I was thinking about them today. Like, remember when she posted the Chelsea Hotel video on Gaga's birthday? It seems like that song means a lot for Lana, maybe it reminds her of her "friendship" with Stefani. I don't want to compare Leonard's songwriting skills with Lana's, but, there are so many similarities between CHNo2 and So Legit. The melancholy about New York ("And those were the reasons, and that was New York" / "What happened to Brooklyn? What happened to New York?"), both were left by celebrities ("While the limousines wait in the streets [...] You got away, didn't you baby? You just turned your back on the crowd" / "How the fuck would you switch it up and then replace me?") and both feel less than them ("You told me again you preferred handsome men" / "Tell me was it 'cause I wasn't platinum and jewels?
That perhaps you thought I was a little bit even uncool"). This may be kind of fetched, but everything is possible in Lana's world.   P.S.: Oh, and they're both talking about a ~musical relationship~. "We are ugly but we have the music" / "What happened to our scene? [...] What happened to punk rock?". The "I don't even think of you that often" at the end tho

This is so depressing. But well, she doesn't care about money/fame/#1s anymore... she wants to be free and happy. Literally can't wait for her new music, I don't care if it's released in 2016 or 2020.

Wow, lots of great discussion and points raised here. Thanks! Just what I was hoping for.

I meant to say that we don't necessarily *have* to have an "Ultraviolence Tour;" it could just be another tour in general. I was under the impression that the "Paradise Tour" had pretty much ended late last year. I think one thing that marked the end of that "era" was the band she used for live concerts. For BTD/Paradise songs, she almost always had a live string quartet along with the rest of the band, since those songs were string-heavy. Since she started performing some of the UV songs, the string quartet disappeared, and for the songs that used strings, she used pre-recorded tracks (e.g. the beginning of "Born To Die"). Other songs, like "National Anthem," they rearranged where they didn't need the string sounds.
So you're figuring that on her next tour, she'll perform more songs from Ultraviolence and less from the rest. That's certainly plausible.
Do you think an EP is likely?
That would make a for a good concert! I wonder if she'll still do "National Anthem," since that seems to be her go-to ending song. "Ride" might disappear. "Video Games" and "Summertime Sadness" are like staple songs for her; those will probably always be there, and probably "Born To Die" as well. Some of the other songs she still does now, like "Blue Jeans," "Cola," and "Body Electric" may fall away and be replaced with more UV songs.
Awww, I like "Young and Beautiful!" It's actually my favorite LDR song. But she' hasn't performed that lately, so I think that one's already pretty much gone. Maybe she'll do some smaller venue performances again, like the Amoeba, to gain confidence in some of the UV songs she hasn't performed live yet. I'd like to see "Brooklyn Baby" and "Black Beauty" (even though the latter is a bonus track) be added to her live set. I'd also love to see "Flipside" and "Is This Happiness," but those are also bonus tracks and not likely to appear. One can hope, though!

Well, UV is still new, and as some have pointed out, she seems to still be doing the Paradise Tour, despite the change in instrumentation. Perhaps she's doing a slow transition...

I'm with you there! I like UV, but I like the style of BTD/Paradise better myself. And I'm sure there are others out there as well who feel the same way, and Lana knows that, which is why she'll continue to mix in her old songs along with UV songs (and future new album songs) as long as she performs live.
    Perhaps.
What's interesting is that she has done more UV songs outside of the US, like FMWUTTT.
As I mentioned above, I think songs like "Cola," "Body Electric," and "Ride" will eventually disappear. Someone else cited "Carmen" and "Million Dollar Man" as well.

I get what you mean, you're very smart and yeah, you're right. But, idk, look at Madonna. On her last world tour, she used to perform all the songs from MDNA and her old mega hits such as "Vogue", "Like a Prayer", etc. Why? Well, those are some of her biggest hits and the audience love them! But it was the MDNA Tour so she had to perform songs from that album. This year, Lana had this mixture between the Paradise and Ultraviolence Tour, but now it's time for the ~official~ UV Tour. She can sing, I don't know, 10/11 songs from UV and "Video Games" (obviously), "Born to Die", "Ride", "Summertime Sadness", and idk a cover! That would be awesome.

Well, it's time to practice UV tracks! So they can get better and better with every show. Even though I love these songs... it's time to say goodbye to "Million Dollar Man", "Carmen", "Young and Beautiful" (please!!!!!!) and "Cola".

