I thought that there wasn't this thread

Well what to say ... I love Radiohead ... they are one of the bands that I love ever! Create an atmosphere of fear, amazing!

My favorite albums are, of course, In Rainbows, The Bends and OK Computer, though the various Pablo Honey and Kid A I'm not hurt!

Someone also follows the project that made Thom with Flea, bassist of RHCP? (the Atoms for Peace)

Of course, I fully agree with your thoughts I had stated only that ... because being a kid (I'm 16) I do not see how all those who follow the masses.

However, you are right, Lana, now, is a "character" of trendy, and as such many teenagers follow her, such as it was Lady Gaga a few years ago. The potential has them, of course ... like the style. But now define icon is too high, how to deal with this mat  ter. It is only from 2-3 years that has emerged ... let's give it a bit 'of time, come on. XD

About Jeff Buckley: Ok did successfully with only one album, but we can say with all honesty (and without taking away anything to Lana) that Jeff came from another world ... it was a real talent, a "child prodigy" as Jim Morrison, for example ...

However, their, towards the end of the year, will release a new album, dedicated to their friend Richard Wright (as well as their keyboard player) who died in 2008.     I think it will come out crap, but we must not forget that they are still the Pink Floyd (although it lacks Roger Waters    that does not seem to want to cooperate)

Whenever I talk about Lana or mention her this is the reaction I get: 'Lana who?Is that a band?' or 'Yeah, the girl who sings Summertime Sadness'

One of the main aspects of an icon has to be instant recognition, and while Lana's been getting quite famous recently, she isn't that much known as an artist since she's new in the business (I know she's been around for ages, don't start with that).

So I think Lana's not an icon YET, but she's to become one if she keeps making this wonderful music.

I'm seeing people saying that it's not too early to call Lana iconic, but I think they're entirely wrong. To be an icon, you have to represent something and longevity is apart of that. Of course Lana represents the "indie" or "hipster" scene now, but if in 5 years and you say Lana Del Rey and nobody knows what you're talking about, then she's not iconic. It doesn't matter how many albums you put out, because someone mentioned an artist putting out only one album, because if you make a statement with that one album and represent a generation or a part of a generation, then you're an icon. Because that's what an icon is, representing something, and the kind of icon that we're discussing is a pop culture icon so you have to define a generation, like Madonna, Micheal Jackson, Britney Spears. So, yes, it is too early to say whether or not Lana is an icon, because we don't know how she has impacted today's culture in the grand scheme of things.

Okay, now...Let me first say that I think it's nice that you participated and all and I know you obviously did it for the fun of being part of this...but you're not a good singer. You hit some really nice notes here and there but overall it's just not good.

Finally! The 3rd season of the Karaoke Contest is about to start.
Are you all excited? I know, me too!

We might have a bit of delay today, because obviously some contestants couldn't get their shit together and PM me their entries in time or didn't even bother to send them at all, lol. Once the ultimate deadline is over, I'll post the entries. Also, could some mod be so kind and move this to the contest section? Thx in advance.

Anyway...I'm ULTRAVIOLENCE and me and the amazing @ will be your hosts tonight!
As you can see in the banner above the 14 contestants were asked to cover one of their favourite songs. Not too difficult, isn't it? However, picking one of your favourite songs might reveal itself as a bit tricky, since that particular song you've chosen to sing might end up impossible for you to sing. Surprisingly, there really isn't a lot of Lana present in this round, which is good since she's supposed to appear somewhere close to the end (saving the best for the last! ).

To my surprise, yes I was indeed surprised by that, all of the contestants did a decent job on their covers and they're all very different from each other. Lots of different artists, different styles...

But before I end up having three pages of blah I should start telling you how things will work out this season.
This season we have 14 contestants participating in this competion. The best case would be to have 12 rounds with one-two elimination per round. I'll ask the voters to take their time to listen to each submission and vote for their THREE favourite entries. There will be 72 hours to vote each round. Since there is no option to close the poll automatically it'll take at least 72 hours...as soon as I can arrive. The contestant, whose entry has reached the least amount of votes will be eliminated and his/her identity will be revealed. He/she won't be able return for the rest of the season. Another thing I'd like the voters to do is to actually review the entries and to tell us why you think contestant X, Y and Z did the best jobs. I think it's very important for the contestants to see the critique given by other LB members in order for them to know how they can improve during the next round. Also, if no one comments this will be a boring-ass and shitty contest.

That said, I'd like to pass the word onto my co-host @.

That's fair enough. My point was more that her fanbase is almost exclusively teens and she will have to reach out to a broader range of people to be iconic.

See, I think this will be what makes her iconic. She will be iconic for doing things her own way and still appealing to the masses. She doesn't need the radio (in fact, I think her not being in people's faces constant is really appealing in general and keeps her fresh when people do hear her name) or to conform to her producers to reign people in. She's getting it off talent alone.
  18. Gecko liked a post in a topic by Anthem in Discussion: Is Lana an ICON?
Except s/he doesn't, especially with the first bit. If Lana quit music today no one would remember her or care in a few years time. Her fanbase is largely made up of teen aged kids who just follow whatever is popular and as soon as that's not Lana they'll move on to someone else they think is "new" and "unique". She needs more time making music and being recognized by a critical and mature crowd for it to really be long standing and iconic. I think she needs more good-quality albums out as well to prove that she has staying power.

With that said, I think she has every bit of potential to become an icon. I think she's been pretty influential in terms of style so far and she's been getting noticed by more famous people (Angelina Jolie handpicked her for OUAD, Kardashian wedding, TS copying a video, etc.). I think if she keeps moving forward with quality music and maintains her mainstream-but-not status, she'll be an icon with time. An icon of what? Its hard to tell.

