the scene. The whole video is chaos and anarchy and all around bad things. So fucking what? People do this stuff in movies ALL THE TIME. It's just creative expression. Nothing about it glamorizes rape.

Manson's nothing but a try hard. I have an interview with him from a black metal magazine where he tries to play up the idea that he's as one with the church burning, brain eating satanists. He's always been at the cutting edge of early eighties transgressive art.

I don't think it is pro rape. IMO it depicts various forms of violence. The shooter scene reminded me of Anders Behring Breivik though.

Yep, some parts were taken from the "No Reflection" video by Manson and the one with the blurred woman in  a uniform is also very Manson-esque, not sure if it's from Mobscene or something, but definitly could be from a video by him.

Funny how depicting something and glamourising it is considered the same by some persons. Does this mean "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" is also doing this?
I can understand that some things Lana does are controversial. her statement on feminism. The Ultraviolence lines.
But this video isn't glamourising anything at all, in contrast, the horror of the victim is the most convincing display of emotion Lana ever did in a video. It is not supposed to be fun and cool and it's not looking like this. It looks painful and terrible. She screams, she tries to fight back, she's crying. There is nothing sexy about it. So I don't get where the assumption of the glorification comes from. And the slowmow-parts .. they are ALL OVER THE VIDEO,also during the "No Reflection" musicvideo parts, so they were not intentionally designed for the rape scene.
And apart from this we don't even know the complete clip.

The only thing disturbing is people on Tumblr captioning gifs and edits of a rape scene with Lana's questionable lyrics.

Hello angry & opinionated human beings.

I can only speak for myself, so I will. Being raped is no fun. I've had experience with that. I always have hated when people want to mask the problem of rape & sexual abuse. For a long time I felt like "I was the only one who knew how it felt". That whole "you were asking for it" argument..  As I got older and submersed myself into darker art forms that showcase all sides of the human psyche & human behaviors, I came to an understanding. It's a very real, human experience not to be portrayed like a "Lifetime special". There has been some comfort in seeing rape portrayed as real as possible, because it allows people who have never been through that situation to gain some understanding and compassion towards people who have gone through it. I've read autobiographies of people describing how they were raped or abused, I've spoken to people who went through it. Bonding with others helped heal my pain. I became unashamed. I wasn't at fault. By being ashamed about sharing my past, I felt that put me at fault. I wasn't making myself available to other people who need to know they are not alone/at fault. Sharing an experience doesn't glorify that experience, it humanizes it for others to relate to it. Relating to a rape scene shouldn't be a shameful thing. It's staring a problem in the face and saying something about it. I commend actors who want to portray rape scenes properly. Any artist who makes something ugly instead of making something perfect & beautiful. The ones who tell the scary stories w/o endings. It should make you feel something. Pain, confusion, anger, fear, etc. but not towards the actors & people involved in creating the art. Just towards the action itself. I once had a teacher in cultural anthropology who refused to believe that our predecessors could have also been rapists. She claimed that rape was a new fangled action, that came along more recently in the history of humans. That kind of thinking insulted me a bit, because I feel like rape is very common, but also so frowned upon, it is silenced throughout history. If you silence an artist from conveying something that has influenced them, you are diluting the truth. Rape is real, and it shouldn't be something we want to close our eyes, ears, and hearts from because it is wrong. That is the wrong attitude to have. We should be discussing it. We should be able to look at a video like this one and be able to learn from it. Realize that someone needs to talk about it, or at least have an outlet to express their thoughts on it.

This pretty much covers my feelings, and I'm enjoying the discussion here. I don't think the clip is inherently pro- or anti-rape, and I don't think any reaction to 'transgressive' art is wrong. It's meant to elicit strong reaction, but that doesn't mean people are being out of line by having those strong (negative) reactions.

Disturbing and sick. I am a horror/exploitation buff and quite like it.
Never was much into Marilyn Manson though.

Excuse me for my ignorance but. Can anyone tell me how the video's(atleast Lana's scene) considered "pro-rape"? I mean I kind of felt bad for Lana and her character during the scene and wanted to kill the guy. So I don't see it as glamorizing rape cause I myself didn't feel the video was "hot". If anything, we were meant to feel sorry for the girl.

The only glamorous thing I saw was the camera angles and HD'ness, slow-motion effects and stuff but not the rape scene.

    Can anyone enlighten me?
