I merged your thread into this one since it was a duplicate topic. I think you'll find this helpful:

It finally changed on Wikipedia now since the recent Rolling Stone article that said she's actually 29 even though she's usually reported to be a year younger. Methinks someone's been reading this forum.

I read a theory on here awhile ago that said she might have lied about her age when she was younger to get into bars and maybe that extra year on her fake ID just stuck with her all this time? Seemed pretty plausible to me.

Lana's age also bugged me for a moment. I did some "research" early on and couldn't find her date of birth. If she was born in june 86 that would mean that her and her sister would be a little more than a year apart. And from the photo "Back in the days" we see on Chuck's tumblr, those cuties seem to have more than a single year gap.

Now I'm so used to/over Lana mystery that it doesn't even matter. It makes me smirk, Lana thinks about everything, about every detail, she really isn't the kind of person who does something by accident. Everything she says and does have been weigh in, deeply thought out beforehand. She's became more of a control freak since VG. It's funny how her not wanting people to know about her past says so much about her personality.

The possibility that Lana might be a year older than what was known widely, for some reason bothers me. The discrepancy is so small that I don’t see any advantage for Lana to unnecessarily lie about it. However as I think about it more, I think I have come up with a possible explanation.

One of the most mysterious parts of Lana’s past to me has been the time she spent in Alabama. She has mentioned this consistently beginning with her early interviews and I think it is true. However nothing else in her background really makes sense to explain a sojourn to Alabama. Except that if viewed in a certain way, it probably does make a lot of sense.

I think when Lana got into high school in Lake Placid she met a guy who was bad news all around (the mysterious K). I think this is the guy who got her into alcohol and probably drugs later. However her drinking freaked out her parents who sent her to boarding school, mainly to get her away from this guy. However I am sure she kept meeting him, despite her parents opposition, e.g. when she came back home for vacations etc. After she finished school, I think her parents really wanted her to break off this relationship, but instead I think she ran away with this guy to Alabama. Instead of going to college she spent a year with this guy down in Alabama, where this guy kept getting into more and more trouble. This scenario would explain many of her lyrics (being on the run, Officer Brown checking on them, kids living the dark side of the American dream etc., there are many, many references in many songs that fit such a scenario), until this guy finally got caught and sent to prison. Not sure he got the death sentence (it’s too melodramatic, but a long prison sentence is as good as dying), and maybe he is still in prison. She said in an interview that he was still around and she was in touch with his mother, with would also be consistent with him being in prison. Anyway, once he got sent away she woke up and came back home, and finally joined Fordham.

However, this scenario means that there is a year missing in her life. So for her friends from high school, her years in Fordham would be a year off. I think she realized in early interviews that this was likely to raise more questions later, instead it was easier to just to pretend that she had come to Fordham straight from Lake Placid. She has always been very reticent to speak about her time before NY probably for this reason. This was probably evident in the Complex interview where the interviewer had picked up some discrepancies about her age. Like many things, once you lie about something, even something very small and inconsequential, it becomes difficult to backtrack later. Therefore, according to the scenario I have laid out, she graduated from high-school in 2003, spent about a year with K in Alabama, and joined Fordham in Fall 2004.

I also think that most of her songs are about K, although she does not name him (she hints at that in her My Space interview, where she says her songs are always about the same guy). I think she developed a crush on Jimmy Gnecco once she met him in NYC clubs, but if anything it was a short fling (even though she wrote a few songs about it). Jimmy however exposed her to being attracted to older men, but I don’t think she had any significant relationship until she met Mike Mizrahi (early 2009). Some of the songs that refer to old guys probably are written to him, and songs like Afraid, Damn You are definitely in reference to her breakup with him. However, I think she still obsesses about K, and that might make her a difficult person to have a long-term relationship with (although I hope I am wrong, and I really wish she finds a great guy to be with).

I spend way too much time thinking about such stuff, gotta stop!

This is a work in progress, but I wanted to start a topic that encompassed the much discussed debate over Lana's authenticity by weaving in a timeline of her life and career as well as old interviews of Lizzy Grant and David Kahne, her first producer, pictures, and performance videos. I plan on adding much more to this, but wrote a brief timeline to start from.

