evilentity 13,343 Posted September 24, 2012 There's been a lot of drama over comments in status updates about the line "I'm a fan of pro-ana nation." I think it's an interesting subject, and would like to discuss it here, if we can avoid the drama. While I agree with people critical of the line that it would be problematic if Lana were advocating anorexia, and I see the potential for anorexics to latch onto this, but I don't think that's what she's doing here. To the contrary. She's no more advocating anorexia than she is advocating drugs, drinking, getting beaten by someone with tats on his ass, or fucking your teachers. She's painting a picture of how fucked up she or other girls were in boarding school. The song is written from that perspective, but portrays that perspective as something fucked up. 9 Quote Stalking you has sorta become like my occupation. NEAL 740 Posted September 24, 2012 ^ ty for posting that, sir I wanted to say 'sarcasm', but it's not quite accurate a term, imo. It's like a long, long, long.. 1st person POV type of description. We utilize this from time to time in communication, I observed. There are people who are just really good at mimicking what other person do/say that when they tell a story, they re-enact what happened, telling the story in alternated voices, pitches and gestures. It may also derived from one's inability to quickly translates the event into a 3rd person's POV, imo. Sometimes it can be annoying, cos it may sound childish idk.. 0 Quote ..but believe me when I say that the surveillance we live under is the highest privilege compared to how we treat the rest of the world. IamThatGirlLily 533 Posted September 24, 2012 She's just a girl with a big imagination, her childhood was so plain and boring she likes to dramatize events to make them more exciting, more movie-like. She sure has had a troubled past but maybe she just likes excess, just like when she says she likes gold and diamonds. Her imagination makes everything bigger, harsher, more provocative. I never take her lyrics for what it says, 80% are from her experience, 20% are decorations. Maybe she had an anorexic period, maybe some of her classmates were, but nothing she says are that scandalous really. As Evil said, she's not advocating anything, just telling. Let's just hope american parents and 13 yo kids won't take it too seriously (sorry I know it's cliché). I don't want Lana to censure herself in order to sell or to please some stuck-up-minded people.
NEAL 740 Posted September 24, 2012 She's just a girl with a big imagination, her childhood was so plain and boring she likes to dramatize events to make them more exciting, more movie-like. Exactly. Has any of you seen the movie The Hole ? It feels like Lana ~aspires to be Keira Knightley's character, but in reality she's just the regular Thora Birch's character. And don't ask, idk why this film came up as analogy when there are millions of other example, her fave namedrop American Beauty for one. 0 Quote ..but believe me when I say that the surveillance we live under is the highest privilege compared to how we treat the rest of the world. Monicker 3,035 Posted September 24, 2012 Lyrically speaking, i've always thought of Lana Del Rey, first and foremost, as a storyteller. Not, say, in the sense of Tom Waits, whose lyrics read more like short stories, and one doesn't ever really wonder if he's singing about people, places, and situations from his own life. I think with Lana it's a lot more apparent that her subject matter is drawn from her life, but it's always puzzled me that so many people take every word completely as autobiographical truth. Almost as if that gives the lyrics more value somehow. I suspect she embellishes quite a bit, and i don't find anything "wrong" with that, nor does it make her and her songs less interesting or valid. I think that, as is the case with most everything, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. That said, when it comes to Lana Del Rey, i'm not terribly interested in the truth and details of her past and personal life. I'm just a music d00d at the end of the day. 5 Quote "The limits of my language mean the limits of my world." -Wittgenstein

Madrigal 2,616 Posted September 30, 2012 I'll ask the impolite question: Do you think Lana ever fucked a teacher? Well, based off the lyrics to 'Oooh Baby,' it definitely sounds like she was involved with an older man, and probably an intellectual. That's just the vibe I get off White's production...as a friend once told me, it sounds like a '70s porno.

TrailerParkDarling 5,691 Posted October 12, 2012 I'll ask the impolite question: Do you think Lana ever fucked a teacher? YES. I remember this weird interview where she's talking about her teacher introducing her to new music, and listening to things in his car, calling him her "friend".. def got that vibe lol.
