try to give the upcoming era a chance. admittedly her more recent albums have been on a much different level than her first 3 albums, but is the excessive amount of hate for the song really necessary? butterfly can be criticised in so many ways but it's a genuinely fun song and an improvement from a lot of the songs on love + fear. the lyricism isn't the best but it's the first single, i doubt it's going to be the best-written song on the entire album. the visuals, the sound, the production, and even the marketing are great. i'm not saying you can't dislike the song, but to dismiss an entire era because of the first single is an exaggeration in my opinion.

 

also seperate the art from the artist. even if you dont enjoy the song, or the writing, or the era just isn't clicking for you, attacking her personal life, experiences, and relationships which she's been vulnerable enough to share is just not a respectful thing to do. you can express your dislike to a song all you like, but refusing an entire album you haven't even heard and bullying her is just hate at that point. it's music, there's no need to take it so seriously. it'll naturally resonate differently with everyone

I was thinking about this the other day and Marina and Katy's career trajectories are very similar tbh.

TFJ/One Of The Boys: "Edgier" debut album, their best work (imo) with a lot of personality

Electra Heart/Teenage Dream: Fan favorite commercial pop album. Their most successful. Their peak.

FROOT/PRISM: Not as good as the last 2 but fans still love it. Both album titles are stylised in upper case too lol.

L+F/Witness: Original FLOP era. The moment many turned on them. Katy got rid of the black hair and Marina got rid of The Diamonds.

ADIAML/Smile: Second FLOP era but at least the album has 2 good songs that are discography highlights (Ancient Dreams + Venus Fly Trap / Never Really Over + Harleys in Hawaii)

 

Butterfly's her Woman's World so perhaps M6 will be her 143 (Terrible embarrassing corny album that absolutely misses the mark and will make fans lose the hope they still had that one day she'll get back on track again and the last 2 albums were just little missteps.)

yeah i’m really confused by people calling it one of her best… she looks stunning and the sets are pretty but that’s about it

 

she loves doing videos that are just her looking pretty doing stuff in rooms; but this one really isn’t special

at least froot was moody and a lil ominous.. and primadonna had such a heavy aesthetic behind it 

 

i think her best videos have gotta be radioactive/htbah/venus fly trap/oh no 

 

also fear and loathing is simplistic but beautifully done. ancient dreams is fun too

Exactly, I am not impressed by Butterfly MV at all but it's still the same thing like career-defining Primadonna, Froot.

 

Her creative peak when it comes to music videos was How to Be a Heartbreaker and putting a bunch of naked men in times of naked girls all over the media and TV stations saying it's too homoerotic to air. The power that that had

All of those are ballads, a different league. But better than Superstar, Orange Trees etc. indeed

 

My hot take has been that L+F ballads such as End of the Earth, Believe in Love are as good, if not better than, as ballads from her previous records.

It feels like she’s just releasing songs to get a few bucks these days.  Rather than having her full heart and mind in the art and music.
