Norman Fucking Rockwell - Post-Release Discussion Thread + Poll
sjatib replied to Elle's topic in Post-Release Threads
I don't really think the cover sounds too cinematic -very under Lana's standards on that dept., at least-, or not too much to sound out of place on NFR. It's actually the kind of big but down to earth sound I thought we were going to get when we first heard the snippets from Love Song ("In your car", by that times) and California itself, and both songs ended up being a big dissapointment to me. I think that the message and the sonority of California fit much more to a kind of ballad sound, and hearing it as a rock track sounded quite forced for me, which is one of the reasons I dislike that track. Like, I'd quite prefered it sounding as a beautiful and honest redemption song (with a production way more cared about than the one that we ended up getting), a bit cinematic maybe, but not bombastic or barroque, lets say.Something in the vein of how MAC sounds, maybe. That would have done for a more cohesive album, also ( I think that California is with Doin Time the song that's the most out of place of NFR, in sound terms). After listening to this guys cover, I got to think that California could work incredibly as a gospel song. Maybe someday someone will give us that kind of cover, I'd truly love to hear it! -
If she gets the nomination and then releases this, the Grammy Academy will take it as a profound unforgivable offense, as they should. She can better keep the pretending-to-play-the-piano-walking-through-the-garden videos for herself (talking for me, no offense to any of you expecting for them to be released xd). Though I also want to see if Bambi will appear again!

Just found this cover of California and felt that the arrangement is quite more elegant and meticulous than the original version. I actually like how it sounds, and the original version doesn't actually do anything for me, so wanted to share it here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YL_DGjMxbq4 -

Cultural elitism doesnt make for a good debating argument, yet it showcases a problematic way to look other people at. Don't really see the point on taking what should be a healthy, funny discussion towards music, to a series of nonsense, personal attacks within the forum members. I really hope that nobody has to start keeping their legitimate views to themselves, as long as they are respectfully exposed, because of fearing being judged like this. Let's keep the dialogue enjoyable for all. -

You are the Monica Geller of production, and I'm worried that I relate to you a lot! -

That's kind of what 13 Beaches and some other songs on LFL made me feel (the ones that had an aesthetic consistency on the album -13 Beaches, Heroin, WTWWATW, etc.´), but with BAR I felt that the attempt to develop that vision was failing. Also I hoped that on the new version it would have been reworked on a way that I would like, but it just didn't happen. -

I It's funny, cause these two things are maybe the ones that make me cringe the most about the song xd Thank you for the feedback, it's a very nice thing to discuss approachs to music without it becoming some kind of nonsense conflict! -

I love this site because I can read views like this one towards songs which I feel absolutely the opposite about. I've thought, since the demo -which I liked better than the final version- that it's one of her worst released songs ever (the official version being, from my view, a strong contender for her worst released song ever). What are the things that make you love it, instead? Curious to know and listen to it again from another point of view. -

If this ends up being true -although it truly seems like a fan-started rumour-, I'll be happy for her finally getting recognition, but also so fucking upset about the critics having ghosted all her previous work, which I think she's put quite more effort in than she has on NFR. -

All of the boys tell me lies But you torture them to get their answers clear I pretend that I can't 't hear... -
Outfits, shows and performances. Her concerts by that time were somehow hypnotising, she just didn't seem to be from this world. Also her first dates from 2017 (Oya, Manchester, London, etc.).

Ironically, I think that after what NFR was lyric-wise, if the critics called her "the best next American songwriter" regarding her writing on the album, a poetry book wouldn't make any damage to her artistic image. Even I, that found her poems cringy and weak, think that they are miles better than anything that she wrote for NFR (except maybe Hope).

Lana and Jack to perform/appear at the Grammy Museum (Oct 13)
sjatib replied to ilovetati's topic in Appearances
Each show she does I'm more convinced about her hating performing. I don't have a problem with what happened during For free - I relate a lot to the fact of suddenly disconnecting from reality, and think that in her case she just got abducted by the music; actually saw that as a cute moment-, but the backtracks on the most basic songs, and in the most basic venues are incredibly embarrasing. I have never had the chance to see her performing live, but I'm sure I wouldn't waste a cent on doing that right now. I enjoy her music on a very deep level, and maybe it's just a fact that live performances aren't her thing, so there shouldn't be much to expect from them either. -

I'm shocked at how is she looking again in terms of face fillers. I thought it couldn't get worse after the Gucci Guilty promo, and was relieved that she started looking better some months after, but she's now even more exaggerated in that dep.. -

This show seems to have been one of her most special ones till date. Any chance she may have recorded it for a DVD? -

Yesterday I was thinking it's her worst tour by far. Can't understand what she's going for with this level of mediocrity, never seen something as this on other artists I follow. -

Hey Why there's no one discussing tonights show? -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2M7MSFbTV8o Hey Is it me or she playbacked TWICE the whole chorus of the song?

Lana's keyboard player posted on his stories the editing process of a pro recording from her duet with Joan Baez. Maybe we can expect some pro live videos!

Didn't actually remember which show she talked about... So maybe she has prepared a new ultra backtracked version for Blue Jeans and Born to die... Can't wait to hear them!