You're right, but not always "teenager" is synonymous with "immature", at least on a musical level.

Personally, for me, she's an icon. I love the style of her music, I love the lyrical structure (even if some of it may repeat in other songs) and I think she's very... She's different than other artists out there right now. I love that about her. I love the way she sings and her voice and it's all attributes to reasons why I love Lana.

As for being an icon for the digital era or right now in the industry, no, she's not. Not yet, anyway. She has fans, sold out stadiums, but she needs radio airplay. She needs to be everywhere, singing at a Superbowl or at something that will get her face, name, and music out there. Last year (March 2013) when I discovered her, I had NO idea who she was. I didn't even realize she had a fanbase as big as it is. Now, with Lady Gaga, she became an icon because she was thrown onto the radio with the first single she released. Just Dance slayed everyone off of the radio and today, Do What U Want is played and Artpop tanked. Now, don't get me wrong, people loved Video Games and it got tons of comments and views and thumbs up on YouTube, but it just wasn't on the radio like it should've been to be popular. Maybe in 5-10 years, or shit, she could become popular now with a song from UV but it needs to get enough promo, enough radio airplay, it needs to be everywhere for her to become an icon. Yeah, people know her name NOW, but let's be honest, she's just not there at 'Icon' level yet. She has to make radio friendly, commercial music to be on the radio, which was why that godawful remix of Summertime Sadness was played everywhere.  I'm not saying EVERY SONG has to be this way, she just needs to have her music played somewhere so it reaches people who actually listen to the radio still (which, I don't but I know what's on it) so they'd wanna go buy her album. In my opinion, the Rick Nowels produced version of West Coast could've been what slayed the charts BUT it didn't release as a single or on the final version of the album...

    EDIT:
Continuing on that little rant, I guess, I went on about radio friendly, commercial music, it seems to me Lana wants creative freedom, which is what she went for when she fought her label to get UV published and out there. She wouldn't mind being played on the radio, but she isn't going to do what the radio wants to be there. She'll make what she wants to make and release, which is the problem when it comes to her being more popular than she already is or her becoming an icon. Then again, each album has sounded differently, going back to Sirens up till now, so we never know what she might decide to do next...

I definitely think, in the future, "Video Games" will be one of those songs that people know the name of, even though they haven't heard it.
Lana's personal stayin' power as an icon... I think it's too early to discuss that, honestly.
  23. Gecko liked a post in a topic by LiamViljoen in Discussion: Is Lana an ICON?
You guys saying "She's just starting it's too early to tell"

Jeff Buckley only ever released one album
He's considered the greatest folk singer that ever lived.

So far she has released albums that, in my opinion, will go on to receive classic status, but that wouldn't necessarily make her an icon. One thing that all icons hold in common is they all have a distinctive look and style and made a big impact to music (or whatever they specialised in) in their time that has lasted for decades. Lana has both of these things going for her (wether her impact shall last as long as other iconic musicians I cannot say) She also is controversial in the media for her views (or, ya' know, boredom) on topical issues. Yes, a lot of you may argue that her answers to questions regarding delicate issues have often been downright stupid, but overall in the way she acts and leads her life and how she portrays herself I think she's revolutionising feminism so that now many women don't feel like they have to live an entirely independent life to be considered smart, strong women and if they prefer a sexual dominance from their partner they won't be made to feel like "freaks" or "sluts"

People also call her a bad influence on young female listeners but really that's just sexually uptight idiots and male chauvinists that think singing about your weaker, less empowering experiences is inappropriate.

She's also polarising amongst critics and BTD was WIDELY hated amongst American critics although it received a strong critical reaction in Europe. If you ask me in years to come critics will realise they unfairly dismissed her and her music will receive the classic status it so thoroughly deserves.

Add onto all this the fact that she is gorgeous and much like other icons (Dylan, Monroe) she changed her name to fit better her style and imagery and yes, Lana does have strong potential as an icon, if any of what I just wrote makes sense that is...
  24. Gecko liked a post in a topic by Honeymooner in How Do You Relate To Lana ...
I honestly don't really relate to the words in her music.  I'm male and straight, so all the stuff about men and dependence is lost on me.  And, being happily married, even turning it around and having it be about women instead of men wouldn't affect me.  Not only that, but having never been into drugs or alcohol, I can't relate on that level, either.  (And I wish she didn't smoke!  LOL)  I do like the concepts in the song "American," though.

Where I DO relate is just in the fact that her music (both the lyrics and the instrumental) and her voice are simply beautiful.  I love listening to my group of 17 songs over and over.  The fact that I'm a classical musician has a lot to do with that, I'm sure.  Only one of the songs in my collection from Ultraviolence follows that pattern, though (Old Money).  Maybe I'm just a fan of chamber pop?   But I've never been affected so much with a desire to want to meet an artist in person and just talk with them, as I have with Lana.

This may sound crazy, but I think she and I are destined to be connected somehow.  Not in a relationship, just... connected as friends, or something.  There have been a lot of things that happened with her and with me at the same time, such as:

January 2012 -- I started a new job AND moved into a new house; "Born To Die" was released. August 18 -- My birthday, and the day that Ultraviolence (the single) was released in the U.S. in 2014. June 21 -- The wedding anniversary of my favorite actress, Marina Sirtis (OK, that one's not directly about me); Lana's birthday. June 2010, my dad passed away; June 2014, Ultraviolence (the album) was released. And I figure that since Lana lives in LA and I live in San Diego, there's at least a slight chance that I'll get the chance to meet her.  Of course, if she ever plays a concert in Southern California, I'm there!!
