Unpopular Lana Opinions

Recommended Posts

Are the large venues @@Tycho is worried about more closely attached to the Grimes appearances? It would seem reasonable that Grimes would like bigger venues. I know LDR prefers smaller (and does better at them), but if she can ace the bigger venues it's ultimately better for her, although, if she gets bigger, I hope she keeps the habit of having interesting indie artists open for her (Don't know if that would be an unpopular opinion or not).

Lana is a visual artist, not just a musical one. Her homemade music videos show that she has (or had) a visual aesthetic goal in mind when making music. She's always said she's been really guided by visual aesthetics and "beautiful things," so that's important for her.

With that in mind, I don't understand why so many fans act like they're better and truer fans if they're "only here for the music." A lot of people like the visual work Lana created - and, may I point out, unlike most of her music, she made her homemade music videos by herself. If you're only here for Lana the Musician, that's great, but there's no need to act like Lana the Visual Artist is unimportant or simple "promo."

I don't know whether this is unpopular, but I don't like the tracklist on BTD - the order of it. I think the first half of the record has pretty awkward transitions, while the second half all blends together.

Also the video clips that she used for Endless tour is brilliant - especially the Off to the Races one  :flutter:

I actually think that her homemade video is so much better than any of the big budget video, a prime example would be Blue Jeans

I don't see the big deal about the rape video. Yes, I think it's clearly supposed to be sexually inticing and stylized (and no doubt reflective of rape fantasies on Lana's part) but that hardly makes it an endorsement of real life rape. Non-sexual violence is so frequently depicted as glamorous, sexy, and cool/badass (Lana has also made light hearted references to murder) and most people can acknowledge that it's intended as pure fantasy, but when it comes to rape people have a harder time being rational. This also extends to all of the BDSM references in Lana's work (''he hit me and it felt likes a kiss'', etc).

Because rape isn't something to glamorise? I know this comment was back in January but that shit is still messy, come on now.

UV was not good.

An upopular lana opinion would be if she would say "I'm happy and I'll never make sad songs anymore"

After I heard the album last week or so I thought the same.

Really the first half is good but than the air is out and you fall asleep

I didn't know this was an "unpopular" opinion until I read some of these, but I think her cover of The Other Woman is brilliant. I love the way she changed the melody from the original and her vocals are DYNAMITE. She really made it her own, and the lonely/jazzy/60s sound is on point. I don't think it was a great closer to UV, but still. I commend Lana.  :gclap:

Real life violence and real life murder aren't anything to glamorize either, but does that make gangster and action movies morally deplorable? Of course not, because the former destroys lives and the latter is pure adrenaline-fueled fantasy. The very essence of glamour itself is make believe; nothing placed under the cold light of day is ever glamorous, nor does glamour have anything to do with what is 'good' or should be considered acceptable. It is purely stylistic, the way Lana imagining herself as a murderess femme fatale in 'Kinda Outta Luck' is purely stylistic, and has nothing to do with her being a depraved, murder-endorsing sociopath.

Of course as I said earlier, I understand why our instincts cause us to be more disturbed by rape than by other forms of violence, but I still don't see that as a valid excuse for holding double standards.

A lot of people seem to believe that Lana is as famous/iconic as people like Sinatra and Bob Dylan and that she doesn't need to do promo because "she doesn't need hits and only writes for herself". I've seen lots of people say that they were happy Lana didn't do any TV appearances because she isn't a "commercial artist". Whilst it is important that Lana stays true to herself, good promo is so important in this day and age. I don't understand why some fans seemingly don't want her to gain wider recognition and greater success - which can only be done if you actually try to do promo. Sales, whether you like it or not, are important and Lana needs to do proper promo and proper music videos in order to maintain interest. Lots of people I know didn't even know she released Ultraviolence, and just remember her as that weird anti-feminist woman who sang like shit on SNL and had a remix. In order to stay relevant, she needs to promote her music. Promoting her music properly isn't "selling out" or being 'commercialised".

I think UV promo was lazy and simply not good enough. Many say that she only needs her fans, but if you release an album without live TV performances, do interviews where you make quasi-suicidal and controversial comments and seem distant and passive-aggressive, fail to promote the critically acclaimed lead single and release a few average music videos - you begin to lose fans.

Honeymoon is such an important album for Lana's career. If she fails to promote this album, she may begin to lose her relevance and appeal.

I think the video for 'Video Games' is awful and don't understand all the praise it has gotten. I like generally like Lana's homemade video aesthetic but the pacing of this one is totally out of sync with the song's tempo and the clips don't match the melancholic, gentle tone of the song. And that bumblebee top/dress is terrible (unless it's a reference to the bee stung lips?)

I think it is because it was her first viral video and it looked so... mysterious. Like, people wanted to know more and more about her to the point that they all created fake stuff about her.

And it was such an important moment in social media (Tumblr, Twitter etc) because it was so gif-worthy lol.

like on the voice? lol

Yeah! It would be great. It also would help her with the anxiety/shyness issue.
