Ain't nothing wrong with Low-fi though? NFR is not Low-fi at all, to a certain extent maybe UV was. But what I dislike about NFR above all is how sloppy the end result was with a lot of songs. How tinny the piano sounds, how it lacks bass, how a lot of amateur-ish mistakes transpired in the mastering of the record, there are people that think it adds to the so called "charm" of the record, making it more "organic". I just feel like it makes a lot of the songs have this demo/unfinished "quality" to them.
 
Low-fi does certainly not equal cheap.
 
Also, I'd like to add that Lonerism is a Low-fi piece of art, literally one of the best, if not the best, psychedelic album released this decade.

I very much feel that, I hope Lana gets her hearing abilities back ASAP. This new production/mastering approach is literally frightening, I mean for someone that claimed to spend months producing and mastering records, this is quite unbelievable.
 
I get that she wanted to make something lighter, more moody (?), but it literally sounds like bunch of demos back and front.
 
The attention to detail was left for dead in a ditch. 
 
Is there any hope for Lana to collab with someone else, maybe someone new? Like our Lord and saviour Kevin Parker?

Cultural elitism doesnt make for a good debating argument, yet it showcases a problematic way to look other people at. Don't really see the point on taking what should be a healthy, funny discussion towards music, to a series of nonsense, personal attacks within the forum members. I really hope that nobody has to start keeping their legitimate views to themselves, as long as they are respectfully exposed, because of fearing being judged like this. Here's a thing Jared, all lot of people think the production on NFR is literally the most lackluster and bland of all her albums. You guys can try to convince yourself that the production/mastering amateur mistakes were intentional and add to the so called "charm" of the record, but it ain't it. Jack is not the musical genius you make out to be, and that's that.
 
Here's another too, accolades don't mean crap. Critics echo one another, and this happen to be Lana's least controversial album to date and we're past the days of Lana being considered a manufactured no talent Daddie's little girl. People (even her harshest critics) now consider her an interesting artist. 1+1 always equals 2.

You guys need to get over your sensitive selves and stop selectively clutching your pearls. It all comes down to personal taste. I still very much consider myself a fan even though I think her last two records have been really lackluster (in different ways, but still very lackluster!). NFR is obviously a great record, and I'm glad she's finally got good reviews, but it doesn't change how much this record doesn't do anything to me. I have the right to regurgitate the same comment if I feel like it, just like there are people on this sub that basically have nothing but praise for this record, and do just like I do on a daily basis (and good for them honestly!). 
Lana ain't no diety, not everything she does is going to please everyone, and it's honestly a good thing. She's not immune to criticism.

Hmm interesting, reading interviews from 2014 and Dan and Lana seemed to have quite opposite opinions about the direction of her music, whereas reading recent interviews "Oh Jack I love the chords here!!1!" "Der ok Lana". Jack is a yes man, Dan was more of a visionnaire.

And you 3 Jack stans need to realize not everyone is onboard with what Lana went for (and is apparently still going for for Wet Hot American Summer), no matter how much you keep mentioning Pitchfork reviews and Metacritic scores.

If you're a casual fan you're probably not listening closely. Critics are hardly going to be listening to Lana's album on repeat at every part of the day at full volume. The reason we hear it is because we're rabid fans who obsess over these details (as I hope we should - we're fans on LANAboards). I had a quick skip through and these are some of the things I heard (some with timestamps so you can find them quickly)

This is so sloppy the whole thing might be style choice. Throughout the opening you can hear things moving, lips smacking etc.
0:18 – 0:22: Lips moving

0:28: This is very obviously a different take with clearer vocals.
1:41 – After “Kerosine” you can hear a case or something shift in the background

Perfect because it has totally different production.

0:27: Instrumental loop drops in volume and then restarts noticeably.
1:04 – On ‘Oh, be my once in a lifetime’, the mic placement is closer to her, which causes the vocal line to be louder. This doesn’t happen in the second chorus, but the bass is boosted higher.
 
How to Disappear
0:07 onwwards: The instruments are crackling and peaking slightly on the bass. Maybe it’s a . . . choice.
0:51: The microphone peaks and her voice whistles (from no hi pass filter) on the word ‘to’
2:37: The mixing is bad. The vocals are too quiet compared to the first portion of the song, now with very loud backing.

Fine I guess, but would you really consider this as well produced as the rest of the album. You can hear lip smacks and the mouth opening and there’s hiss but they proudly did this in one take . . .
 
At the end of the day, you can clearly hear these nitpicks. They're nitpicks, but they're there, and you look like a fool for saying that they don't exist simply because they do. I love love LOVE NFR! but it's undeniable that 
 
HOWEVER, if you're not an audiophile or you're not consistently listening to it with high quality headphones, you would never pick up on these. This shit happens all the time across every genre - at the end of Florence + The Machine's 'What the Water Gave Me' you can hear someone moving their drumsticks, you can hear someone cough in the back of Madonna's 'Don't Cry for Me Argentina', on The Little Mermaid legacy collection random instrumental fades come up here and there.
 
It's disappointing when simple mistakes like this happen since to me, it sounds like someone hasn't given it a proper listen with the same care that's been put into making it. Maybe it's a stylistic choice, and a result of the album being made quickly, but frankly I'm not interested in having this lack of attention again on White Hot Forever simple because I like cleaner sounding records. Jack is a talented musician and will go down as a modern legend, and NFR! deserves the praise buttt
 
Yes, here here. How can anyone claim that NFR is more cohesive than HM when its music was produced by at least three different people! TNBAR has the same textual and sonic patches as Heroin and 13 Beaches. Bartender is beautiful but fuckin' random. Doin' Time is super hot but from like, literally another planet. Ultraviolence is more cohesive but sonically HM has it going on from start to end.

It's basically the same with people that constantly praise this record, call it a magnum opus (or whatever) and are not open to the fact that not every fan praise the crap out it though? Ok, werk.

Where does this crap about Dan Auerbach being a macho man comes from? Last time I checked he literally fought for Lana to release Ultraviolence against execs at Interscope?? They both had nothing but good thing to say about each other from that time period. Sometimes having a little bit of a challenge in the studio is good for you, not always having a yes man agreeing with your every decisions. 
You're just pissed because Dan was actually able to create something Jack did not on NFR: an intricate, atmospheric and cohesive soundscape.

I honestly cannot with the person that said that both Dan Auerbach and Rick Ruben are washed up like...
 
They might be washed up to you, but at least they don't put (alleged) amateur-ish mistakes/flaws make the final cut to add so call "charm" to a track (or to a certain extent: a whole album).
