If middle age means you lose all the edge you have and you can only make piano ballads then I don't want it :brigitte:

Well, I'm thinking of the history of modern popular music, with artists like Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Paul McCartney, Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell, Eric Clapton, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Eminem, Will Smith, John Legend, and others who have written songs about their families, especially their children. These usually come--naturally--when they're over 30 and experiencing family life. In my experience, most such songs--like Sweet Carolina or Tori Amos's Ribbons Undone--are largely met with derision or apathy.

For a long time, on her Wikipedia entry, there was a quote from Lana in which she said, "I grew up in a Carly Simon household," so I've been saying here for years that such an influence, conscious or not, is going to eventually come out in Lana's music as she enters middle age--which she is (I understand that anyone can add or take away things from a Wikipedia entry).

I see the Carly Simon influence on 'Love,' 'White Mustang,' 'Love Song,' 'Let Me Love You Like A Woman,' 'White Dress,' 'Arcadia,' 'Beautiful,' 'Violets for Roses,' 'Blue Banisters,' 'Sweet Carolina,' Sweet,' 'The Grants,' 'Let the Light In,' 'Margaret,' 'Hollywood Bowl,' and even 'Suburban House,' which Lana didn't write, among others, some more, some less.

I'd also like to see Lana leave the piano alone for a while and give us something with more of a pulse, and not just one or two songs.

i guess you could call it textbook lack of taste

Yeah the casual reference to BLM was so distasteful, I think I understand what she means, but she definitely must have had a sudden rush of bravery to actually leave it in the album, considering the climate at the time of its release. And I completely understand those who criticised her for it, at the end of the day she put it into a romantic song about someone else. The lyrics are so diluted, like she’s comparing her boyf to her dad, then she’s talking about being at a BLM protest “screaming for them”… it makes no sense.

All that being said, I’m not gonna lie it sounds lovely. I love the dissonance between her vocals and the instrumentation, it’s definitely one of her most experimental songs. If the lyrics had been changed it could have been a great listening experience. It’s a shame, it has such potential as an opener.

We thought they were. Because when the (demo version) snippets leak in sept 2022 (before ocean blvd rollout began), an insider told us it was BB outtakes

dear textbook haters,

why?

I'm not quite a hater but she should not have used BLM for clout, especially since it added nothing to the song and felt not genuine.

I really don’t understand what she meant when she said this album was to lay it all out for the critics. Maybe it’s different because we had heard half the songs years ago but I don’t get what revelations we were supposed to get from this album? I might just read all 280 pages here to try and understand like I’m that desperate for an answer. Does anyone get what the big takeaway was? Like lol.

I think the revenge and the laying it all out for the critics ended up on the proverbial cutting room floor. She does let the critics have it--a little--on Arcadia and BBS, and shares some of the harder truths of her early life and youth on WFWF, but that's it.

We know for a fact that some months before the album's release, she removed 4 or 5 of the songs and replaced them with the badly-ripped already-leaked tracks.

So the angrier, more accusatory tracks were most likely those cut. We don't even know their names, like the "4 or 5 political songs" cut from LFL. I doubt any of the cut BB tracks made it onto OB.

Some day when she releases a career retrospective, some of the cut tracks from both LFL and BB will probably make an appearance, though whether they'll be identified as such, we'll only find out then, depending on what sort of liner notes are included.

Thank you! I think she referred to wanting to be there for “anyone who wanted to know the truth” or something similar after release (and the removal of the 4/5 songs- which I didn’t know!) so I guess in her mind Arcadia, BBS and Wildflower have enough for her in that sense, which in that case just release those three as stand alone singles versus an album. It’ll be interesting if those angry songs ever do come out.

And re the badly ripped tracks, I think if she was more particular for finer details like that she’d have a better chance at the grammy’s. NFR deserved it regardless but you just can’t put stuff like that on an official body of work.
