Probably made more people aware of terrorism, before then people never really knew or cared about it then it became much bigger the attacks and people paying attention about them. Also airport security and stuff all changed, National security spying on everything everyone does to catch stuff early.

 

This is making everyone more aware of viruses and just what can easily happen if something goes wrong in the future. This is actually a very mild thing and we've actually had time to plan here and people have still gone crazy. The next time something like this happens it could be a much deadlier virus, another type of illness or something from space hitting the earth, a super volcano or a solar flare or something then we will be completely fucked.

Obviously, social isolation isn’t sustainable but at least it’s possible to delay the inevitable to a certain extent. It will probably slow down the normal flu virus also, be interesting to see how much that goes down in future as everyone with that will also be keeping away from others and the spread of that will be way down.

 

I wonder how much the sales of guns have went up in the USA as well though, if this has shown us anything it's that things decline rapidly even when they are not that serious - this is serious but it's not life or death and there is no danger of things running out like food yet people have still panic bought like crazy and even resorted to stealing things from hospitals, pubs and restaurants. If something much more serious happens in future people will be killing each other probably within very first day of the disaster. The panic buyers among us would be shooting people in supermarkets within minutes or hours to get as much food as they can if a super volcano erupted and everyone kind of knew we werent going to see food again for a long time.

 

The idea of everyone staying calm, helping each other working as a community to look out and share things would never happen. It would be a zombie movie scenario of small groups fighting to the death over everything they need.

Maybe it's something to do with our reptilian brains taking over due to panic, or maybe it's not dissimilar to the fact that we have enough global resources but in the developed countries we consume more than is necessary, creating a deficit for the undeveloped countries and perpetuating the gap. I am definitely too much of an idealist and I get that socialism is a nice idea but doesn't really work historically (captilism can drive innovation, so it's not all bad either) but I think humans make things uneccesarily difficult for themselves sometimes.

Yeah we are not really cut out for it as a species. Ideally nobody should be able to own land, housing, companies, everything should be equal and free housing, healthcare, education, transport and whatever but it would never happen as most people are greedy and want more than everyone else, more money, more power, more possessions, they want to relax while others work for them.

 

Those same people in scenarios like this still want everything for themselves and will take, hoard and hide everything they need and more without thinking twice and if they get the chance will take even more no matter who is struggling or dying.

The attacks on the towers led to a surge in national pride and public expressions of patriotism and a strong commitment to help those that survived and the families of those who were killed. But there was also an significant increase of harassment incidents and hate crimes against South Asians, Middle Easterners and even those who looked like them. Several Indian Sikhs were attacked and killed because they were erroneously believed to be Muslims. Racism that still exist to this day.

 

Health effects -

The attacks were particularly disturbing to children, who saw the images of destruction replayed relentlessly on television. For years after the attack children suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. More than 2,500 contaminants, many of them dangerous carcinogens, were present in thousands of tons of toxic debris resulting from the collapse of the towers. It is estimated that over 18,000 people have become sick as a result of the toxic dust.

 

Economic Impact -

There was a wide range of economic losses after the attacks. It is estimated that the city suffered economic losses estimated in more than $90 billion. They were the consequence of lost productivity, wide-ranging insurance claims against the city, loss of real state and art objects, and impaired tourism and trade, among many other effects.

 

Security and Military actions (The Main Effect No.1) -

Security and protective services suffered significant changes due to the attacks. Congress passed Aviation and Transportation Security Act which affected air travel and security policies, as well as guidelines to be followed before getting on board. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have ravaged those countries, and resulted in a permanent state of instability and destruction.

Using the attacks as an excuse, the U.S. conducted wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that would have serious consequences on the U.S. economy and the world rule of law. Many people throughout the world believe that the U.S. squandered a wave of world goodwill resulting from the attacks. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have ravaged those countries, and resulted in a permanent state of instability and destruction. The war –never the choice of the Afghan people- has done great harm to there people for all sorts of different local, national, regional and international reasons. Widespread corruption, the massive arming of militias, the fuelling of war by neighbouring countries, the civilian losses and night raids and deterioration of security have all undermined their children’s education, there women’s ability to work, there ability to provide basic social services to the neediest part of the population.

My country is oficially in emergency state as well. Better sooner than later, I guess...

I'm not a worker and I was already doing everything that was recommended, so I guess everything will be the same for me. But I'm deeply concerned about all companies that will bankrupt, everybody that is loosing their jobs and won't get paid, and all families that will have trouble paying their bills and getting fed. Not to mention everyone who will have to keep working through this mess so all of us can have healthcare and our basic needs fullfilled.

When this is over, I wonder in what kind of world we will live in for a while.
