To be honest, I don't think Marina needs to work with songwriters because she has released many self-written tracks (TFJ, FROOT and more)

 

It's not that Marina's lyrics can be "bad" because they're self-written. It's because Marina wants to write the songs the way they are. 

 

As once you said, there's nothing wrong with silly and playful songs, and I don't consider these lyrics to be bad because they're not serious. Marina has released unserious tracks previously and they're not hated. 

 

Edit: ADIAML was also self-written and there are some great lyrics on Flowers, VFT, Goodbye, PTP, etc

She did release many amazing self-written tracks, in the past. She's just not that good of a songwriter anymore (IMO). ADIAML's title track is well written but most of that album was very lyrically weak to me (especially Purge The Poison). I think working with songwriters would greatly benefit her.

my god this is... actually really enjoyable

 

the verses and the pre-chorus are what i wanted marina to dip back into tbh. lyrics aside, the production is actually interesting

 

the chorus has the really funky 'car alarm' (for lack of a better term) beat that i enjoyed, but wish it had a bit more lyrical substance

 

its kinda giving froot oats but she watered the oats down tew much

 

i havent really fully deciphered what she is saying yet so i cant comment on tbe lyrical content much

 

the bridge is fine, i guess. i think the beat realllly saves this from being a complete reject. thank u merna!

she worked with like 5 different songwriters for Love + Fear though and imo the best tracks were the solo written ones. (and also for example Marina revealed that the "messing up towels" lyric from No More Suckers was written by a co-writer  that kinda says everything). I think the best co-writers she has collaborated with are Rick Nowels, Greg Kurstin and Liam Howe.

and I think you have a point, because there are many benefits to having co-writers in your songs and Marina has released plenty of good songs written by more than two people 

 

But I'd just like to point out that Marina's artistry and lyricism haven't gotten weaker by X or Y, but her music is the way she is (whether you like it or not) because she wants it to be like that. It's just my belief. 

 

Oh, I can understand why PTP has mixed opinions with their lyrics, but to me, it has some great lyrics, especially the bridge, but that's just me ig

the thing is, she CAN still write good songs - a lot of the better songs on adiaml/l+f were self written, but there’s also a LOT of bad songs that were self written…. 

BUT the same can be said about her cowrites 

 

so i think the issue at hand that we should be discussing is not who is writing the songs…. but her taste level… (given a lot of her unreleased work post-froot is better than the tracks she picks for release, it’s clear she’s not the best judge of her own work) 😭 😭 and if she’s gonna work with a cowriter, work with a GOOD one!!! there are a lot of janky songwriters in the industry who just write the most generic shit they can rhyme.