    Hey everyone,

I apologize if a similar topic to this is around, but I wasn't able to find it. It has come up during some of the "Shows" threads, but I thought perhaps it deserves its own thread.

A lot of people have been discussing disappointment at how Lana hasn't been singing more Ultraviolence songs during her recent concerts. I know "Shades of Cool" was debuted live at Hollywood Forever on October 18. For the most part, though, she has generally only sung about 4 or 5 UV songs, and the rest have been from Born To Die and Paradise (and the occasional cover).

Here's what I have to say about that:

    So what?

I'm probably going to get flamed for this... But let's think about it. Pretty much any artist you see will perform both older and newer songs when they give a concert. We're not all going to go to every single LDR concert, and she knows that, just like any other artist. For example, I've seen Weird Al in concert 4 times, the first time being 1997 or 98, and every single time, he has sung either "Fat" or "Eat It" (or both), despite those being among his older hits. Why? Because the fans like them! He's trying to appeal to the older and newer fans alike, and to those who like his older music and his newer music. Of course, LDR doesn't have as many albums out and hasn't been around as long, but she still knows that there are people who attend her concerts who LOVE the Born To Die and Paradise music just as much, if not moreso, than the Ultraviolence music. And, of course, there are those who like the UV music better. My point is that she wants to appeal to as much of her audience as she can. There's nothing that says she has to do an "Ultraviolence Tour" in which she ONLY sings UV songs. I'd bet that if she's still performing live 20 years from now, she'll still sing "Video Games" at every concert. Why? Because there will be people who WANT to hear it.

Some have also said that her set list is boring, because it is largely unchanged. There's a reason for that, too: If an artist performs more-or-less the same songs each time, the songs will only get better and better. They can also make subtle changes in notes, durations, and even lyrics, without throwing off the rest of the band. They're just that comfortable with the music that they can handle little alterations without any problem. And of course, Lana herself won't forget the words to a song she's sung 1000 times, right?

    Discussion welcome!

Well I'm looking forward to getting to know the boy behind the yasssss, so let's get started

  17. PARADIXO liked a post in a topic by spookytanooki in To anyone who thinks Gods and Monsters was a bad song choice in Freakshow
Definitely a little messy, but here is my interpretation of the lyrics in relation to the show

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the land of Gods and Monsters

[The land of gods and monsters is literally just the world]

    I was an Angel
Living in the garden of evil

[The garden of evil represents the freakshow, and Elsa thinks that she is a star, and a normal person, living among monsters. Hence, she's an angel]

Screwed up, scared, doing anything that I needed
    Shining like a fiery beacon

[Again, Elsa thinks she's a star. She's thinks she shines brighter than anyone else, and she is willing to do whatever it takes to become a star in everyone else's eyes]

You got that medicine I need
Fame, Liquor, Love give it to me slowly

[This is about the stranger that Esmerelda speaks about. She tells Elsa that he is going to make her a star]

Put your hands on my waist, do it softly
Me and God, we don't get along so now I sing

[Her life is a mess. She isn't getting what she wants, and she believes that God has abandoned her. She, herself is a "freak" because she is missing the bottom half of her legs, as seen in the first episode. "so now I sing," could just be a transition into the chorus, but it also makes sense that she sings to prove her worth to the world, and that she isn't a freak, and that she is better than everyone else in the show]

No one's gonna take my soul away

[This line, to me, kind of seems to steer away from the rest of the song, and instead, references Edward Mordrake. He is said to come and steal the souls of carnies if anyone performs on Halloween, which Elsa decides to do by singing this song]

    I'm living like Jim Morrison

[Everybody just shut up about this line. It's one thing to change one word, but changing an entire name in the song is a bit more difficult. Additionally, it is an anachronism. Every performance in this show is an anachronism. And anachronisms have already shown up, and will continue showing up thru the entire show. For example, Pepper is a member of the freakshow 12 years before Asylum happens, which makes no sense because Pepper was living at home, and was put in the asylum for allegedly killing her sister's baby, and there is no way that could happen if she was in the freak show. Anachronism. Get used to it.]

