  1. Stop it with the NIN, I'm dying!! This is one of the best love songs ever made, I don't even care what anyone says
  2. It’s more grungy I would say. I think that’s what she meant by « soft-grunge ». Nirvana influence is all over that song.
  3. I haven’t watched the video yet, but there are many many songs rumored to be about Courtney Love apart from « Hollaback Girl ». Some that comes to mind immediately: Babes in Toyland - Bruise Violet Tori Amos - Mr. Zebra (about Trent Reznor, too) Tori Amos - Professional Widow The Strokes - Meet Me in The Bathroom Primus - Coattails of a Dead Man I’m sure there are many more, I’m not even counting the Nirvana and Foo Fighters ones…
  4. Pure gold Also the opening of this one:
  5. Ultraviolence, my old friend, Listening to you again today after a while, sorry that I can’t do that too often, you’re sometimes too intense to be around. Your beauty lies in how you tell the ugly beautifully, how you manage to fashion something beautiful out of your pain. Your soul flows straight through my veins with the first notes and perks on the darkest point of my heart and forever ingrained there.
  6. It could be personal in the sense that she is also afflicted with media scrutiny. Fame is only truly understood by those who have it, so she can feel super close to them. She also once said she believed she had a special, personal connection with people long gone before her through their art. I'll update this post if I find the interview. Found it: “I knew then, really, that my closest friends would be people I have never really met before,” she said. “I was different and I didn’t know many people who felt about mortality how I did. As a result, I do feel a personal connection with the icons: John Wayne, Elvis. I loved how nice Marilyn was, I related to her. Finding girls who were as loving and warm as her is hard.” https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/elvis-presley-lana-del-rey-feels-friends-dead-celebrities.html/
  7. I’d like to imagine the reason for the silenced parts were purely out of respect for those artists who have been heavily targeted by media and general public which contributed to their early demise. So as not to open up another discussion like “LDR name-dropping Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston on her new album” or whatever. It’s like she’s saying they’ve had enough, they’re “free” now and must be beyond scrutiny. On top of that, you can put in those gaps any artist that you like who’s not with us anymore or even people dear to you who passed away and meditate upon what the song is trying to say as such. Edit: Sorry that this is not really answering your question or in response to you, I just wanted to express my opinion on the silenced part when you happened to mention it. ♥️
  8. I mean I know she’d never do that… But what a song, the mysterious, cinematic verses kill me. Such a shame it wasn’t released back when it deserved to.
  9. Thank you so much! God, I love Courtney. Also “What’s your attachment style? Mine is masturbation.” Lyric of the year
  10. What's Courtney Love's new material? I looked it up on Spotify and her Instagram but couldn't find anything.

    Father John Misty

I'm surprised I'd never come upon this speculation about Fleet Foxes' "Mykonos", since I've been a fan of the band since day one and also have been following FJM for quite a while. From the song's Wikipedia page: "The song is rumored to be about then-Fleet Foxes drummer Josh Tillman, now better known as Father John Misty, and his struggles with drug addiction." From the song's Genius page: "The first chorus is saying that after all the arguments, interventions, etc., the friend will now go to Mykonos – a metaphor for a rehab center, which are often located in quiet, secluded places." This performance with his divine back vocals towards the end surely hits a whole lot of different now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zS6i920KUMw
  13. Winner and champ pretty much mean the same thing, but still I think it makes more sense that she sings “winter”, for the coke is referred as “snow” earlier in the song so he’s snorting the “winter” in.
  14. I can’t be the person to answer your question once and for all since I’m not even a native speaker, but I, too, got caught up in it last night and after watching some live performances, I’m convinced she sings: “White lines, pretty daddy, gold skin, You snort it like a champ, let the winter winter in” I hear it like this consistently in different live performances, so I don’t think it’s a lyric change for the day edit: maybe this would help, too Another edit: I’m 100% sure now that’s what she says. It’s very clear here.
  15. To me, it sounds better than the original lyric which I find to be cringy.
  16. I’ve made myself believe it’s « ribbons AND knots », goodnight
  17. She clearly says “with my ribbons ON knots” here as opposed to other performances saying “in”. edit: So I think the album version also says with ribbons on knots. I don’t know if it’s correct grammatically but it’s Lana so edit: could it be « with ribbons OR knots » I’m losing sleep somebody help
  18. This. Not a native speaker, but there’s no way she says “in” on the album version. I hear “with ribbons our knots” which doesn’t make much sense I think
  19. One of her best looks. Effortlessly classy.
  20. I must say, it has been quite the journey. She is only a few years older than I am and I've been following her work since 2012. There were times when people questioned my interest in her, deeming her early work to be very "teenage-y" in subject matter or "superficial" and her image "carefully crafted". Women who liked Lana Del Rey were "trying-too-hard"s or "look-i'm-the-edgiest"s. Even though I understood why it might have come off as such, I've always thought the world she built was intelligent enough to play with appearances, stereotypes or reference its own authenticity or lack thereof, blurring the lines between real and the fake to the point you can't quite tell if she's being ironic or embracing it. In order to understand how brilliant she really was to pull that off, though, you had to be really invested in her world. On top of that, I thought her earlier image was just who she was at that moment. Maybe Lizzy Grant always wanted to be that girl, but didn't have the platform or resources to do so, it was always who she was deep down inside but couldn't manifest. Take "Brooklyn Baby", for example. Is she making fun of "edgy" hipster girls, or is she going all the way to embrace that stereotype? Is she saying, so what is so bad about it? Are the things young women think is cool is immediately dismissed as trying to seem "rebellious" and "different"? Isn't there something intrinsically human about all of it? Or is she being completely ironic? Is it both? There were times where I thought I completely lost interest, especially during the roll-out of Blue Banisters. I also didn't and still don't like NFR! that much. But I come to find myself growing with her, changing and evolving, facing my own traumas while she goes back to explore her own and eventually I've grown to like BB very much. The best kind of art for me is one that truly leaves its imprint on my life and I hadn't experienced that kind of thing after becoming a fan of Nirvana at the age of 14 until I encountered Lana. She is an exceptional artist and I'm more in love with her world than ever.