    ---

Elizabeth "Lizzy" Woolridge Grant was born on June 21, 1985 in New York City. Her father, Rob, was a copywriter at the very successful Grey Group, while her mother was an executive accountant at the same company. Her parents relocated to Lake Placid while she and her two siblings were quite young, and her father slowly transitioned into entrepreneurship via domain investment and independent marketing.  Lizzy began singing as a child as the cantor of her church choir while attending Catholic elementary school.

At the age of 14-15, Lizzy was sent to Kent Boarding School in Connecticut to deal with her alcohol dependence and remained there until age 18, when she took a gap year off and stayed with her aunt and uncle in Long Island, NY and worked as waitress. During this period, her uncle taught her the basics of playing guitar. The following year, she enrolled in Fordham University, located in the Bronx, to study metaphysics and volunteered rebuilding homes outside of school. She began playing open mics at various nightclubs in Brooklyn, performing acoustic versions of songs she had written and recorded independently, some of which would reappear on future releases. In 2006, at her performance at the Williamsburg Live Songwriting Competition (video of the performance and interview here:
), Lizzy was noticed by Van Wilson, a rep for 5 Points Records. In 2007, at the age of 22, Lizzy signed with 5 Points and began recording with producer David Kahne. (See interview with David about signing Lizzy here: http://www.mtvhive.com/2012/01/30/lana-del-rey-first-album-5-points-records-interview/). After receiving $10,000 from the contract, Lizzy moved into Manhattan Mobile Home Park in New Jersey, while retaining a residence with her sister in NY. Video from her interview with Index Magazine at the trailer park: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZI5iaCyL6ELizzy and David released the Kill Kill EP in 2008, but her first studio album was shelved, resulting in a shift of interest to charity work. "Homeless outreach, drug, and alcohol rehabilitation—that's been my life for the past five years," she told Vogue UK in 2012. She chooses the stage name "Lana Del Rey" for herself after a "series of managers and lawyers" suggest that she pick a new name to better represent the dark, cinematic music that she was making. (http://www.repeatfanzine.co.uk/interviews/LanaDelRey.htm)

Two years later, her debut studio album, Lana Del Ray, produced by Kahne, was digitally released. Her father assisted with the album's marketing. The album was withdrawn shortly thereafter and, three months after the album's release, Lana met her current managers, Ben Mawson and Ed Millet, who encouraged her to distance herself from 5 Points because her progress had stagnated. Shortly afterwards, Lana relocated to London to be closer to her management and lives with Mawson for a couple of years. During this time period, she appears on MTV singing "Chet Baker" with Mando Diao (
). Lana begins directing homemade music videos for demos of new songs and uploads them to the Internet. After her video for "Video Games" goes viral and attracts attention, she is signed to Polydor/Interscope/Stranger Records in 2011. Prior to her debut album's release, Lana secures spot on SNL but struggles due to stage fright, a recurring theme in performances and early interviews. Born to Die is released in January of 2012 to polarizing reviews, but becomes a commercial success and catapults Lana to the popular music stratosphere.

Hey guys I'm new here )... I'm extremely interested on lanas relationship with her mother. She never mentions her in her songs and never talks about her. I remember that on her facebook she posted a picture of her father when he was younger with a loving caption describing the pic ... Or on her instagram she posts frequently about her sibilings or father like I said previously... I'm starting to think she has something going with her mother...  and her past is very foggy and vague... I think on purpose. She doesn't want  people to know something. I'll wait for her autobiography diligently v.v

Psychologists don't draw conclusions about people without having talked to them for a significant period of time. Nobody here knows Lana, no matter what we may think after having heard so much of her music or seeing her interviews.

I do think it's inappropriate to speculate that her mom did anything to her of any sort without hard proof. It's entirely unfair to ruin Pat's reputation over a "feeling" - remember when people got carried away and started suggesting "Lana was in love with and wanted to run away with her English teacher~" over some song lyrics and like two interview quotes? Remember when people accused Jimmy Gnecco of domestic violence because of UV? As fans, we want to know everything, but I do think there's a difference between curiosity and making damning accusations that can have very real consequences. And if this sort of theory catches on, it's nigh-near impossible to correct it (some interview already mentioned the English teacher). Rumors spread, facts don't.

With response to her alcoholism... Lana said she started drinking because the concept seemed "so fucking cool." And then she realized she was using drink to deal anytime she had a problem, and that's when she couldn't stop. Lana also says stuff like "I haven't had a drink in 10 years" when we have Facebook posts of her being relieved that alcohol is going to be offered at a party. She's given her reasons for her teenage alcoholism, we shouldn't come up with new ones without evidence.

