The Weeknd and Lana Del Rey - "THE ABYSS" - OUT NOW!
barttttender replied to That Venice Bitch's topic in New Releases
Guuurrrlll, we were dry af. Can you just stop appreciate that we just got 2 minutes of lana serving vocals? Lmao. Some of you guys didn't like Tough because of Quvo or whatever, now this is middle-of-the-road... Just look at Katy Perry's last record, or even Gaga's Joker output. Lana is doing great stuff - and it's just collabs, not even her own music. We're being fed with content that no one is obligated to put out. Imagine being an Adele fan - one album every 5 years. We should celebrate The Abbys throughout Feb, and then an LDR single will drop (God willing) -
What is it with these DCMA comparisons? Nothing about The Abyss sounds anything like DCMA.

The Weeknd and Lana Del Rey - "THE ABYSS" - OUT NOW!

One of my favorites too. These are all pretty fucking great: Wake Me Up Cry for Me Sao Paulo Open Hearts (SOTY) Given Up on Me Timeless Take Me Back to LA The Abyss <3 Hurry Up Tomorrow (fun fact: David Lynch is listed as a writer, and I really wonder in what capacity and how and when this happened) Quite a few fillers on this record (I Can't Fucking Sing, Until We're Skin and Bones) and songs that are just fine or missing a bridge (Drive, Give Me Mercy), but I like the record overall. There's a lot to unpack. The song I'm not feeling at all is Red Terror (a pretty unpleasant listen for some reason despite contributions from Cirkut and Oneothrix Point Never). -
I listened to the record in full and thought Open Hearts was by far the best track on the record. Then I checked the credits and went "oh, that's why." The guy is a genius and rarely makes mistakes.

don't think it's AI, maybe just a bit of auto-tune or another filter? But the vocals are fire and one of her best this decade imo. Sometimes she struggles with the high notes (she's more of an alto naturally), but she kinda ate here. -
A Complete Unknown (2024) - Bob Dylan biopic

Ah, so glad there's more love for this brilliant film here - especially from actual Dylan fans (I'm very much a part-timer). I would LOVE a Dylan cover on TRPWS. I always thought It Ain't Me Babe was a Cash/Carter OG (blame Walk the Line for that). But it makes total sense that it his, and I sense it would fit on LDR10 just fine. Maybe with Father John Misty? Manifesting. Best film of the year imo. ♥️ -

Yes, mods, sorry for the digression. But I had a lot of thoughts about Lana during the movie. Lana should def do a straight-up Dylan cover. Also, if they ever make a movie about LDR, I want Mangold to direct it. -
Open hearts is the next single 1000000%. It's the only Max Martin produced track and a surefire Billboard #1 hit.

which they've fumbled when they said she was a feature on Dawn FM 🤦🏻♂️ They keep fucking up LDR info. Remember when they miscalculated High by the Beach chart performance? Super unprofessional. -
So, I just saw this movie last night, and was completely mind-blown. I was a fan of Walk the Line by the same director (James Mangold), but this is even stronger work in so many ways. The script is gorgeous as is the cinematography. The folks music scene, 1960s/70s Americana is conjured up so vividly (and on a very high budget) that it takes your breath away in every shot. Timothee Chalamet has never been better, and gave only not the best performance of the year, but of the whole decade (along with Blanchett in TAR). I had high expectations given his work in Call Me by Your Name and the Oscar nomination, but he did so much more than I thought he would. He WAS Bob Dylan, and they better give him that Academy Award. I haven't seen The Brutalist, but can't imagine Brody being better than Chalamet. Monica Barbaro gives a star-making performance as Joan Baez (she looks gorgeous, her voice is angelic and her acting is super subtle and finely-dosed). Great supporting turns by Edward Norton and Elle Fanning, who also gets some of the best lines. I gave it 5 stars on Letterboxd. Has anyone else seen this and what are your thoughts? For every Lana fan, this is a must-watch imo. Legit made me want her to do a full-on folk Bob Dylan-inspired record. If you haven't seen it, book your ticket, like, now. 🎟️

She sounds very prisoner-eaque to me. This is very much a Prisoner sister type of situation. God, can't believe we got a Quavo and The Weeknd collab back to back. Great way to start the year. I don't know why but I'm expecting Right Person to be very low-key and Bob Dylan-esque, so having these two collabs really kind of balances things out.- 308 replies

surely when Billboard is counting it, it'll be listed as a feature - all of the features? if i was a feature and I co-wrote the song but wasn't listed, I'd be fucking livid. -
Funniest comment I've read about the cover: He's having explosive diarrhoea on that cover. It's true that the previous version was cooler.
-
could be! There's some pitching going on.
-
Who's the girl vocal on Reflections laughing? Also, I claim the track Open Hearts as a favorite so far. Definitely single-worthy. EDIT: Of course it's the only Max Martin produced track lol. That guy will just outproduce everyone. The transition between Baptized in Fear into Open Tracks and then that entire 6-9 track run is pretty f-ing solid.
-
it's kinda of like the girl he's singing about in the other love songs finally makes an appearance towards the end of the record and it's rough. Lana is THAT girl

We won so bad! Also, can we just take a moment to appreciate the fact that the Weeknd included Lana on 3 (three) of his album tracks (more than any other artist?), while Lana only featured him once? He's an absolute legend and will forever have my heart. Not sure what the reviews will be like, but we can expect praise for the vocals, that's for sure. p.s. Dancing in the Flames isn't even on the record. Which is good because, like I said before, it didn't mesh well. Pretty proud of myself with my predictions on this record. -
Yes, god, please, her voice works so well with a more contemporary sound. One of her records needs to be produced by the Weeknd, Max Martin or Kevin Parker.
-
Okay, I've just listened to the song. Lana is serving vocals in the second half. We won just by having her there and something new to listen to. I can't believe I clocked this too (that it was going to be a ballad). The song itself is not as boppy as Prisoners or Lust for Life, though, it's very dark and brooding. Rank it higher than Stargirl Interlude though. LMAO, exactly

I called it yesterday - said it was gong to be a double album (big, farewell record). According to Wikipedia, LDR is not on any tracks as a writer. Which means she isn't as a singer either. personally i loved all three - maybe dancing in the flames the least because it sounds a bit like the weekend by books. (He's done that poppy 80s inspired MJ sound many times before. Timeless is perfect. Great workout track.) and the Anita one is a banger. that said, the three songs aren't very cohesive stylistically. At lest flames sticks out (the other two are similarly dark and brooding). if lana pops in, it will be for a ballad. Mark my words. Can't imagine he'll have 3 banger collabs on the same record. Maybe the closing track. i also wouldn't be surprised if it was a double record - given that he dropped three singles before it's even released. Plus, like I said, the songs are kind of different. It's also his last record under this monicker. i feel like the record might be bigger than the last two, more ambitious. Which is another reason why I expect Lana to show up on at least a verse.
-
highly unlikely scenario tho. This record is clearly guarded in the most secure vault