Headed towards a messed up holiday
Motel sprees sprees and I'm singing
'Oh yeah give it to me this is heaven, what I truly
    Want'

[she wants to escape. She wants to abandon the freak show and become her own act]

    It's innocence lost
    Innocence lost

[This obviously doesn't fit in so well with the theme, but the lost innocence could be her leaving the freak show, and destroying the lives of all the other freaks]

In the land of Gods and Monsters
    I was an Angel
    Looking to get hit hard

[she knows that the freak show is a lost cause. When she is looking to get hit hard, she is talking about the pain when she realizes that she is essentially talentless next to Dot and Bette's act]

Like a groupie incognito posing as a real singer
    Life imitates art

[Pretty self-explanatory. She acts like she is famous and glamorous, but she has no actual fans or recognition]

You got that medicine I need
Dope, shoot it up, straight to the heart please

[still talking about the stranger and fame]

I don't really wanna know what's good for me

[What's good for her is to give up her dream, but that's not what she wants to hear. She is determined to be famous]

God's dead, I said 'baby that's alright with me'

[God's dead. Her fate is in her own hands]

When you talk it's like a movie and you're making me
    Crazy -
    Cause life imitates art

[i think this references herself. She wants the world to feel this way about her]

If I get a little prettier can I be your baby?
You tell me, "life isn't that hard"

[Half about the stranger, half about the world. She's asking that if she were different, could she be famous]

This thread is basically going to be a page to dump all my LDR-esque digital pieces so I can keep track and get more inspiration. CC would be great + any new ideas you've got, shoot 'em my way. In the month of the disappearance of the Malaysian airline, Lady Gaga's GUY video featured a brunette phoenix falling from the sky, before being resurrected as a blonde in Hollywood. At the same time, Lana Del Rey was photographed diving into the waters of Marina Del Rey for her "West Coast" video.

Ingmar Bergman's Persona (1966) is the story of two girls, one blonde, one brunette, who in reality are only one girl. Miley Cyrus' Hannah Montana (2006) is the story of one girl who masquerades as two girls, Hannah Montana and Miley Stewart. Gaga and Lana are likewise two hemispheres of a single archetypal feminine principle; one which directs itself outward into phenomenal play (being "born this way" and fashionable), one which directs itself inward into melancholy reflection (dye your hair a darker shade, to suit the mood of your soul). Only one of these personae can be So Legit.

Therefore, whenever Gaga goes brunette, it only figures that she would then start to mimic her brunette alter-ego.

It's disgusting that people think she's lying because she still worked with him. Does that mean that women in abusive relationships weren't really abused because they were still in a relationship with that person? Does it mean that children who are molested by their parents are lying about it because hey, they didn't tell anyone about it when it happened. As someone who has experienced sexual, emotional and physical abuse I find it disgusting that y'all think she's lying about any of this. It seems that anytime a woman speaks up about past abuse she's labeled a liar or a gold digger or has some sort of alternative motive. Maybe Kesha finally hit a breaking point in her life where should couldn't hold it back anymore. Maybe she has slowly tried to come forward about it over the years but didn't have the strength until now. She's openly tried to get out of contract with him for years, have you ever wondered why? I can't help but to feel anything but heartbreak for Kesha. I know what it's like to have people tell you you're lying about your abuse and your rape. I was raped and abused by an ex boyfriend. The rape was seen as a lie because we were dating and apparently screaming "no" "get off of me" "stop it" "please I'm begging you to stop" "I don't want to do it" "get off now" is consent if you're already in a relationship and the abuse was seen as a lie because I was afraid to talk about it while we were still together, it took me months to even speak about it. I lost friends over it because "if it had happened I would've called the cops". It's fucking hard to call the cops when you fear for your life. When someone who "loves you" is able to do these really awful things to you, you fear what they'll do if they hate you. Same with Kesha, when someone is supposed to build you this amazing career and be supportive of you and your work but realistically controls every aspect of your life it's hard to get away from them. Kesha could have been in fear of what Luke could do to her if she did tell. I'm proud of her for coming forward about this. I think abuse in the entertainment industry is something society completely ignores. Look at how many women in the business stepped forward decades after their abuse, is it really that hard to think it could happen to Kesha? I honestly think a lot of people disbelieve Kesha because of what the media portrays her as (overly sexual, alcoholic, drug addict, party girl) but really, all of those actions are common for victims of abuse. I think everyone needs to shut the fuck up with their conspiracies or whatever negative shit they have to say about her. The way people just casually call her a liar is exactly why so many victims of abuse are afraid to speak up about it. The worse thing you can do to a victim of abuse is to call them a liar and act like anything that did happen was their fault.