She definitely went to Fordham. Check the 76 page on Minor Questions; there's people who went to Fordham who know about her. There are Fordham publications that refer to her as a graduate. I emailed the alumni office and they confirmed she graduated in 2008 with a degree in philosophy. How she completed her degree is a question because she claims she did some independent study business, but I don't think it's fair at all to say her time at Fordham was "a lie" just because she doesn't talk about it much. Let's be real - university education is not valued by the music business, so why would interviewers care about that?

As for Lana's "shadiness" ... she has a right to her privacy, and she's said more than once that she'd rather talk about the music than what's happened in her life. She's very loose with numbers; she's notoriously unreliable with regards to accurately telling how long ago something else happened, which is probably part of the reason why we can't construct a perfectly fitting timeline for her. I don't think she's only "shady" about her early years; she generally doesn't seem to like talking about her life. Chuck mentioned, in her interview with Lana, how she [Lana] hates it when people mythologize her past, especially the trailer park. I'm confident that her living in a trailer park was about getting away from her parents, proving she can make it on her own, and finding her own identity as an artist. How many kids leaving the nest get excited about living in some stupid rinky-dink place just because, for once, it's theirs? Lady Gaga lived in such an apartment for a year or so before getting her record deal for similar reasons, and her parents also came from money, so I don't think a sinister past is her reason for living in a trailer park.

I'm going to end this post with two relevant Lana lyrics:
"Stop looking at my trainwreck life and start listening to the way that I sing the blues."
"And make up stories about my life and put on very cherry balm."

Since I listen to Lana, I've changed, I've decided to be who I want and not who the other people want me to. It's a complicate thing to explain (especially without knowing english ). However, she inspired me to live the life like I want and now I'm proud of me, of the person I am and of the person I want to become in future; thanks to Lana I believe in myself and in my ideas

I have read many times that female victims of sexual abuse tend to go into extremes: either panically running away from sex and intimacy, or becoming nymphomaniacs. Allegedly, the second is not that rare at all. And we all know that Lana likes to brag about her stunts. Ok, now I feel dirty mouthed.
But I think she just like to exaggerate everything in her manner of histrionic drama queen, as you said, because she knows that hot, spicy details, mysteries, teases, contradictions and controversies add to the grandiose image of a living legend.

There is certified theory in psychology that all addictions (so, also Lanas alcoholism, I suppose) stem from toxic relationships with parents, especially mother, who wasn't there in the earliest, more fragile and tender years of child's psychological developement, so that needy and helpless tiny child was not given enough love and care, wasn't nurtured and that kind of malnutritioning care, together with cold, controlling, possessive, but emotionally distant, unavailable and disapproving mother, creates enormous hole in child's being. That hole and perpetuating feeling of emptiness is later in life (unsuccessfully) filled with opiates and different substances that alter counsciousness and provide short-term escape from dark, painful reality (sucking elusive tit = sucking a bottle). That reality is conviction that you are not worthy of love (and you also desperately crave and yearn for that love, and alcohol warms your veins for a couple of hours, giving you false feeling of inner warmth - the real one can be provided only by love, of course). Also, addiction belongs to oral fixation, which is a part of oral character, formed in the first, earliest psychosexual stage of development. Others are: anal, phallic, latency and genital. Those who succesfully cross all traps of each phase and reach genital one, are the most developed and integrated, and oral types are the ones that have most wounds and complexes. I'm not saying Lana is a walking pathology, but I just find it interesting (yes, I'm nosy, but also interested in psychoanalysis) that she first tanked herself with liquor, and now is passionately engaged in chain smoking. That  is typical for oral constitution (I am exactly the same. I fought with alcoholism for about seven years, and I'm clean for about six, and I still miss my wild and escapistic life). As far as her mother is concerned, maybe she wasn't a witch, but if a father responds to daughter's attempts of seduction, she takes that as a signal that she possibly can replace mother and marry her beloved papa (Electra Complex, as someone said here). If daddy is especially fond of his little princess, she will develop strong attachment to him and view mother as a nasty rival. I think it is a normal phase in life, but it can lead to various tragedies if it is not overcome.

But, maybe I am all wrong about alcoholism and mother issues in her case.
